Frequently Asked Questions - 88010 WestBend

How to use the WestBend 88010 rice cooker?
Place the base on a stable surface. Wash the accessories before first use. Pour the rice into the pot, add water to the corresponding mark (e.g., level "4 cups" for 4 measuring cups). Make sure the outside of the pot is dry. Place the lid, plug in the appliance, push down the lever. The red COOK light turns on. At the end of cooking, the appliance automatically switches to keep warm (yellow WARM light). Let it sit for 15 minutes before serving.
How much water should I add for rice?
Use the measuring cup provided. For each cup of rice, fill with water to the corresponding mark on the pot. For example, for 4 cups of rice, fill to the "4 CUPS" level. Do not exceed the maximum mark.
Can I steam vegetables with this cooker?
Yes. Add water to the pot (see table in the manual), place the steaming basket, add vegetables and the lid. Push down the lever and set a timer according to the type of vegetable (e.g., broccoli 13-16 min). The cooker does not shut off automatically in steam mode; unplug after cooking.
How to clean the rice cooker?
Unplug and let cool. Wash the pot, lid, basket, cup and spatula with warm soapy water. Rinse and dry. Do not put in dishwasher. Wipe the heating base with a damp cloth.
What if the rice is not fully cooked?
Let the rice sit covered for an additional 10 to 15 minutes. The residual heat will finish cooking.
Can I use instant or wild rice?
It is not recommended to cook instant or wild rice in this cooker. Use only standard rice (white, brown).
How to prevent rice from overflowing?
Do not exceed the maximum capacity (12 cups of raw rice). To reduce sputtering, add 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Use only water, not other liquids.
What if the light does not turn on?
Check that the appliance is plugged into a 120 V outlet. Make sure the switch lever is fully pressed down. If the problem persists, contact customer service at (866) 290-1851.
Can I cook rice and vegetables at the same time?
Yes. Prepare rice as usual (max 10 cups for the 12-cup model), place the steaming basket with vegetables on top. Adjust the water quantity if necessary.

BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

Please check all packaging material carefully before discarding. Many accessory parts are contained within the packaging material.

Wash all parts, except the heating base, in hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

Cooking Rice:

  1. Place the heating base on dry, level, heat-resistant surface away from any edge.
  2. Before placing the rice cooking pot into the heating base, make sure the heating plate in the base and outside of the rice pot are clean and dry. Do not let loose rice or particles fall into the base as this will affect the cooking.
  3. Using the rice-measuring cup, add the desired number of cups of rice to the rice pot first. Add cold water to the corresponding cup level mark on the rice pot. For instance, if 4 measures of rice are added, fill the rice pot with water to the 4-cup mark. This is the amount of water needed to cook this amount of rice. Do not exceed the maximum marking on the rice pot to prevent boil over. **If you are only cooking rice, remove the steam basket during cooking.
  4. Twist the rice pot back and forth to make sure it is in contact with the heating plate. Place the cover on the pot.
  5. Plug into a 120 volt, AC electric outlet only.
  6. When plugged in, press the switch lever down. A red "COOK" light will glow indicating the rice cooker is on. See the cooking chart for approximate cooking times for different amounts of rice. Brown rice will take longer to cook than white rice, which is normal. As the rice cooks, steam will come out of the vent. Do not put the rice cooker directly under a cabinet to prevent possible damage. Some water may also spit from the cover onto the counter, which is normal.
  7. When done, the rice cooker will automatically switch to the "WARM" setting and the yellow light will glow. The red "COOK" light will go out and the yellow "WARM" light will go on. Keep the lid closed for 15 minutes to ensure thorough cooking. Carefully remove the cover with oven mitts to prevent a steam burn. Stir the rice with a plastic or wooden spoon before serving. The rice will be kept warm between 140^ - 176^ (60^ - 80^) for serving. The red "COOK" light will cycle on and off to maintain this temperature. Keep covered as much as possible to prevent the rice from drying out. If the rice is to be served immediately, unplug cord from outlet. When less than two cups of rice remain, turn the unit off by unplugging the cord from the outlet. Use oven mitts to remove the rice pot. Allow the rice cooker and all parts to cool before cleaning.

Steaming Vegetables:

  1. Clean and prepare your vegetables.
  2. Place the heating base on a dry, level, heat-resistant surface away from any edge.

Cooking Rice & Steaming Vegetables:

Rice and vegetables can be prepared simultaneously. Follow the instructions for preparing rice and add 1 lb. of prepared vegetables to the steaming basket. Do not cook more than 10 cups of rice in the 12 cup model, or 8 cups in the 10 cup model, as the results may be less than satisfactory. Water amounts may need to be adjusted to attain desired results.

HELPFUL HINTS

  • The rice-measuring cup included with the rice cooker is based on 5½ ounces (160ml) rather than a standard 8 ounce (240ml) measuring cup. Depending on the model of rice cooker you have, your rice cooker can cook either 10 or 12 measures of rice. Do not exceed the maximum capacity of the rice cooker as this can result in a boil over. Typically, each measure of raw rice will yield about 2 cups of cooked rice. A ¼ teaspoon of added salt will help reduce spitting that may occur. If rice is not completely cooked, allow to stand covered for 10 to 15 minutes to finish cooking.
    • Use only water to cook the rice. Other liquids can create a boil over.
  • Doneness of the rice can vary depending on quality and type. For firmer rice use slightly less water, for softer rice, use slightly more water.
  • A thin crust will form on the bottom of the cooked rice, which is normal. This crust may be eaten if desired.
  • Use the plastic serving spoon or a wooden spoon to stir and serve the rice. Do not use metal spoons or utensils as damage may occur.
  • Leftover rice can be refrigerated in a separate, covered container for a few days if desired.
  • Altitude affects the temperature at which water boils, therefore affecting the cooking time. It is especially true at high altitudes where longer cooking times are necessary. Test for the desired consistency when the cooking times indicated have been reached. As you cook with this appliance, adapt times and measurements to your own personal tastes.
  • Cut food into uniform pieces and arrange evenly in the steam basket.
  • Do not thaw frozen vegetables before steaming.
    • Stir frozen vegetables halfway through the cooking time for best results.
    • Season the vegetables after steaming.
  • Steaming time is subject to your own personal tastes; whether you prefer crunchy steamed vegetables or softer vegetables. Adapt steaming times and measurements to your own personal tastes.

CLEANING YOUR RICE COOKER

  1. Unplug the cord from the outlet and allow to cool before cleaning.
  2. Wash the rice pot, glass cover, steam basket, cup, and spoon using warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. The rice pot and cover may need to be soaked to loosen the starch residue. Washing these items in a dishwasher is not recommended.
  3. Wipe surfaces of the heating base with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.
  4. Store the rice measuring cup and spoon inside the covered cooker for the next use.
