Frequently Asked Questions - 88011 WestBend

What is the capacity of the WestBend 88011?
The WestBend 88011 can cook up to 12 cups of cooked rice (approximately 6 cups of dry rice). It is suitable for 4 to 6 people.
What is the power consumption of the WestBend 88011?
The device operates at 900 W. This power ensures a quick temperature rise and even cooking of the rice.
Is the lid made of glass?
Yes, the lid is made of transparent glass. It allows you to visually monitor the progress of cooking without lifting the lid and losing steam.
How do I use the included steam basket?
Place the provided steam basket above the rice while it is cooking. You can steam vegetables, fish, or dumplings at the same time as your rice without an additional pot.
Does the keep warm function activate automatically?
Yes. As soon as cooking is finished, the device automatically switches to keep warm mode. The rice stays at the right temperature without burning or drying out.
Is the non-stick bowl dishwasher safe?
The bowl is removable and can be easily cleaned by hand with a soft sponge. It is not recommended to put the non-stick coating in the dishwasher as aggressive cycles can alter it over time.
My rice burns or sticks to the bottom - what should I do?
First, check the water/rice ratio: for white rice, generally use 1.5 to 2 volumes of water for 1 volume of dry rice. Also make sure the bowl is clean and dry before use and that the outer bottom of the bowl is in perfect contact with the heating plate.
Can brown rice or quinoa be cooked in the WestBend 88011?
The 88011 is primarily designed for white rice. For brown rice, increase the amount of water (about 2 volumes of water for 1 of rice) and expect a longer cooking time. For quinoa, rinse it thoroughly and use a slightly higher water ratio.
What accessories are included with the device?
The box contains: a vegetable steam basket, a measuring cup, and a rice spatula. These accessories are sufficient for immediate use.
What warranty covers the WestBend 88011?
The WestBend 88011 is covered by a 1-year limited warranty for parts and labor. For any service request, contact West Bend customer service directly via their official website westbend.com.
What are the dimensions and weight of the device?
The cooker measures approximately 31.5 x 31.2 x 32.5 cm (L x W x H) and weighs 3.24 kg. Its moderate size makes it compatible with most kitchen countertops.

BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

Please check all packaging material carefully before discarding. Many accessory parts are contained within the packaging material.

Wash all parts, except the heating base, in hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Cooking Rice:

  1. Place the heating base on dry, level, heat-resistant surface away from any edge.
  2. Before placing the rice cooking pot into the heating base, make sure the heating plate in the base and outside of the rice pot are clean and dry. Do not let loose rice or particles fall into the base as this will affect the cooking.
  3. Using the rice-measuring cup, add the desired number of cups of rice to the rice pot first. Add cold water to the corresponding cup level mark on the rice pot. For instance, if 4 measures of rice are added, fill the rice pot with water to the 4-cup mark. This is the amount of water needed to cook this amount of rice. Do not exceed the maximum marking on the rice pot to prevent boil over. **If you are only cooking rice, remove the steam basket during cooking.
  4. Twist the rice pot back and forth to make sure it is in contact with the heating plate. Place the cover on the pot.
  5. Plug into a 120 volt, AC electric outlet only.
  6. When plugged in, press the switch lever down. A red "COOK" light will glow indicating the rice cooker is on. See the cooking chart for approximate cooking times for different amounts of rice. Brown rice will take longer to cook than white rice, which is normal. As the rice cooks, steam will come out of the vent. Do not put the rice cooker directly under a cabinet to prevent possible damage. Some water may also spit from the cover onto the counter, which is normal.
  7. When done, the rice cooker will automatically switch to the "WARM" setting and the yellow light will glow. The red "COOK" light will go out and the yellow "WARM" light will go on. Keep the lid closed for 15 minutes to ensure thorough cooking. Carefully remove the cover with oven mitts to prevent a steam burn. Stir the rice with a plastic or wooden spoon before serving. The rice will be kept warm between 140^ - 176^ (60^ - 80^) for serving. The red "COOK" light will cycle on and off to maintain this temperature. Keep covered as much as possible to prevent the rice from drying out. If the rice is to be served immediately, unplug cord from outlet. When less than two cups of rice remain, turn the unit off by unplugging the cord from the outlet. Use oven mitts to remove the rice pot. Allow the rice cooker and all parts to cool before cleaning.
RICE MEASURESWATERAPPROXIMATE COOK TIME
2 To 2 cup level 20-30 minutes
4 To 4 cup level 25-35 minutes

  • It is not recommended to cook instant rice or wild rice in the rice cooker.
  • A 14 teaspoon of added salt will help reduce spitting that may occur.

