USER MANUAL P8 PRO C Furman

P-8 PRO C GUIDE DE L’UTILISATEUR P-8 PRO C MANUAL DEL PROPIETARIOThe AC plug on your new 20 Amp Furman product is a NEMA 5-20P. The blades are oriented perpendicular to each other to disnguish the 20 Amp plug from the more familiar 15 Amp plug, the NEMA 5-15P which has two parallel blades. All products that are rated for 20 Amps must use the perpendicular blade plug to obtain a UL (Underwriters’ Laboratory) safety lisng. We recognize that using an unfamiliar plug may be an inconvenience to our customers, but this is a maer of public safety. So where do I plug in the NEMA 5-20P? Devices with a NEMA 5-20P plug will require a 20 Amp or higher rated circuit. Please noce NEMA 5-20R receptacles have one T-shaped contact that can accept either the horizontal parallel blade or the vercal perpendicular blade. According to the Naonal Electrical Code, if one wishes to ulize loads in excess of 15 Amps, the electrical wiring, circuit breakers, and receptacles must be rated at least 20 Amps. Locaons without 20 Amp receptacles should be inspected and upgraded to the proper NEMA specicaon by a licensed professional. The NEMA 5-20P (Plug) is designed to be used with a NEMA5-20R (Receptacle), prey simple – right? Is there any alternative? Yes! You may adapt the NEMA 5-20P to a 15 Amp outlet with the intenon to draw no more than 12 Amperes connuously. Furman has designed the ADP-1520B in compliance with UL specicaons just for this purpose. Please contact your Furman dealer to verify the ADP-1520B is right for your applicaon. In a business locaon, a local re inspector may not allow the use of adaptors deemed noncompliant. The safety listed ADP-1520B would be a worthy consideraon in such instances. The ADP-1520B is UL and CSA compliant. OK, suppose I use an improper adapter with a 15A outlet and then I draw 20 Amps anyway. What will happen? Probably nothing serious, since most commercial and many residenal circuits are at least 20 Amps. However, some residences do use 15 Amp circuits; if you aempt to draw more than 12 Amps, the circuit breaker on the ADP-1520B will “trip”. In order to avoid this inconvenience, check the electrical service panel, locate and conrm the size of the breaker installed, if the 12A breaker trips reduce the load to below 12 Amperes. Avoid repeated nuisance trips which can result in damaged equipment or in extreme cases re. Note nuisance trips can be an indicaon of electrical faults in equipment or the electrical system, yet usually it’s due to high current draws ALL CONTENT ©2013 FURMAN. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. • Three year limited warranty INTRODUCTION Thank you for purchasing a Furman P-8 PRO C Power Condioner and Congratulaons on your choice. The P-8 PRO C fea- tures Furman’s venerable Series Mul-Stage Protecon Plus (SMP+) circuit as well as our exclusive Linear Filtering Technol- ogy (LiFT). Together, these technologies comprise what is, without queson, the worlds most advanced and comprehensive transient voltage surge suppressor / condioner. SMP+ (SERIES MULTI-STAgE PROTECTION PLUS) Furman’s SMP+ surge suppression virtually eliminates service calls. Tradional surge suppression circuits “sacrice” them- selves when exposed to mulple transient voltage spikes, requiring the dismantling of your system, and repair of your surge suppressor. Not so with SMP+. With Furman’s SMP+, damaging transient voltages are safely absorbed, clamped, and dissipated. Unique to Furman’s SMP+ is its clamping voltage level. While other designs oer clamping voltages that are well above 330 Vpk, Furman’s SMP+ clamps at 188 Vpk, (133 VAC RMS). This level of protecon is only available with Furman’s SMP+ technology. Addionally, Furman’s trusted over-voltage circuitry protects against frequent and accidental connecons to 208 or 240 VAC, by shung o the incoming power unl the over voltage condion is corrected. LIFT (LINEAR FILTERINg TEChNOLOgy) Unfortunately, tradional AC lters/condioners have been designed for unrealisc laboratory condions. Prior technol- ogies, whether mulple pole lter or convenonal series mode, could actually harm audio and video performance more than they help, due to the resonant peaking of their anquated, non-linear designs. Under certain condions, these designs can actually add more than 10 dB of noise to the incoming AC line! Worse sll, lost digital data, the need to re-boot digital pre-sets, or destroyed digital converters are frequently caused by excessive voltage spikes and AC noise contaminang the equipment ground. Furman’s SMP+ with LiFT takes another approach, ensuring opmal performance through linear ltering and no leakage to ground. SAFETy INFORMATION To obtain best results from your Furman P-8 PRO C Power Condioner, please read this manual carefully before using. WARNING To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not expose this equipment to rain or moisture. Dangerous high voltages are present inside the enclosure. Do not remove the covers. Refer servicing to qualied personnel only.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

(Please read prior to installaon) 1. Please read and observe all safety and operang instrucons before installing your P-8 PRO C unit. Retain these instruc- ons for future reference. 2. Your P-8 PRO C unit should not be used near water – for example, near a bathtub, kitchen sink, laundry tub, in a wet base- ment, near a swimming pool, etc. ENgLISh FRANÇAIS ESPAÑOL

23. Do not place your P-8 PRO C unit near heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances that produce heat. 4. The P-8 PRO C should only be connected to a 120 VAC, 50/60Hz, 20 Amp grounded electrical outlet. Do not defeat the ground or change the polarizaon of the 20 Amp power plug. 5. Route the power cord and other cables so that they are not likely to be walked on, tripped over, or stressed. Pay parcular aen- on to the condion of the cords and cables at the plugs, and the point where they exit your P-8 PRO C unit. To prevent risk of re or injury, damaged cords and cables should be replaced immediately. 6. Clean your P-8 PRO C with a damp cloth only. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners. Never pour or spray liquid on or into the unit.

