kiddy guardianfix pro – operating manual

We’re happy that you have decided on the kiddy guardianfix pro as your choice for a child restraint system (A).

The kiddy guardianfix pro is another innovative product in our pro range. Our special energy-absorbent materials provide the greatest possible safety in the event of a lateral impact. Your child safety car seat is also equipped with kiddy shock absorbers (F) and with the k-fix fastening system for extensive protection during frontal impact.

To gain the most comprehensive protection for your child, the kiddy guardianfix pro must be used exactly as described in this manual.

The kiddy guardianfix pro parts are indicated by a letter in brackets in this user manual and are explained at the beginning under the point with the same descriptor.

The kiddy guardianfix pro has been tested and licensed according to the latest version of the ECE-R44/04 licensing specifications. It received design certification for the “universal” and “semi-universal” class of products.

means that it is suitable for use in all types of vehicles in any seat providing a three-point restraint compliant with ECE 16 or comparable specifications.

“Semi-universal” means that the child restraint system can additionally be secured to the ISOFIX anchor points of the vehicle.

If this is the case, the child restraint system only may be installed in cars listed in the included list of approved vehicles. The list of approved cars is updated regularly. For the latest version, see http://www.kiddy.de/content/files/guardianfix.pdf 3

ENG The kiddy guardianfix pro child restraint system is suitable for weight classes

I to III, i.e. for children weighing between 9 and 36kg (approximately 9 months to 12 years of age) or up to a height of 150cm.

Age Groups (Weight Classes):

For children weighing 9-18kg (corresponding to ages of approximately 9 months to 4 years), the appropriate impact shield (M) must be used. Please observe the proper use of the seat cushion (K) (see Section 4.1).

For use in your vehicle, please follow the manufacturer’s recommendations in your owner’s manual, or contact your dealership.

3. General safety instructions

Please read the entire instruction manual thoroughly before installing the child restraint system for the first time. Improper installation can endanger the life of your child.

Most injuries, caused by mere thoughtlessness, are easily avoided.

For children weighing 9 - 18 kg, the child restraint system must always be used with the appropriate impact shield (M) and seat cushion (K).

Use the child restraint system only for weight classes I to III (from

9 kg up to 36 kg maximum).

Check to make sure the child restraint system (A) is properly adjusted to the size of your child prior to the trip. Do not attempt to make adjustments during travel.

Make sure that all parts are properly locked in place. 4

ENG Make sure that none of the child restraint system’s (A) parts are caught in doors or reclining seats.

In vans and minivans it is particularly important to ensure that the child restraint system (A) is installed in an easily accessible seat in the event that third-party rescue is required.

The seatbelt should never be loose. During an accident strain on the body from a loose seatbelt is significantly higher than from a tight seatbelt. Make sure the seat belt buckle is properly fastened. Never leave your child unattended in the child restraint system (A).

Do not place any heavy items on the rear window shelf; these can become dangerous projectiles in an accident.

Even when transporting the child restraint system (A) in your car unoccupied, always secure it in the prescribed fashion with your vehicle’s three-point restraint (Section 7) or with the k-fix connectors

(E) to the ISOFIX anchor points of the vehicle (Section 6).

Making any modifications to the child restraint system (A) is not permitted. Doing so nullifies or impairs its effectiveness in protection.

If difficulties arise, please consult your dealer or the manufacturer. Keep the child restraint system (A) out of direct sunlight to prevent uncomfortable heating of the surface.

The child restraint system (A) may be used only in seats with threepoint restraints compliant with ECE 16 or comparable specifications.

Ensure that the child restraint system (A) was installed in the vehicle in accordance with this manual.

Permit your child to take breaks during longer trips, and be sure that she does not step out of the vehicle into traffic unattended. Always use the child safety locks in your vehicle’s passenger doors, if available.

ENG Do not use the child restraint system (A) any further if parts have been damaged or loosened after an accident (with an impact speed greater than 10 km/h) or through other causes.

Use only the seatbelt configuration prescribed by the manufacturer.

4.1 Adjusting the seat cushion height

The kiddy guardianfix pro must be used for children from 9 to 18kg with the impact shield (M) and the correctly adjusted seat cushion (K)

The kiddy guardianfix pro is fitted with a seat cushion (K) that ensures the size adjustment between the approximately 9-month-old child and the approximately 4-year-old (9-18kg) by changing the seat height.

