Do not place the carafe on or near an electric or gas stove, in a oven or in a microwave oven.

Avoid shocks.

PREPARING THE MACHINE

Check if all switches are on the OFF position and the lights are OFF.

Check that the steam control knob (b) is closed by turning it clockwise.

We recommend to get used to all functions of your appliance before using it for the first time.

Wash the accessories thoroughly in hot soapy water, rinse and dry them carefully.

Fill the tank (A) with cold water.

EXPRESSION FUNCTION

How to prepare an authentic espresso?

The espresso is a strong coffee, with a characteristic taste, extremely rich in aroma. Therefore, the water which arrives in the filter with a high temperature is pushed very fast through the coffee mass by a strong pressure. It extracts the nectar from the grinding and draws the essential aromas from the coffee. That's why the espresso is usually served in small "espresso" cups.

Use preferably a special espresso coffee with suitable roasting and grinding.

Remember that the espresso needs a finer grinding than the filter coffee.

BEFORE THE FIRST USE

When you use your appliance for the first time we recommend in order to wash the inner side of the appliance circuit, you have to operate it three times as described in the section HOW TO PREPARE AN EXPRESSO (WITHOUT COFFEE IN THE FILTER HOLDER).

HOW TO PREPARE AN EXPRESSO

  1. Fill the tank (A) with cold water (Fig. 1).
  2. Switch on the appliance by pressing the ON/OFF switch (c), the pilot light (m) will come on.
  3. Place the BarCREAM®Disc (l) in the filter holder (f) (Fig.2) and insert the filter (j). Fill it with ground coffee (Fig.3), pour a coffee measure for one cup and two measures for two cups. To measure out, use the measuring spoon (k). Genlyt tamp the coffee with this spoon (k) remove excess coffee from the edge of filter holder (f). This will ensure the good positioning of the filter holder in its support.
  4. Position the filter holder (f) in the support of the filter holder (g). Turn firmly to the right until it blocks (Fig. 4). The filter holder (f) should be the most possible on the right of the closing zone

and at least in the middle of the appliance. This will avoid that the filter holder (f) comes out of its housing as the pressure rises when the coffee is pouring.

  1. If the filter holder doesn't fit in the closing zone and at least in the middle of the appliance, do not operate your appliance, remove the filter holder and position it again as here above described.
  2. Place directly one or 2 cups under the filter holder (Fig.5).
  3. When the pilot light READY (o) comes on, press the READY switch (c) to operate (Fig.6).
  4. Press the same READY switch (e) once again to stop the coffee pours.

ATTENTION: Never remove the filter holder when the READY switch (e) is on.

When the water tank is empty or after a long period of non use, any particular handling is necessary because the appliance has a self-priming system. You only have to fill in the water tank.

Precaution

Be careful when you remove the filter holder (f) because the metal parts may still be hot. To remove the filter holder, turn it to the left in order to dislodge it from the appliance.

HOW TO PREPARE A CAPPUCCINO

With this appliance it is also possible to lather up milk to obtain an excellent cappuccino, to prepare hot chocolate or warm up any other beverage.

ATTENTION: Before using the cappuccino function, make sure that the filter holder was removed from its support.

  1. Press the expresso ON/OFF switch (c), the pilot light (m) will come on. Then press the Steam switch (d) (Fig.7).
  2. In order to bleed the circuit, place a container under the steam/water pipe (h) and turn the steam control knob (b) anti clockwise ( 14 to 12 revolution are enough). After a few seconds, close the steam control knob (b). When the Ready pilot light (o) comes on, the appliance will be ready to produce the desired steam. During this preparation time a little bit steam and some hot water drops may leak through the support of the filter holder and the steam pipe, you have to pay attention not to get burned.
  3. Immerse the steam pipe (h) in the milk container and turn the steam control knob (b) again to let the steam gush forth (Fig. 9).
  4. A few seconds are enough to obtain a thick and creamy milk froth that you will pour on the expresso to obtain a real Italian cappuccino.

