Why is my Pentax K50 camera not taking photos in automatic mode and only recording videos?
Frequently Asked Questions - 21/04/2026
Response Notice-Facile

If your Pentax K50 is not taking photos in automatic mode but is only recording videos, the mode selector (located on the top of the camera) is currently set to C, which corresponds to video recording mode. To switch back to taking photos, you need to turn this selector to the n position (Auto Picture), which activates the automatic photo-taking mode.

Steps to switch from video mode to automatic photo mode:

  • Locate the mode selector on the top of the Pentax K50, situated between the viewfinder and the shutter release
  • Turn this selector until the n (Auto Picture) symbol aligns with the mode indicator (the marker)
  • The LCD screen will then display the Auto Picture mode instead of video mode

Taking a photo in automatic mode:

  • Look through the optical viewfinder (with 100% coverage) or use the LCD screen in Live View mode
  • Position your subject in the central focus area
  • Press the shutter release halfway until the focus indicator ] appears in the viewfinder and a beep confirms focus
  • Press the shutter release fully to take the photo

In n mode (Auto Picture), your Pentax K50 automatically selects the optimal settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity) based on your subject and lighting conditions. The camera intelligently chooses from various specialized sub-modes: U (Standard), c (Portrait), s (Landscape), b (Macro), \ (Sport), . (Night Portrait), K (Sunset), d (Blue Sky), or x (Forest).

Other available modes: If you want more control over your photos, you can also use the manual modes by turning the selector: B (specialized scenes), P (Program), Av (Aperture Priority), Tv (Shutter Priority), or M (Full Manual).