The seat cushion’s (K) two-way adjustment to the size of your child offers considerably improved seating comfort for smaller children.

Adjust the seat cushion for your child as follows:

Level A: 9-13kg (approx. 9-18 months); seat cushion folded

Level B: 13-18kg (approx. 18 months – 4 years); seat cushion unfolded

The seat cushion (K) should always be fastened to the seat; feed the straps under the seat’s armrests (D), and fasten the buttons on the outside of the seat cover (Fig. 6).

You must always correctly position the adjustable headrest (G) in order to achieve the proper seating with the seat cushion (K). Use the seat cushion (K) only in combination with the impact shield. 6

4.2 Adjusting the head and shoulder rest

ENG The innovative adjustment system of the kiddy guardianfix pro provides the optimal adjustment to the size of your child by adjusting the headrests (G) and shoulder rests (H) in one movement.

The correct headrest setting is achieved when the head of your child lies in the narrowest position of the headrest (G) (Fig. 7+8).

To adjust the head (G) and shoulder rests (H), grasp the height adjustment handle (Q) on the back of the headrest (G) and pull it out gently, while simultaneously raising or lowering the headrest (G) to the desired height (Fig. 9).

Check to see that the headrest (G) is firmly locked in place by gently pressing down on it.

4.3 Adjustment of leg extension (AG II-III, 15-36kg)

Your child can enjoy substantially better seating comfort by adjusting the leg extension (L). The leg extension (L) can be adjusted to 4 positions.

Pull or push the leg extension (L) into the required position (Fig. 10). 4.4 Adjusting the reclined position (AG I, 9-18kg, only)

Never put the seat in the reclining or upright position while driving. To do that, stop your vehicle, unfasten the seat belt and take your child out of the child seat.

The reclining position may only be used for children of the age group I (9 – 18 kg) together with the impact shield and in case of semi-universal fixation with the k-fix connectors.

To adjust the reclining position keep the release button (S) pressed (Fig. 11;

Point 1) and at the same time pull the seat (I) away from the backrest of the vehicle (Fig. 11, Point 2). The more you pull the child safety seat forward the 7

bigger the reclining angle gets.

ENG The backrest (C) of the kiddy guardianfix pro automatically tilts into the reclining position. The reclining position is reached when the headrest (G) of the child safety seat touches the backrest of the vehicle seat (Fig. 12).

The maximum reclining position is reached when the seat (I) cannot be pulled forward any further.

The maximal angle of the reclining position depends on the position of the

Isofix anchorage points in the vehicle.

5. Seat selection and adjustment

5.1 Adjusting the car seat

Please familiarise yourself thoroughly with the use of child restraint systems (A) as described in your vehicle’s owner manual.

If installation is prevented by a headrest, it must be set at the highest position or removed (Fig. 13).

The kiddy guardianfix pro’s adjustable backrest (C) ensures that it can rest securely against the backrest of the car seat.

Position the vehicle’s reclining backrests accordingly. 5.2 Seat for universal installation

The child restraint system (A) kiddy guardianfix pro can be installed in vehicles on any seat with a three-point restraint system (Fig. 14).

The kiddy guardianfix pro can also be used in rear-facing car seats that are equipped with a three-point restraint system (Fig. 14).

If the car manufacturer allows child restraint systems on the passenger seat, the seat should be moved to the position furthest back.

ENG The connectors (E) must be retracted when the kiddy guardianfix pro is installed universal (without k-fix).

5.3 Seat for semi-universal installation

Semi-universal installation of the child restraint system is only possible on car seats fitted with ISOFIX anchors. With the aid of the k-fix connectors, the kiddy guardianfix can be securely fastened to the body of the vehicle by using these ISOFIX anchor points.

The child restraint system (A) kiddy guardianfix pro can be installed in cars and on seats that are mentioned in the list of approved vehicles.

This list is updated regularly, for the http://www.kiddy.de/content/files/guardianfix.pdf

The manufacturer recommends, if possible, semi-universal installation of the child restraint system (A) with the k-fix connectors.

