Introduction

The wireless smoke detector reacts to smoke particles that penetrate its measurement chamber. It also reacts to temperatures above 65 °C.

In the event of fire, the detector emits an alarm through the wireless alarm centre and also on the detector itself.

Warning:

Smoke detectors are intended to help occupants of a building leave areas affected by fire by warning them of smoke and fires in good time. Smoke detectors do not prevent fires, and do not fight fires independently.

Pay attention to all valid fire precaution regulations and recommendations, especially the following guidelines on the standard use of smoke detectors:

DIN EN 14676 – Smoke alarm devices for use in residential buildings, apartments and rooms with similar purposes – Installation, use and maintenance.

For your own safety, please replace smoke detectors every ten years (at the latest)!

Battery warning!

The device is supplied with direct current from a battery. To guarantee a long working life and avoid fire and injury, please note the following:

• Do not dispose of the battery in domestic waste.
• The battery must not be directly exposed to heat or sunlight, and must not be stored in a place with a very high temperature.
• The battery must not be burned.
• The battery must not come into contact with water.
• The battery must not be dismantled, pierced or otherwise damaged.
• The battery contacts must not be short-circuited.
• The battery must be kept away from small children.
• The battery cannot be recharged.

Functional principle and features

The detector works optically in order to detect smoke. A light transmitter and light receiver are both installed in the measurement chamber. Both are separated by an intermediate wall. No optical connection is made between the transmitter and receiver when no smoke is present in the chamber. Penetrating smoke disperses the light so that it hits the receiver. This triggers the detector.

The detector is also equipped with a temperature gauge. The detector also triggers when the temperature exceeds 65 °C .

Position

The human sense of smell is not active whilst sleeping, meaning that bedrooms, nurseries and entrance halls should be monitored in particular. However, at least one smoke detector should be fitted outside the bedroom.

Due to the especially high risk of fires, entrance halls and corridors with regular fire loads must be monitored using smoke detectors. In multi-storey houses, at least one smoke detector should be fitted on each floor. In buildings with open connections to several floors, at least one smoke detector should be fitted on the top floor.

Always check whether the smoke detector and other alarm systems can be heard clearly from the bedrooms.

Place the smoke detector directly on the ceiling in the centre of the room.

Smoke detectors should not be more than 8 metres apart.

When fitting on the ceiling, make sure that the smoke detector is at least 15 cm from the side walls and 50 cm from the corners.

When fixed to a wall, the smoke detector must be at least 15 cm from the ceiling. In attics with roof ridges, the detector must be mounted 90 cm from the centre of the wall.

To guarantee problem-free operation, the detector must NOT be painted and must NOT be fixed in the following locations:

1. Places where expected temperature variations are greater than the ambient operating temperature (0 °C to +40 °C).
2. Places where draughts can keep smoke away from the detector, such as near windows, doors or ventilation shafts.
3. Places with steam, high air humidity or exhaust gases, e.g. kitchens, bathrooms or garages.
4. Places where thick dust or smoke could impair the function of the smoke detector.
5. At the highest point of a gable roof. The distance to the rooftop should be at least 30 cm.

6. Above a heater or near the floor.

7. Next to or on large metal structures. Less than one metre away from power lines and metal, water and gas pipes. Less than two metres away from fluorescent lamps. Inside steel cases. Next to electrical devices, especially computers, photocopiers or communication devices. Note: Wireless conditions and malfunctions can change over time, meaning no guarantees can be given for a specific transmission range.

Installation

Unscrew the detector from the base by turning it in an anti-clockwise direction.

Use the base as a template to mark the drill holes. Drill them and fix the base using the wall plugs and screws.

Connect the battery correctly and insert it into the detector. The activity LED flashes and the detector emits a loud tone for one second. This tone indicates that the detector is working properly.

Note: If the detector beeps once per second, then an error has occurred or the battery is empty. Replace the battery and check whether the detector emits a one second tone.

Fix the detector to the base. The detector has a safety device that prevents installation onto the base without an inserted battery.

Training

Set the Secvest alarm system or the Terxon extension to learning mode. See the relevant receiver instructions for more details.

Wireless variation:

Keep the test button pressed for 6 seconds until the detector sends a signal to the wireless alarm system (as detailed under “Test”).

IR variation:

An LED is found on the bottom of the smoke detector opposite the battery compartment. To train the smoke detector to the wireless extension, hold the LED above the IR receiver. Ensure that the learn LED on the detector is no further than 25 mm away from the learn sensor. Keep the test button pressed for 6 seconds until the detector sends a signal (as detailed under “Test”).

Make sure that the smoke detector is recognised by your wireless alarm system / wireless extension.

Reducing sensitivity on the detector

To reduce the sensitivity of the smoke detector for a short period, press the test button briefly. If the detector is not already in the alarm state, then two short beeps are heard. The detector is now set to reduced sensitivity. The detector automatically changes back to normal sensitivity after 10 minutes.

To set the detector back to normal sensitivity manually, press the test button briefly again. Three short beeps are heard. The detector is now set back to normal sensitivity.

Switching off the alarm

To disable the piezo signaller on the smoke detector, press the test button once briefly. The detector remains silent. The detector changes back to normal mode when heat or smoke are no longer detected.

Test

Test the smoke detector at least once a week. It can be tested in two ways.

- Switch the alarm centre to learning mode and carry out a walk test. Press and hold the test button (LED) for 6 seconds. After approx. 4 seconds, short beeps are heard. The piezo signaller sounds after 6 seconds. The detector now sends a signal to the alarm centre. The LED on the test button lights up continuously until 10 seconds after the button is released.

- Hide the detector in the user menu so that no alarms are triggered by the alarm centre. Test the detector as detailed above. In this variation, there is no way of testing whether the alarm signal is received by the alarm centre. After the test, display the detector once again.

Replacing the battery

The service life of the 9V battery is about one year. About 30 days before the battery is completely empty, the smoke detector emits a short signal tone once per minute. This signal indicates that the battery must be replaced. The detector works as normal during this time.

The detector also send a signal to the alarm centre that the battery is empty. Unscrew the detector from the base and remove the battery. Wait a moment before connecting the new battery, or short-circuit the detector connections for 3 seconds.

Connect the new battery correctly. Insert the battery into the compartment.

After replacing the battery, test the detector and reinstall it.

A red control LED is found under the test button, which flashes once per minute. This indicates that the battery is connected correctly.

Maintenance

If the detector beeps five times in series, then an error has occurred or the battery is empty. Replace the battery, then check whether the activity LED functions normally.

If the detector beeps five times in series after a new battery is inserted, then the device is defective. Return the device to your supplier.

Cleaning

Remove dust from the detector with a dry or damp cloth (use soapy water only). Use a vacuum cleaner to carefully clean the air vents. Do not use chemicals or abrasive materials!
