Protecting the TV Screen (OLED TV)

Precautions to Protect the Screen from Damage

Image retention

OLED TVs are susceptible to image retention (burn-in) due to the characteristics of the materials used. Image retention may occur if images are displayed in the same location on the screen repeatedly or over extended periods of time. This is not a malfunction of the TV. Avoid displaying images that may cause image retention.

The following are examples of images that may cause image retention:

  • Content with black bars either on the top and bottom and/or the left and right sides of the screen. (for example, Letterboxed, 4:3 screen, Standard definition)
  • Static images such as photos. Video games that might have static content in some part of the screen.
  • On-screen menus, programme guides, channel logos etc.
  • Static content from applications.
  • On-screen tickers, such as those used for news and headlines.

To reduce the risk of image retention:

  • Sony recommends that you turn off the TV normally by pressing the power button on the remote control or the TV.
  • Fill the screen by changing [Wide mode] to eliminate the black bars. Select [Wide mode] other than [Normal].
  • Turn off the OSD (On Screen Display) by pressing the (Info/Text reveal) button, and turn off the menus from connected equipment. For details, refer to the instruction manuals for the connected equipment.
  • Avoid displaying static images with bright colours (including white), clocks or logos on any portion of the screen.
  • Set the picture settings based on the ambient conditions. The Standard Picture is recommended for home use and when viewing content that often displays the station logos, etc.

The TV has following features to help reduce/prevent image retention.

Panel refresh

A panel refresh will adjust the panel uniformity. Panel refresh can be performed and should only be used when image retention is very noticeable.

Caution:

  • The Panel refresh function may affect the panel. Do not perform Panel refresh more than once a year as it may affect the usable life of the panel.
  • Panel refresh takes about one hour to complete.
  • A white line may be displayed on the screen during the Panel refresh, this is not a malfunction of the TV.
  • Panel refresh will only work when the room temperature is between 10°C and 40°C.

Pixel shift

Automatically moves the image on the screen to prevent image retention.

Other feature

The screen brightness is automatically reduced when displaying still images, clocks, bright colours or logos etc.

Using TV as Part of Audio System

Note

  • Before connecting cables, disconnect the mains lead of both TV and AV receiver. Refer to the instruction manual of the Audio system with S-CENTER OUT terminal for detail.

Troubleshooting

General troubleshooting for issues like: black screen, no sound, frozen picture, TV does not respond, or network is lost, do the following steps.

1. Restart your TV by pressing the power button on the remote control for about five seconds. The TV will restart. If the TV does not recover, try unplugging the mains lead, then press the power button on the TV and release it. Wait for two minutes, and plug in the mains lead. Visit Sony support website (information provided at the end of this manual).

When you plug in the TV, the TV may not be able to turn on for a while even if you press the power button on the remote control or the TV.

It takes time to initialize the system. Wait for about one minute, then operate it again.

The remote control does not function.

  • Replace the batteries. The parental lock password has been forgotten.
  • Enter 9999 for the PIN and enter the new PIN.

The screen becomes darker while watching TV.

  • If the whole image or part of the image remains still, the screen brightness will be gradually reduced to prevent image retention. This is not a malfunction of the TV.

You are concerned about image retention.

If the same image is displayed repeatedly or for long periods of time, image retention may occur. To reduce image retention, we recommend that you turn off the TV normally by pressing the power button on the remote control or the TV.

Note

  • Perform Panel refresh only when image retention is particularly noticeable. Avoid performing Panel refresh more than once a year because it may affect the usable life of the panel.
  • Images that include clocks, logos and bright colours (including white) easily cause image retention. Avoid displaying these types of images for long periods of time, otherwise image retention may occur.

A white line appears on the screen.

  • The Panel refresh has been performed. A white line may be displayed on the screen during the Panel refresh. This is not a malfunction of the TV. Panel refresh starts after the TV is turned off and takes about one hour to complete.

The message [Panel refresh did not finish...] is displayed.