7. Your P-8 PRO C should be serviced by qualied service personnel when:

  • The power supply cord or the plug has been frayed, kinked, or cut.
  • Objects have fallen or liquid has spilled into the unit.
  • The unit has been exposed to rain or other moisture.
  • The unit does not appear to operate normally.
  • The “Protecon OK” indicator is not lit.
  • The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure has been damaged. 8. Your P-8 PRO C requires that a safety ground be present for proper operaon. Any aempt to operate the unit without a safety ground is considered improper operaon and could invalidate the warranty. 9. Do not aempt to service your P-8 PRO C beyond what is described in this manual. All other servicing should be referred to qual- ied service personnel. ADDITIONAL FEATURES Rear Rack Lights: The P-8 PRO C features a rear mounted BNC jack that accepts any standard (12V 0.5 Amp) goose-neck lamp for rear rack illumina- on. Simply slide the BNC plug over the socket and rotate clockwise unl the connector snaps into the locked posion. The rear rack lamp can be powered on or o with the rear light power switch located on the far le side of the front panel. Magnec Circuit Breaker: The P-8 PRO C has a magnec circuit breaker / power switch for the front and rear outlets. This 20 Amp magnec circuit breaker switch is fast-acng, but also specically designed to stand up to the enormous high inrush current demands of many Power Am- pliers. Addionally, the breaker is recessed to protect it from accidental power operaon. Extreme Voltage Shutdown (EVS) Indicator: This LED is normally o. It monitors a hazard common in the entertainment industry: wiring faults – for example, accidental con- necon to 220VAC where 120VAC is expected, or an open neutral from a 208 or 240VAC feed. The P-8 PRO C SMP+ circuit senses voltages that are so high that operaon would be impossible and shuts the power down before damage can occur. Upon inially applying power to these units, the Extreme Voltage indicator LED will light if the input voltage is above the extreme voltage cuto, and power will not be applied to the unit’s outlets. If the unit has been operang with an acceptable input voltage and suddenly that voltage exceeds 135V, the unit will shut o power to the outlets and the Extreme Voltage LED will light. Note: The EVS circuit latches on when triggered. If the main power is above the high voltage cuto and has caused the unit to remove power from its outlets, the unit will not restore power unl the operator manually turns the unit o, then on again. If the EVS protecon has triggered, please verify that the line voltage has returned to normal condions before turning the unit back on. PROTECTION OK Indicator: Although the Furman SMP circuit virtually assures protecon from transient voltage spikes and surges, nature has a way of oc- casionally creang electrical forces that are beyond the capabilies of any Surge Protecon Device to absorb without sustaining some degree of damage. In the rare instance where damage occurs, the green “PROTECTION OK” LED indicator located on your front panel will either dim or exnguish. If this happens some level of protecon from voltage surges will remain, but your P-8 PRO C’s clamping voltage rang will have been compromised. The unit must be returned to Furman Sound, or an authorized Furman Service center for repair.

P-8 PRO CTROUBLEShOOTINg gUIDE 1.) Symptom: No power to the AC outlets. Possible Cause: Circuit breaker switch has tripped to the o posion due to excessive load. Acon needed: Reduce the load by unplugging at least one piece of equipment from the unit, reset the breaker/ power switch to the on posion. 2.) Symptom: No power to the AC outlets, “Protecon OK” indicator is not lit. Possible Cause: Either the AC outlet to which your unit is connected has no AC voltage present, or the unit has been subjected to a sustained voltage in excess of 400 Volts. Acon needed: Plug the unit into an AC receptacle where AC voltage is present. If the problem persists, the protecon circuit may be damaged and require factory service. 3.) Symptom: Extreme Voltage indicator lit. Possible Cause: Input voltage is above 135-140 volts, causing power to the unit’s outlets to be shut down. Acon needed: Correct the line voltage and then turn the unit on. Consider installing a Furman voltage regulator if this is a common occurrence. DEFINITIONS: SPIKE: A spike is pulse of energy on the power line and can have voltages in excess of 6000 volts. Though they are usually of very short duraon, the energy they contain can be considerable and enough to damage sensive solid-state components in audio and computer equipment. Spikes can also foul switch contacts and degrade wiring insulaon. They are an unavoidable component of electric power. They are caused unpredictably by electric motors switching on or o (on the premises or outside), ulity company mainte- nance operaons, lightning strikes and other factors. Spikes (also called surges or transients) are absorbed by special components in the SMP (Series Mul-Stage Protecon) circuitry to provide safe voltage levels to protect your equipment. RFI/EMI INTERFERENCE: Noise from RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) or EMI (Electro Magnec Interference) involves lower volt- ages and less energy than is found in spikes, but it is connuous rather than transient in nature. It is not likely to cause damage, but it can certainly be annoying, producing stac in audio circuits, “snow” on video screens, or garbled data in computers. Noise can be introduced into AC lines by nearby radio transmiers, certain kinds of lighng, electric motors, and other sources. Because noise occurs at higher frequencies than the 50 or 60 Hz AC line, it can be eecvely reduced through use of low-pass ltering. ThREE yEAR LIMITED WARRANTy PLEASE SAVE YOUR SALES RECEIPT!