6. Semi-universal installation in vehicle with k-fix

Stick both guide funnels (U) onto the ISOFIX anchor fittings between the seat and backrest of the vehicle seat (Fig. 15).

Now press the release button (S) in the front under the leg extension (L)

The k-fix connectors (E) will now automatically extend from the back of the seat (I).

Test whether the connector hooks are opened by pushing the two release mechanisms (V) forward (Fig. 17).

When the lock indicators (W) do not show "green", the connector hooks are open (Fig. 17).

ENG Place the kiddy guardianfix on a car seat that allows for semi-universal installation (Section 5.3) and adjust the car seat if necessary as described in Section 5.1.

Now push both k-fix connectors (E) onto the metal brackets (ISOFIX anchor points) and press firmly against it so that the connectors (E) lock in place

The correct locking will be confirmed by the "green" k-fix lock indicator (W)

(Fig 19). Test whether the k-fix connectors (E) are closed by jerking on the seat (I) and check the left and right k-fix connector whether the lock indicator (W) shows "green"!

Now you have fixed the kiddy guardianfix pro in the vehicle in the

(maximum) reclining position. The reclining position may only be used for the age group I (9 – 18 kg) together with the impact shield.

If you want to use the child restraint system for the age group I in the sitting position or for children of the age groups II and III (15 – 36 kg; without impact shield) you have to push the seat (I) towards the backrest of the vehicle.

Keep the release button (S) pressed in (Fig. 20; Point 1) while at the same time pushing the seat (I) toward the backrest (Fig. 20; Point 2).

To secure your child in the seat fixed with k-fix, please proceed as described in Section 7.

7. Securing the child

Semi-universal: If you want to use the car seat with the k-fix mounting, make sure it is secured in the vehicle as described in

Section 6! Universal: If you want to use the child safety car seat without the k-fix mounting, the k-fix connectors must be retracted into the seat (I)! 10

7.1 Securing the child in the age group I (9 – 18 kg)

ENG Position your kiddy child safety seat on the car seat as described in section

5.1 – 5.2 respectively 5.1 + 5.3.

If you want to use it semi-universally (fixed with k-fix) please follow the instructions from section 6.

Check to see whether your kiddy is adjusted to the size or body weight of your child (Section 4).

The kiddy guardianfix pro is secured with the three-point vehicle restraint using the belt guide on the impact shield (N) (Fig. 21).

Your kiddy guardianfix pro may only be used for Age Group I with the impact shield (M) and seat cushion (K) belonging to it.

Place your child in the seat and ensure that the child’s buttocks press against the backrest (C).

Push the impact shield (M) into the guide slots on the seat section (Fig. 22).

Slide the impact shield back so that it rests right on your child's tummy.

Then pull your vehicle’s three-point restraint out far enough so that it goes around your kiddy and can be directly fastened in your vehicle's own seatbelt lock (Fig. 23).

Make sure that the seatbelt tongue locks securely in place with a noticeable “click.”

If your Original kiddy impact shield (M) comes with toy figures, these should be placed over the impact shield for easier belt fastening (Fig. 24).

Next, feed the lap belt through the red belt guides (N) on the impact shield, and then tighten the belt (Fig. 25).

The impact shield must rest firmly on your child’s tummy.

Next, feed the shoulder belt through the impact shield belt guides (Fig. 26).

Make sure that all belts lie flat and are not twisted over each other.

ENG Then tighten the shoulder belt (Fig. 26).

Prior to the trip, check to see that lap and shoulder belts are correctly positioned on the impact shield (M), snug and not twisted. The belts must lie flat over the belt guide area of the impact shield (Fig. 26+27). Examine the belts periodically.

7.2 Securing the child in the age groups II – III (15 – 36 kg)

Use without an impact shield (M) is only allowed for children with a body weight of at least 15kg (or from approx 4 years of age).

However, we recommend using the impact shield (M) until your child weighs 18kg.

Always remove the seat cushion (K) for use without the impact shield (M).

Position your kiddy child safety seat on the car seat as described in section

5.1 – 5.2 respectively 5.1 + 5.3.

If you want to use it semi-universally (fixed with k-fix) please follow the instructions from section 6.

Place the child in the seat and make sure that your kiddy has been adjusted according to the child's body size (Section 4).

