Frequently Asked Questions - HVBF 5172BHK HOOVER

Does the HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK defrost automatically?
Yes, this model is equipped with a Total No Frost system (Frost Free), which automatically eliminates frost in both the refrigerator and the freezer. You never need to manually defrost.
What is the annual electricity consumption of this fridge-freezer?
The HVBF 5172BHK is rated A+ with a consumption of 0.67 kWh/24h, or about 245 kWh per year. It uses R600a refrigerant, free of CFCs and HFCs.
How long will frozen food stay preserved in the event of a power outage?
In case of a power outage, the preservation duration for frozen food is approximately 10 hours (temperature rise time). Do not open the freezer during this period to keep it cold as long as possible.
The refrigerator is no longer cooling - what should be checked first?
First, check that the plug is properly connected and that the circuit breaker has not tripped. Make sure that the rear and side vents are not blocked (leave at least 5 cm of space). Also check that the door closes properly and that the seal is not damaged.
How do you reverse the door opening direction?
The door of the HVBF 5172BHK is reversible: the opening direction can be changed from left to right (or vice versa). This operation requires moving the hinges and handles - refer to the dedicated section of the user manual for detailed steps.
What is the noise level of this appliance?
The HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK emits a noise level of 43 dB(A). Normal operating noises include gurgling (refrigerant circulation), creaking during temperature variations, and the discreet sound of the No Frost fan.
Under what ambient conditions can this appliance operate?
This fridge-freezer is climate class ST (subtropical), meaning it operates correctly in an ambient temperature between 10°C and 38°C. Avoid installing it in an unheated garage in winter if temperatures drop below 10°C.
How do you adjust the freezer temperature?
The freezer is rated 4 stars (****), which corresponds to a temperature of -18°C or lower. Use the electronic thermostat on the control panel to adjust the setting according to your needs. The intermediate position is suitable for most daily uses.
The light or LED indicator is no longer working - is it serious?
The interior LED light cannot be replaced by the user. If the indicator goes out, first check that the door properly activates the ignition contact (small push button on the frame). If the problem persists, contact Hoover customer service.
How do you clean the inside of the refrigerator?
Unplug the appliance before any cleaning. Use warm water with a little baking soda or mild detergent. Do not use abrasive products, solvents, or steam that could damage plastic surfaces and seals. Dry thoroughly before plugging back in.
Can fresh food be frozen directly in this model?
Yes, the freezer has a freezing capacity of 3.5 kg of fresh food per 24 hours. For optimal freezing, place the food to be frozen in contact with an existing frozen drawer, and do not freeze more than the indicated daily capacity.
What to do if condensation appears inside the refrigerator?
A little condensation is normal when the door is frequently opened or in high heat. If it persists, check that the door seals tightly (seal is clean and not deformed) and that hot food is not placed directly in the appliance without first cooling.

How to replace the bulb in the HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK refrigerator?
Frequently Asked Questions - 03/13/2026
Response Notice-Facile

Your HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK refrigerator is equipped with an integrated LED lighting, which means that unlike traditional bulbs, the lighting system is not designed to be replaced by the user.

The LEDs in this model are permanent components, sealed directly into the appliance. They offer a very long lifespan (up to 15,000 to 50,000 hours of use) and consume very little energy, contributing to the A+ energy class of your appliance.

If the LED lighting no longer works: you must contact Hoover's technical service or call a certified technician. The replacement of this component can only be performed by a professional, as it requires intervention on the internal electrical circuits of the refrigerator.

For minor lighting issues before contacting technical service, check that the refrigerator door closes properly, as the light activation depends on a switch located at the door closure. If the door does not close completely, the light will not turn on.

For any repair or lighting replacement requests, refer to the Hoover documentation provided with your appliance or visit the Hoover website for your country to find the contact details for customer service.

Practical recommendations

Place food on the shelves in a homogeneous manner to allow air to circulate properly and to cool it.

  • Avoid contact between the food and the far end walls of the refrigerator compartment.
  • Do not introduce hot foods as they can cause deterioration of existing ones and increase energy consumption.
  • Remove the wrappings of foods before inserting them. Do not put in dishes or other containers unless previously washed. Do not obstruct the cold air ventilator openings with food.
  • Do not cover the glass shelf of the vegetable bin to allow for proper air circulation.
  • Do not store bottles in the freezer compartment as they can burst when frozen.
  • In the case of prolonged power outage, keep the doors closed so that foods remain cold as long as possible.
  • The installation of the appliance in a hot and humid location, with frequent door openings and storing large amounts of vegetables can cause the formation of condensation and affect the performance of the unit itself.
  • To prevent excessive energy consumption, the frequent or prolonged opening of the doors is not recommended.