When i) the TV is turned on, ii) the mains lead is unplugged, or iii) the room temperature falls outside of the range between 10°C and 40°C during the Panel refresh, the Panel refresh is not completed. Please avoid the above three conditions during the Panel refresh.

Protection of the TV screen (OLED TV)

Precautions for protecting the screen from damage

Image retention

OLED TVs are susceptible to image retention (burn-in) due to the characteristics of the materials used. Image retention may occur if a still image is displayed on the same area of the screen repeatedly or for an extended period of time. This is not a malfunction of the TV. Use images that are unlikely to cause image retention.

Examples of images that may cause image retention:

Content with static elements in the top or bottom part of the screen. (For example, in Letterboxed format, 4:3 screen, standard resolution) - Static images such as photos, which have static content in the corners of the screen. - The screen menu, program guides, channel logos, etc. - Static content from applications. - Screen brightness, such as settings used for news broadcasts.

To reduce the risk of image retention:

  • Sony recommends turning off the TV as usual by pressing the power button on the remote control or on the TV. Turn off the screen by using [Wide mode] to remove the black bars. For [Wide mode], select a setting other than [Normal]. - Turn off the menu (by pressing the HOME or DISPLAY button) and turn off the menu from the connected equipment. For details, refer to the operating instructions for the connected equipment. - Avoid displaying static images with bright colors (including white), time, or logos on part of the screen. Adjust the picture according to the viewing environment. The standard picture mode is recommended for home use when viewing content that often shows still images.

The TV has functions that help reduce or prevent image retention.

Panel refresh

Refreshes the panel to improve the image. You can perform a panel refresh, but only if image retention is noticeable.

Caution:

The panel refresh function may affect the panel. Do not refresh the panel more than once a year, as this may shorten the panel's lifespan. - The panel refresh takes about one hour. - During the panel refresh, a white line may appear on the screen; this is not a malfunction of the TV. - The panel refresh works only when the room temperature is between 10 °C and 40 °C.

Pixel shift

Automatically moves the image on the screen to prevent image retention.

Other functions

The screen brightness automatically adjusts when displaying still images, time, logos, or similar.

Image retention

OLED TVs are susceptible to image retention (burn-in) due to the characteristics of the panel used. Image retention may occur when images are displayed on the screen for a long time or repeatedly over a long period, and is not a malfunction of the TV. Avoid displaying still images for extended periods to prevent image retention.

The following are examples of images that may cause image retention:

Content with black bars at the top and bottom or left and right sides of the screen (e.g., letterbox, 4:3 aspect ratio, standard definition) - Still images such as photos. Video games that may have static content at some point on the screen. Menus on the screen, program guides, channel logos, etc. - Static content from apps. Broadcasts or channels that use logos and channel titles.

Troubleshooting

Common ways to check and fix the following problems: blank screen, no sound, frozen image, no response from the TV when pressing buttons, loss of network. If these problems occur, perform the following actions.

1. Unplug the TV, press the power button on the remote control and hold it for about 5 seconds. The TV will restart. If the TV does not return to the previous mode, try disconnecting the power cable, then press the power button on the TV and release it. Wait for two minutes, then reconnect the power cable. Or press and hold the power button on the TV for about 40 seconds until the TV turns off. 2. See the help menu by pressing the HELP button on the remote control. 3. Connect the TV to the Internet and perform a software update. Sony recommends updating the TV software in a timely manner. Thanks to software updates, the TV's performance characteristics improve, and new functions become available. 4. Visit the Sony support website (information provided at the end of this manual).

The remote control does not work.

  • Replace the batteries.

Forgot the code for the "Parental Lock" function.

Enter 9999 as the PIN code and enter a new PIN code.

The screen darkens during TV viewing.

  • If the entire image or part of it is static, the screen brightness gradually decreases to prevent the afterimage effect. This is not a TV malfunction.

You are concerned about the afterimage effect.