SPECIAL NOTE:

1 measure of dry rice with 1 measure of water = 2 cups of cooked rice.

Capacity:

12 Cup Rice Cooker = 24 cups of cooked rice

10 Cup Rice Cooker = 20 cups of cooked rice.

Steaming Vegetables:

  1. Clean and prepare your vegetables.
  2. Place the heating base on a dry, level, heat-resistant surface away from any edge.
  3. Before placing the rice cooking pot into the heating base, make sure the heating plate in the base and outside of the rice bowl are clean and dry. Do not let loose rice or particles fall into the base as this will affect cooking.

  4. Place the rice pot into the heating base unit.

  5. Add the desired number of water measures according to the length of time the vegetables are to cook. Use the vegetable steaming chart below as a general guideline. As you cook with this appliance, adapt the times and measurements to your own personal tastes.

  6. Place the steaming basket into the rice pot.

  7. Add the vegetables and put the glass cover onto the appliance.

  8. Plug cord into a 120 volt, AC electric outlet only. Press the switch lever down. The red "COOK" light will glow indicating the rice cooker is on. Set a separate timer for appropriate cook time as shown in the vegetable steaming chart, below.

Cooking Rice & Steaming Vegetables:

Rice and vegetables can be prepared simultaneously. Follow the instructions for preparing rice and add 1 lb. of prepared vegetables to the steaming basket. Do not cook more than 10 cups of rice in the 12 cup model, or 8 cups in the 10 cup model, as the results may be less than satisfactory. Water amounts may need to be adjusted to attain desired results.

HELPFUL HINTS

  • The rice-measuring cup included with the rice cooker is based on 5½ ounces (160ml) rather than a standard 8 ounce (240ml) measuring cup. Depending on the model of rice cooker you have, your rice cooker can cook either 10 or 12 measures of rice. Do not exceed the maximum capacity of the rice cooker as this can result in a boil over. Typically, each measure of raw rice will yield about 2 cups of cooked rice. A ¼ teaspoon of added salt will help reduce spitting that may occur. If rice is not completely cooked, allow to stand covered for 10 to 15 minutes to finish cooking.
    • Use only water to cook the rice. Other liquids can create a boil over.
  • Doneness of the rice can vary depending on quality and type. For firmer rice use slightly less water, for softer rice, use slightly more water.
  • A thin crust will form on the bottom of the cooked rice, which is normal. This crust may be eaten if desired.
  • Use the plastic serving spoon or a wooden spoon to stir and serve the rice. Do not use metal spoons or utensils as damage may occur.
  • Leftover rice can be refrigerated in a separate, covered container for a few days if desired.
  • Altitude affects the temperature at which water boils, therefore affecting the cooking time. It is especially true at high altitudes where longer cooking times are necessary. Test for the desired consistency when the cooking times indicated have been reached. As you cook with this appliance, adapt times and measurements to your own personal tastes.
  • Cut food into uniform pieces and arrange evenly in the steam basket.
  • Do not thaw frozen vegetables before steaming.
    • Stir frozen vegetables halfway through the cooking time for best results.
    • Season the vegetables after steaming.
  • Steaming time is subject to your own personal tastes; whether you prefer crunchy steamed vegetables or softer vegetables. Adapt steaming times and measurements to your own personal tastes.

CLEANING YOUR RICE COOKER

  1. Unplug the cord from the outlet and allow to cool before cleaning.
  2. Wash the rice pot, glass cover, steam basket, cup, and spoon using warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. The rice pot and cover may need to be soaked to loosen the starch residue. Washing these items in a dishwasher is not recommended.
  3. Wipe surfaces of the heating base with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.
  4. Store the rice measuring cup and spoon inside the covered cooker for the next use.