FREEZING

Foods must be fresh. - Freeze small amounts of food at a time in order to freeze quickly. Never exceed the maximum amount indicated on the nameplate. - During freezing, do not open the freezer door. Food must be sealed, airtight. - Separate food to be frozen by those already frozen. - Label bags or containers to keep an inventory of frozen foods. - Once defrosted, consume food promptly. Do not ever refreeze foods.

NOTE:

  • PRODUCTS WITH SETTING KNOB

Normally it is not necessary to intervene with the thermostat knob. If you find excessive cooling of the products contained in the refrigerator compartment, gently turn the thermostat knob toward 0. (fig. 19)

On completion of freezing, return the knob to the usual position.

HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK - NOTE: - 1

Fig.19HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK - NOTE: - 2

- PRODUCTS WITH USER INTERFACE

See Turn ON/OFF Display

For products with a NO FROST freezer compartment, activate the SUPER FREEZING function 8 hours before introducing the foods.

For the other products, activate the SUPER FREEZING function at the time of introduction of the foods.

DEFROSTING

Defrosting the refrigerator compartment

During normal functioning, the refrigerator is automatically defrosted. There is no need to dry the drops of water present on the rear wall or to eliminate the frost (depending on functioning).

The water is conveyed to the rear part through the drain hole found there and the heat of the compressor causes it to evaporate.

  • Keep the drainage pipe (fig20) clean in the refrigerator compartment to keep it free of water.

Fig.20HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK - Defrosting the refrigerator compartment - 1

Defrosting the freezer compartment

(static products without NO-FROST technology)

When the layer of frost present in the freezer compartment exceeds 3 mm, it is recommended to proceed with the defrosting as it increases energy consumption.

1 Products with knob:

Rotate the knob to the "0" position (fig.21)

HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK - Products with knob: - 1

Fig.21HOOVER HVBF 5172BHK - Products with knob: - 2

Products with user interface

Please follow the instruction in the chapter of "Turning on/off" to switch off the products.

2) Disconnect the power cord. 3) Remove the frozen food and temporarily place them in a cool place. 4) Leave the freezer door open to speed defrosting. 5) Collect the water on the bottom of the product. 6) Dry the freezer. 7) Reconnect the power cord and set the thermostat knob to the desired position. 8) Wait a moment and reintroduce the frozen foods.

WARNING:

Absolutely avoid the use of open flames or electrical appliances, such as heaters, steam cleaners, candles, oil lamps and the like to accelerate the defrosting phase.

Do not scrape with a knife or sharp object to remove frost or ice present.

These can damage the refrigerant circuit, the leakage of which can cause a fire or damage your eyes.

Defrosting the freezer compartment

(NO-FROST products)

Defrosting is automatic.

MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

Compared to traditional light bulbs, the LEDs last longer and are environmentally friendly.

Cleaning

NOTICE:

  • Before each operation, remove the refrigerator plug from the power socket to prevent electric shocks.
  • Do not pour water directly on the outside or inside of the refrigerator itself. This could lead to oxidation and damaging of the electrical insulation.

IMPORTANT:

To prevent cracking of the inside surfaces and plastic parts, follow these suggestions:

  • Wipe away any food oils adhered to plastic components.
  • The internal parts, gaskets and external parts can be cleaned with a cloth with warm water and baking soda or a neutral soap. Do not use solvents, ammonia, bleach or abrasives.
  • Remove the accessories, for example, the shelves, from the refrigerator and from the door. Wash in hot soapy water. Rinse and thoroughly dry.
  • The back of the appliance tends to accumulate dust which can be eliminated with the use of a vacuum cleaner, after having switched off and disconnected the appliance from the electrical outlet. This provides greater energy efficiency.