Take the following steps to secure your child with the vehicle’s own 3-point belt:

Pull out the vehicle restraint and place the lap belt under both armrests (D) of the seat (I) (Fig. 28).

Now close the belt buckle. Check to see whether the belt buckle is properly locked in place (Fig. 28).

Tighten the lap belt and place the diagonal belt on the side of the belt buckle under the armrests (D) (Fig. 29).

ENG Take the diagonal belt and feed it in between the red diagonal belt guide (B) and the headrest (G) (Fig. 30; Point 1). Now pull the belt to the inside toward the child's neck (Fig. 30; Point 2).

Please ensure that the diagonal belt guide (B) opposite the belt buckle is used (Fig. 32).

Make sure that the belt lies in the diagonal belt guide (B) and is not jammed at the front of the hook (Fig. 31).

Make sure that the belts are not twisted and do not run too close to the child’s body. Also check that the belt buckle is correctly positioned.

Now pull the belt system tight (Fig. 32).

Examine the belt distribution regularly during longer trips.

8. Opening the diagonal belt guide

To open the diagonal belt guide (B), press it downward (Fig. 33; Point 1) and then take the belt out to the side (Fig. 33; Point 2).

9. Dismantling the k-fix after semi-universal use

Keep the release button (S) pressed in (Fig. 34; Point 1) while at the same time pushing the seat (I) away from the backrest (Fig. 34; Point 2).

Open the left and right k-fix connectors (E) by pressing the release mechanisms (V) towards the front (past the "green" lock indicator (W) (Fig. 35).

When the connectors (E) are open, the kiddy guardianfix is decoupled from the body of the car.

Finally the k-fix connectors (E) must be retracted into the seat (I).

Keep the release button (S) pressed in (Fig. 36; Point 1) while pulling on the retraction tab (T) (Fig. 36; Point 2) until the connectors (E) are completely inside the seat (I).

Now let go of the release button (S) and then the retraction tab (T).

10. Removing and replacing the cover

Never use your kiddy without its original cover. The cover forms part of the safety concept.

10.1 Removing the headrest and backrest cover

The headrest and backrest cover are sewn together as a single unit.

Slide the adjustable headrest (G) up to the highest position.

Free the cover around the height adjustment handle (Q) at the back of the headrest (G) and below both diagonal belt guides (B). Pull the cover off the headrest (G) from the back toward the front.

10.2 Removing the shoulder rest covers

Slide the adjustable headrest (G) down to the lowest position. Unsnap the buttons on the rears of the shoulder rests. Now you can pull the covers off the shoulder rests (H) from the bottom to the top.

10.3 Removing the seat cover

The leg extension cover is fastened with a rubber band. You can carefully pull the cover off in an upward motion.

Afterwards open the poppers respectively Velcro® underneath the leg extension (L) and at the bottom, in the back and on the side of the child safety seat.

Remove the strap from the backrest (C) and pull the cover off in an upward motion. 14

10.4 Impact shield cover

The impact shield cover may not be removed or washed.

Please consult your dealer or manufacturer if the impact shield or its cover is damaged.

10.5 Replacing the cover

To replace the cover, follow the steps for removing the cover in reverse order

(see Sections 10.1 – 10.3).

11. Instructions for care

11.1 Cleaning the cover

The covers are an essential component of the safety concept. Therefore, you should use only original covers from the manufacturer. If you require replacement covers, you can order them from the manufacturer.

The cover and removable retainer strap for the toy figures are machine washable at 30ºC in the delicates cycle. Do not spin or put into the dryer.

11.2 Cleaning plastic parts

The plastic parts can be cleaned with a mild cleanser or with a damp cloth.

Never use aggressive cleansing agents (e.g. solvents).

12. Steps to take after an accident

After an accident with an impact speed greater than 10 km/h, the child restraint system must be sent back to the manufacturer without fail, to be checked for possible damages and replaced at no charge if deemed necessary.

For the kiddy guardianfix pro we extend a warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for up to two years. The warranty period begins on the date of purchase.

A receipt is required for all claims. The warranty covers child restraint systems that have been handled properly and are returned in a clean and orderly condition. The warranty does not cover:

- Normal wear and tear and damage due to unreasonable use

- Damages due to improper or inordinate usage.
