How to install the USB drive on Windows 98SE?

Under Windows 98SE, driver installation is manual. Download the driver from www.philips.com/storage, then launch the 'New Hardware Found' wizard. Follow the instructions by pointing to the driver folder. Do not remove the drive before installation is complete.

How to safely disconnect the USB drive?

Under Windows Vista/XP, double-click the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the taskbar, select the drive, click 'Stop' then confirm. On Mac OS, drag the icon to the Trash. Wait for the 'Safe to Remove Hardware' message before unplugging.

The USB drive is not recognized by the computer, what to do?

1. Try another USB port. 2. Restart the computer. 3. Under Windows 98SE, check that the driver is correctly installed. 4. Make sure the drive is not in conflict with other devices. 5. Test on another computer to rule out a hardware issue.

Can I use the USB drive with a Mac?

Yes, the USB drive is compatible with Mac OS 9.0 or later. Simply plug it into a USB port, the system detects it automatically. To remove it, drag the icon to the Trash.

What operating systems are supported?

The USB drive supports Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000, ME, 98SE (with driver), Mac OS 9.0 or later and Linux 2.4.0 or later. For Windows 98SE, a specific driver is required.

What to do if the drive LED does not light up?

Check that the drive is correctly inserted into the USB port. Try a different port or a different computer. If the LED stays off, the drive may be defective. Contact Philips support.

Can I remove the USB drive during data transfer?

No, never remove the drive during copy or recording. This could damage data or make the drive unrecognized. Wait for the transfer to finish (the LED flashes quickly then stabilizes) and use the safe removal procedure.

How to format the USB drive?

You can format the drive via your operating system. Under Windows, right-click the drive in 'My Computer', choose 'Format'. Under Mac, use Disk Utility. Note that formatting erases all data. Preferably use the FAT32 file system for maximum compatibility.

Is the USB drive compatible with USB 3.0?

Yes, the USB drive is backward compatible. Plug it into a USB 3.0 port, it will work but at USB 2.0 speed (up to 14 MB/s read). For optimal performance, use a High-Speed USB 2.0 port.

3 Install

Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000, ME, MAC OS 9.0 or higher:

• The device driver is installed automatically when the drive is connected to a USB port of the computer. However, with some USB 2.0 cards or boards, you may need to initiate installation manually. In this case, follow the on-screen instructions to search for a suitable driver. Refer to the operating system's Help file if you need any help.

Note

Do not remove USB flash drive from the computer USB port as long as the download process is in progress.

Windows 98SE:

1 Download the device driver at http://www.philips.com/storage 2 Remove the protective cap from the USB connector and turn it backwards (fig.1). 3 Insert the flash drive USB connector into one of the computer's USB ports (fig. 2).

The New Hardware wizard starts and the drive's LED lights up. The light intensity of the LED will gradually increase and then diminish again. This will continue for as long as the drive is connected to the computer.

4 Click the Next button.

5 Click Search for the best driver for your device. Then click the Next button.

Click Specify a location. Then click the Browse button.

6 When the dialog box appears, specify the folder where the installation program is stored.

7 Click the OK button to close the dialog box. Then click the Next button.

8 Click the Next button.

9 Click the Finish button.

Installation of the driver starts.

Once the installation process is complete, a drive icon for the USB flash drive appears in the My Computer window.

10 After confirming that the drive is in standby mode, you can remove the drive from the computer's USB port.

4 Connect

Connecting the USB flash drive to your computer

Note

You can use a USB extension cable or an optional USB hub to connect the USB flash drive to your computer.

1 Remove the protective cap from the USB connector and turn it backwards (fig. 1).

2 Insert the USB flash drive's USB connector into one of the computer's USB ports (fig. 2).

The USB flash drive's LED lights up. The light intensity of the LED will gradually increase and then diminish again. This will continue for as long as the drive is connected to the computer.

5 Enjoy

Operating the USB flash drive

• Once the USB flash drive is connected to the USB port of the computer:
• a software package will automatically start up enabling you to activate various applications. See the software help file for further instructions.

• The drive icon for the USB flash drive will appear. You can now copy and save data on the drive by dragging files and folders onto the drive icon, just like when you copy data to a hard disk, CD-ROM, DVD, or floppy disk.

When copying data, the LED's light intensity will quickly increase and diminish.

Notes

• Do not remove the USB flash drive from the computer USB port while copying and saving data; otherwise, the drive will no longer be recognized by your system.
• When operating under Windows, the drive name varies depending on your Windows version.

Disconnecting the USB flash drive from your computer

Windows 98SE

• After confirming that the USB flash drive is in standby mode, you can remove the flash drive from the computer's USB port.

Windows® ME and Windows® 2000

1. Double-click the Unplug or eject hardware icon in the task bar in the lower right part of the screen. 2. In the window that appears, select the name of the device that is to be removed, then click the STOP button. 3. When the Stop a hardware device screen appears, make sure the correct information is displayed, then click the OK button. 4. When a message appears indicating that the USB flash drive can be safely removed, remove the USB flash drive from the computer's USB port.

Windows Vista, XP

1. Double-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the task bar in the lower right part of the screen. 2. In the window that appears, select the name of the device that is to be removed, then click the STOP button. 3. When the Stop a hardware device screen appears, make sure the correct information is displayed, then click the OK button. 4. When the message Safe to Remove Hardware appears, remove the USB flash drive from the computer's USB port.

Mac OS 9.0 and higher

Drag the drive icon to the Trash. After confirming that the USB flash drive is in standby mode, remove the USB flash drive from the computer's USB port.

3 Installation

Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and MAC OS 9.0 or later version:

The driver installation program starts automatically as soon as the device connects to a USB port of the computer. However, some USB 2.0 cards or hubs may require manual driver installation. In this case, follow the instructions of the driver installation program. Refer to the operating system help file for assistance.

Note

Do not remove the USB flash drive from the USB port of the computer during the installation process.

Windows 98SE:

1 Run the driver installation program from http://www.philips.com/storage 2 Remove the protective cap from the USB connector and insert it (Fig. 1). 3 Insert the USB flash drive connector into a USB port of the computer (Fig. 2).

The driver installation program starts and the LED of the device flashes. The LED will increase in brightness gradually and then remain steady. This indicates that the device is connected to the computer.

4 Click the Next button.

5 Select Search for the best driver for your device and then click Next. Select Specify a location and then click Next.

6 When the dialog box appears, select the folder where the program will be installed.

7 Click OK to close the dialog box and then click Next.

8 Click Next.

9 Click Finish.

The device is ready for use.

The installation procedure is complete. The computer will display an icon for the USB flash drive.

10 After the drive is detected and enters standby mode, you must remove it from the computer's USB port.

3 Installation

Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, 2000, ME, MAC OS 9.0 or later:

The device driver is installed automatically when you connect the drive to a USB port on your computer. However, when using some cards with USB 2.0, you may need to manually install the driver. In that case, follow the on-screen instructions to find the appropriate driver. If you need help, see the operating system help.

Note:

Do not disconnect the USB drive from the computer's USB port during the boot process.

Windows 98SE:

Download the device driver from http://www.philips.com/storage. 2 Remove the protective cap from the USB connector and turn it over (Fig. 1). 3 Insert the USB connector into an available USB port on your computer (Fig. 2).

The hardware installation wizard starts and the LED indicator lights up. The brightness of the LED gradually increases and then decreases again. This will continue as long as the drive is connected to the computer.