ENERGY SAVINGS

For better energy savings, we suggest:

  • Installing the appliance away from heat sources and not exposed to direct sunlight and in a well ventilated room.
  • Avoid putting hot food into the refrigerator to avoid increasing the internal temperature and therefore causing continuous functioning of the compressor.
  • Do not excessively stuff foods so as to ensure proper air circulation.
  • Defrost the appliance in case there is ice (see DEFROSTING) to facilitate the transfer of cold.
  • In case of absence of electrical energy, it is advisable to keep the refrigerator door closed.
  • Open or keep the doors of the appliance open as little as possible
  • Avoid adjusting the thermostat to temperatures too cold.
  • Remove dust present on the rear of the appliance (see CLEANING).
  • Total no frost Audy (with display on door): remove all the baskets in freezer compartment;
  • Total no frost (with internal user interface for fridge and knob for freezer): remove other baskets in freezer compartment but keep bottom drawer in its position. Frost free model: remove other baskets in freezer compartment but keep bottom drawer in its position.
  • All normal static models: remove all drawers in freezer compartment.

AVOIDING NOISES

During its operation, the refrigerator emits some normal noises, such as:

HUMMING, the compressor is running. - RUMBLINGS, RUSTLINGS and HISSING, the refrigerant is flowing through the tubes. - TICKS and CLICKS, the operation shutdown of the compressor.

Small measures to reduce the vibration noises: - THE APPLIANCE IS NOT LEVEL: Adjust the feet so the appliance is level. - Containers touch each other: Avoid contact between containers and glass receptacles. - Appliance in contact: Install the appliance away from other furniture or electrical appliances. - Drawers, shelves, bins vibrate: Check the proper installation of internal accessories.

NOTE:

The refrigerant gas produces noise even when the compressor is off; it is not a defect, it is normal.

If you hear a clicking sound inside the appliance, it is normal as due to expansion of the various materials.

REVERSIBILITY OF THE DOOR (MECHANICAL)

The doors of the appliance can be reversed to allow opening to the right or left as needed.

NOTICE:

Door reversal must be performed by qualified technical personnel. Door reversal is not covered by the warranty.

Practical advice

The food should be placed in the freezer so that it does not come into contact with the air and to avoid the formation of frost. Do not place food in direct contact with the back wall of the freezer. Do not place hot food in the freezer as it may thaw the food already stored and increase energy consumption. Remove the food from its packaging before placing it in the freezer.

Do not place food in the freezer in large quantities before it has been frozen. Do not exceed the freezing capacity of the appliance. Do not place glass containers with liquids in the freezer as they may break. Do not store food in the freezer for longer than the recommended storage time. If you have a frozen product, do not open the door frequently to preserve the food for a longer period. The storage of food in the freezer should be done in small quantities and at low temperatures. Large quantities of vegetables may cause the formation of frost and affect the operation of the freezer. To reduce the formation of frost, do not open the door too often.

FREEZING

The food must be fresh. Place it in the freezer in small quantities to freeze quickly. Do not exceed the freezing capacity of the appliance. The freezing process should be completed before adding more food. Food for freezing should be of good quality. - Separate the food for freezing from the food already frozen. - Write the contents and the date on the packaging. Food that has been thawed should not be refrozen; it should be consumed quickly.

NOTE:

- APPLIANCES WITHOUT DISPLAY:

As a rule, it is not necessary to adjust the temperature. If the appliance is not cooling properly, check the door seal. If the door is not closed properly, the food may thaw. During the freezing process, the temperature may rise slightly.

Defrosting the appliance. The appliance is equipped with the NO FROST system, which facilitates defrosting. The SUPER FREEZING function should be activated 8 hours before placing fresh food. For all other products, activate the SUPER FREEZING function when placing them in the freezer.

DEFROSTING

Defrosting the refrigerator compartment

During the operation of the compressor, ice will automatically form on the back wall. It is necessary to periodically remove the ice that forms. The water flows through the drainage channel to the evaporation tray and evaporates automatically. - Keep the water drainage channel (fig. 20) clean at all times. Use the cleaning tool provided to clean the drainage hole.

2) Unplug the appliance from the power supply. 3) Remove the frozen food and wrap it in a thick cloth or paper. 4) Leave the freezer door open to allow the frost to melt. 5) Place a container of warm water in the freezer compartment. 6) Do not use sharp objects to remove the frost. 7) After defrosting, clean the freezer interior and dry it thoroughly. Plug the appliance back in and set the thermostat to the desired temperature. 8) Wait a while before placing the food back inside.

CAUTION:

Do not attempt to accelerate the defrosting process with the help of any mechanical devices, electrical appliances such as heaters, or other means, cleaning agents, sharp objects, or other similar items.

Do not attempt to remove ice with sharp objects as this may damage the appliance.

These items can damage the refrigerant circuit, causing leaks of the refrigerant and resulting in fire or injury.