If a static image is repeated or displayed on the screen for a long time, an afterimage effect may occur. To reduce the afterimage effect, it is recommended to turn off the TV in the standard way by pressing the power button on the TV or the remote control.

Panel refresh

  • Perform the panel refresh only if the afterimage effect is strongly noticeable. Do not perform the panel refresh more than once a year, as this may affect the panel's lifespan.
  • Images containing clocks, logos, and bright colors (including white) can quickly lead to the appearance of the afterimage effect. Do not allow prolonged display of such images, otherwise the afterimage effect may occur.

A white stripe is displayed on the screen.

  • Panel refresh has been performed. When performing the panel refresh function, a white stripe may appear on the screen. This is not a TV malfunction. The panel refresh starts after the TV is turned off and takes approximately an hour.

A message is displayed [Software update not completed...].

If i) the TV is turned off, ii) the power cable is disconnected, or iii) the ambient temperature goes outside the range of 10°C - 40°C during the software update function, the update process will not be completed. Avoid these three conditions during the software update.

Measures to prevent screen damage

Effect of residual image

Due to the characteristics of the materials from which the OLED screen is made, a residual image effect may also occur in cases where the same image is displayed on the screen for a long time. This is not a sign of a TV malfunction. Reduce the image brightness, as the residual image effect may occur.

The following are examples of such images:

Images with black bars at the top and bottom, and/or on the left and right sides of the screen. (For example, when displaying widescreen format content on a standard 4:3 TV, the image is displayed with black bars. Video games, in which there may be static images in any part of the screen. - Screen menus, electronic program guides, channel logos. - Static contrast of program logos. Screen savers of the moving type, used in set-top boxes and PCs.

Residual image:

Sony recommends turning off the TV according to the instructions and the remote control. Stretch the image to fill the entire screen, using the [Wide mode] instead of [Normal]. Turn off the on-screen display (OSD) and all menus, and adjust the picture settings by pressing 1 (Normal/Text display). More detailed information is provided in the user manuals of the connected devices. Avoid displaying static images with bright colors (including white), as well as clocks and logos in any part of the screen. Set the image parameters according to the ambient lighting conditions. The Standard Picture mode is recommended for viewing static content, such as channel logos.

The TV has functions that help reduce or eliminate the residual image effect.

Panel Refresh function

The Panel Refresh function ensures uniform brightness of the panel. You can refresh the panel when there are noticeable residual image effects.

Precautions:

The Panel Refresh function cannot be used while the panel is in operation. Refresh the panel more than once a year, as this may negatively affect the panel's lifespan. - The Panel Refresh procedure takes about one hour. During the Panel Refresh procedure, the screen may display a gray bar. This is not a sign of a TV malfunction. The Panel Refresh function works only when the ambient temperature is between 10°C and 40°C.

Pixel Shift function

This function automatically moves the image on the screen slightly to reduce the residual image effect.

Other functions

Screen brightness automatically decreases when displaying static images, clocks, bright colors, or logos.

  • Troubleshooting

For general troubleshooting (e.g., no picture, no sound, frozen image, no response from the TV, or loss of network connection), perform the following steps.

1. Turn off the TV, press and hold the power button on the remote control for about five seconds. The TV will restart. If the TV does not respond, unplug the power cord, then press the power button on the TV and release it. Wait for two minutes, then plug the power cord back in or press the power button on the TV and hold it for 40 seconds until the TV turns off. 2. See the HELP menu (press the button on the remote control). 3. Connect the TV to the internet and update the software. Sony recommends updating the TV software regularly. These updates provide new features and allow the TV to perform better. 4. Contact Sony support (detailed information is in the manual or on the website).

If you insert the TV plug, the TV may not turn on immediately after connecting the plug. The standby indicator on the TV itself will light up.

The system initialization takes some time. Wait a minute, then press the button again.

The remote control does not work.

  • Replace the batteries.

You forgot to disable the "Parental Lock" function.

  • Enter 9999 for the PIN code and enter a new PIN code.
