Frequently Asked Questions - RM03 VdS ABUS

How to install the RM03 VdS smoke detector?
Secure the base to the ceiling by drilling holes and using the provided wall plugs. Insert the 9V battery, then attach the detector to the base by turning clockwise. The detector cannot be mounted without a battery.
How to test the detector?
Press the test button on the front for 5 to 10 seconds. The alarm should sound. Perform this test once a month. You can also use a compatible test aerosol.
When to change the battery?
Change the battery as soon as the detector beeps once per minute. This signal lasts about 30 days. Use a high-quality 9V alkaline battery. The battery normally lasts at least 12 months.
What to do in case of alarm?
Leave the premises immediately. Do not waste time getting dressed or taking belongings. Follow your evacuation plan. Do not open a hot door. Call the fire department from outside.
Where to install the detector?
Install the detector on the ceiling, in the center of the room. Keep it at least 15 cm from walls and 50 cm from corners. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms, and garages to prevent false alarms. Install a detector in every bedroom and hallway.
How to clean the detector?
Vacuum or blow dust off the ventilation grilles. If necessary, use a soft brush. Clean the surface with a slightly damp cloth (soapy water). Do not use chemical or abrasive products.
What is the lifespan of the detector?
Replace the detector at most every 7 years to ensure proper operation. After this period, the sensors may become less sensitive.
What to do if the detector sounds without reason?
Check for smoke, steam, or dust. Clean the detector. If the problem persists, replace the battery. If it continues, the detector may be faulty and must be replaced.
Is the detector compatible with other devices?
This detector operates independently. It is not designed to be interconnected with other detectors or systems. For extended protection, install multiple individual detectors.
What is the warranty of the detector?
ABUS offers a 5-year warranty from the date of purchase for defects in materials or workmanship. Included batteries are excluded. Keep the proof of purchase. For claims, contact your dealer within the first 2 years.

Dear Customers,

Congratulations. You have chosen well.

With this smoke detector, specially designed for the private residence, you have ensured an important contribution to your personal safety.

Please carefully read through these instructions for use before starting up!

Smoke detectors help save lives!

Smoke detectors are indispensable for early fire detection.

As soon as smoke enters the smoke detector a warning signal sounds, loudly enough to awaken even those who are sleeping.

This smoke detector is VdS approved and guarantees the highest quality and manufacturing standards!

Functionality and Characteristics

The smoke detector operates according to the optical principle and has a measurement chamber in which penetrating smoke particles are measured.

If the alarm threshold is exceeded, a clamorous alarm sounds.

The alarm is turned off as soon as the measurement chamber is smoke-free.

• Monitoring area: 40 m ^2 within one room
- Battery operated (1x9V battery)
• Automatic recognition of battery level
- Battery case monitor
(smoke detector can only be installed with battery inserted)
- Simple cover assembly
• Optical (LED) and acoustic alarm

What to do in case an alarm sound is triggered

  • Immediately leave the residence!
Every second counts; do not lose any time to getting dressed or carrying objects. Use an escape route!
  • Do not open any doors without first inspecting the surface.
If it is hot or smoke can be seen underneath the door, do not open the door! Use an alternative escape route. If the surface is cool, press a shoulder against it, open it slightly and be prepared to close the door if heat and smoke enter.
  • If the air is smoky, stay close to the floor and breath through a damp cloth if possible.
  • Once out of the building, go to the agreed upon meeting point and do not return to the house.
  • Call the fire department outside the burning building.

Installation locations

  • Place the smoke detector directly on the ceiling in the center of the room.
  • Preferred rooms are living rooms, bedrooms and children's rooms.
If there are multiple bedrooms, install additional smoke detectors in each bedroom.
  • Smoke detectors should also be installed in hallways in order to monitor them, as fires can easily be ignited in stairways in particular (chimney effect).
Several detectors may be necessary in long hallways.
The distance between the detectors should not be greater than 8 m.
  • When installing on the ceiling, ensure that the detector is at least 15 cm from the side wall and at least 50 cm from each corner.

Avoid these locations for installation!

  • Spots where there are greater temperature fluctuations than the operating temperature range (+4°C to +45°C).
  • Locations where draft air can keep smoke away from the detector, such as next to windows, doors or ventilation shafts.
  • Spots where moisture, increased air humidity or exhaust emissions can trigger false alarms, such as in kitchens, bathrooms or garages.
  • Locations that can negatively influence the functionality of the detector due to high dust and contamination loads.
  • At the highest point of "A"-shaped ceilings. The distance to the peak of the ceiling should be at least 30 cm.

Installation and Attachment

  • Loosen smoke detector from the detector base (by turning counter-clockwise) and mark the drill holes through the base.
    • Install the necessary drill holes and wall anchors and screw down detector base.
  • Insert battery and fasten smoke detector on detector base (by turning clockwise). The detector is equipped with a safety device that prevents attachment of the detector without a battery.
  • If the smoke detector cannot be fastened on the base, ensure that the battery is properly connected.

Start-Up and Function Test

  • The smoke detector is operationally ready as soon as the battery is inserted. A red display light is located under the test button, which blinks once per minute and shows that the battery is correctly installed and creating enough current to trigger the alarm.
  • Each smoke detector should be tested once per month by pressing the test button, located on the front of the detector, for 5 –10 seconds. Alternatively, the Test Spray RM (in the ABUS product line) can be used on the smoke detector for testing. The siren sounds and the functionality of the smoke detector is tested.

Replacing the battery

  • The 9V DC battery will last approximately one year under normal conditions.
  • If the battery should be weak, the smoke detector will emit a beeping sound once per minute (for approx. 30 days) as a reminder to replace the battery. The battery must be replaced if this signal sounds. The smoke detector remains fully functional during this period.
  • The smoke detector should be tested after every battery replacement. Press the test button and hold for 5 –10 seconds until the alarm sounds. If the signal sounds, the device is working properly and can be fastened.

We recommend using the following high-quality alkaline batteries: Duracell # MN 1604, Energizer Ultra+, Energizer Industrial or Varta Longlife. Used batteries do not belong in household garbage – please dispose of them environmentally correctly!

Alarm and Error Signal

- If the alarm threshold is exceeded, a clamorous alarm sounds. The alarm remains activated for as long as smoke is found in the detection chamber. The alarm is not turned off until the measurement chamber is smoke-free.

Maintenance

• Dusty detectors must be cleaned.
Dust deposits in the air slots of the detector can be vacuumed or blown out. If necessary, the dust can be removed with a brush.
- The surface can be cleaned with a towel, lightly dampened with soap suds.
- Do not use chemicals or abrasives.

Please note:

Smoke detectors help save lives. Consequently, out of concern for your own safety, regularly change the battery and test the functionality of the detector. Remember that the smoke detector cannot prevent a fire, but rather can only signal in case of a fire.

Out of concern for your own safety, please replace the smoke detector every 7 years at latest!