Attention: the steam/water pipe (h) should not touch the bottom of the container because it may bother the steam flood.

Wash the steam pipe (h) after each use especially when it has been immersed in milk. If you do not wash it, the inner side of the pipe can get blocked up and it will be difficult to remove the milk residues around it. The plastic nozzle of the pipe can be removed during the cleaning (fig. 10). In case of closing of the pipe, use a needle to remove the milk residues.

  1. Just after having lathered up the milk, wipe first of all the body of the pipe with a damp cloth.
  2. Keep the cloth against the opening of the steam outlet and slowly open the steam control knob (b).
  3. Let the steam escape for one or two seconds in order to throw out the milk residues and then close the knob (b).

ATTENTION: PAY ATTENTION NOT TO GET BURNED WITH THE STEAM AND THE METAL PART OF THE PIPE (WHICH MAY BE HOT). BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL IN ORDER NOT TO GET BURNED.

Coming back from the cappuccino to the expresso

Once again press the Steam/Hot water (d) to switch if off, it lets the appliance cool down. Place a container under the pipe turn the steam control knob (b) and simultaneously press the READY switch (c) so that water can go out through the steam pipe (h) until having filled a cup with water. Press again on the switch (e) and close the steam control knob (b). The appliance is now ready to make espressos. Therefore, read the instructions HOW TO PREPARE AN EXPRESSO.

HOW TO PREPARE A TEA OR ANOTHER HOT BEVERAGE

After having followed the instructions concerning the first use, place a container under the steam/water pipe (h) and press the Expresso switch (c) when the pilot light (o) comes on. Press on the switch (e) and at the same time open the steam control knob (b) in order to obtain hot water through the steam pipe (h).

CLEANING

The body of the appliance: before cleaning the appliance, switch it off, remove the plug from the wall socket and wait until it cools down. Wipe the body of the appliance with a damp cloth. Never immerse the body of the appliance in water or any other liquid.

Filter: If the holes are blocked by coffee residues, you can wipe them with a brush (fig. 11).

Support of the filter holder: The ground coffee residues can be removed with a toothpick.

Steam pipe for cappuccino: See paragraph "How to prepare a cappuccino".

BarCREAM@DISK: Separate both parts and wipe them under hot water before assembling them.

Drip tray: In order to clean the drip tray remove it.

Attention: Never try to open or to disassemble the body of the appliance.

DESCALING

The expresso machine has to be descaled regularly. The frequency depends on the water hardness and of the use frequency.

  1. Remove the scale and the coffee residues from the filter grid and from the support of the filter holder. It is recommended to use only liquid descaling agent that can be found in shops and in the proportions indicated on the packing paper by the producer.
  2. Place one container under the support of the filter holder and another one under the steam pipe (h) (Attention: do not use the filter holder (f) during the descending).
  3. Press the ON Switch (c) and turn the steam control knob (b) in the open position and then press the switch (c). Wait until steam comes out the opening of the pipe (h).
  4. After approximatively 30 seconds, stop the hot water flow by closing the steam control knob (b) and let the descending solution flow through the support of the filter holder in the container.
  5. When the solution has finished flowing, switch off the appliance and let it cool down.
  6. Repeat this operation a second time.

Then proceed in the same way but this time only with fresh water to rinse the inner side of the circuit. For a good rinsing, the equivalent of two expresso tanks has to pass through the circuit. Switch off the appliance and remove the plug from the power supply. Let it cool down.

Attention: Never use vinegar like descaling agent.

Some recognizable signs indicate that descaling is necessary:

Increase of the noise during boiling.

A longer time of decoction cycle

For a regular use, the descaling has to be done in the following periodicity:

With little bit hard water, once a year
With middle hard water, once a trimester
With hard water, once a month.

In case of doubt concerning the water quality, ask you local water company.
