The speakers use a pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter that extends the bandwidth at 40kHz . Because of the Beryllium potential dangerousness, the material that constitutes the tweeter, some safety instructions described below must be followed by the user of the loudspeakers in order to avoid any risk of this material absorption. However, the risks are extremely limited in its solid form, as the product dangerousness is linked to the inhalation, absorption or contact of vapours or micro-particles.

1. Safety instructions

The Beryllium dome must never be in contact with abrasive material.

You must avoid any contact with the skin or the eyes, any inhalation or ingestion of the whole or a part of the Beryllium dome. The manufacturer underlines that the Beryllium absorption by respiratory, digestive tracts or skin can lead to serious physical troubles, because of its high toxicity for man. We then recommend to the speakers users to carefully keep the tweeter protection grille in place. If the protection grille is removed, the user will have to carefully replace this grille after use.

Generally speaking, children must be kept away from speakers and especially from the Beryllium dome.

2. In case of dome damaging

If the Beryllium dome is damaged in any possible way, you must cover it as soon as possible on all its surface with the supplied protection adhesive tape. We recommend that you contact the retailer so that a competent department will take off and replace the tweeter.

If the dome is broken, the possible Beryllium particles must be carefully collected with the supplied protection adhesive tape and then be placed in a hermetically sealed plastic bag. It will be sent with the speakers to the retailer.

In case of absorption by skin, eye projection or in case of inhalation or ingestion of Beryllium, see a doctor.

3. End of life for speakers - Information

At the end of the speakers life, you must not throw this product in the environment, but you must take it to an adapted recycling center.

Running-in period

Utopia Be speakers incorporate the very latest components. To ensure such complex mechanical elements work in harmony with the rest of your system, they must be allowed to function correctly in this environment. Such changes in temperature and humidity are regarded as very hostile. For Utopia Be subwoofoers to benefit, a running-in period must be used to ensure they are prepared for this. We recommend that once the system is ready for listening the subwoofoers should be run-in at medium volume setting. The use of audio material that contains good low frequencies is ideal to gain their full potential. We recommend this running period be used for at least one week. After which the excellent performance of your Utopia Be speakers can be fully appreciated.

Top of the Elite range, Ultima is a full active two-way hi-fi system composed of two 61/2" (16.5cm) woofers and two 8" (20cm) subwoofoers.

Installing the tweeters

Choosing the right location

Ultima tweeters have been designed for surface-mounting or flush-mounting (recommended). Choosing the best location, mounting method and orientation of the tweeters is extremely important as this will considerably influence the rendering of the treble, the stability of the stereo image and the staging. Ideally, you should find the best position so that the left and right tweeters are approximately the same distance away from the listener, oriented towards the ears of the listener and without any obstacles between the two. You will need to compare the results in various positions before deciding on the final position. The tweeters must be situated in front of the listening position, preferably on either extremity of the dashboard (fig. 1, A), or even better, on the A pillar (fig. 1, B).

Flush mount (recommended)

For the best results (for a more linear response and better control of the directivity), a flush mount is recommended for the tweeters. Route the tweeter wires through the mount, and screw the tweeter into place using the three screws provided. Check there's enough depth for the tweeter mount before screwing into place.

When manipulating and installing the Ultima tweeters, keep the grilles on to prevent damage in case your tools are attracted towards the dome due to force of the magnet.

Installing the woofers

Choosing the right location

Mounting the woofers to the upper door will provide the best results in the midrange frequencies (fig. 1, A). Mounting the woofers to the lower door (fig. 1, C), will provide the best bass but you may lose some midrange. Mounting the woofers to the middle of the door is an interesting compromise for obtaining good tonal balance (fig. 1, B).

Mounting advice

An optimum installation is required due to the considerable amounts of energy released by these speaker drivers. We recommend flush-mounting the speaker drivers to a sturdy MDF support, possibly reinforced using resin, then screwing them directly onto a metallic part of the vehicle to avoid any unwanted vibrations. The seal with the support must be perfect to avoid any air leaks from the front or rear of the woofer as this may considerably reduce performance.

For the best results, we advise applying an insulating material such as "BAM" (fig. 2, D) directly onto the inside of the door frame, just behind the speaker driver in order to absorb any vibrations. Also ensure that the woofer magnets do not interfere with any of the vehicle's mechanical parts. If you're using grilles (not supplied), check that the space between the speaker driver and the grille is big enough so that the cone can't come into contact with the grille.

Installing the subwooers

Choosing the right location

Ultima subwoofoers have been designed for very compact enclosures to facilitate integration. Bringing the bass towards the front of the vehicle with the other speaker drivers improves timbre and staging. This also enables the critical frequency range of between 20Hz and 100Hz to be allocated to speaker drivers set up to provide the best results in terms of performance, neutrality and dynamics in this frequency range.

Mounting advice

The enclosure is dissociable from the subwoofer: it is what determines how the speaker driver sounds and performs. Each subwoofer has specific characteristics which require a particular type of loading (closed or bass-reflex for example) and an optimum internal volume. This principle must be respected to take advantage of the extremely high performances the Ultima subwooers are capable of.

Bass-reflex loading

The bass-reflex enclosure is ideal for Ultima's 8W subwoofer under certain conditions. It significantly increases energy, providing very dynamic bass, and it is characterised by very high efficiency of the bass and sub-bass. It is proscribed to alter the enclosure volume or the dimensions of the vent: bass-reflex enclosure volume: 22.5L (0.79 cu.ft) per subwoofer with a vent measuring 23/8'' (7cm) wide and 611/16" (16cm) long (refer to frequency response curve and impedance curve page 14).
