Frequently Asked Questions - CD005 SWEEX

How to install the driver for the Sweex CD005 cable?
Before plugging in the cable, insert the provided CD-ROM and run the installation program 'Setup.exe' in the 'driver' folder. Follow the instructions of the InstallShield wizard. After clicking 'Next' and 'Finish', plug in the cable. Windows will automatically detect the hardware.
Which operating systems are supported?
The Sweex CD005 cable is compatible with Windows 98SE, 2000, XP, and Vista. Drivers for these versions are included on the CD. Other systems like Windows 7/8/10 may work with generic drivers, but without guarantee.
Why is my serial device not recognized?
Check that the driver is installed before plugging in the cable. Make sure the assigned COM port is not conflicting. Open Device Manager, go to 'Ports (COM & LPT)' and check for 'Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port'. If necessary, change the port number in the advanced properties.
How to change the COM port number?
In Device Manager, open 'Ports (COM & LPT)', right-click on 'Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port', then 'Properties'. Go to the 'Port Settings' tab and click 'Advanced...'. You can modify the COM port number there. Avoid ports already in use.
What to do if installation fails under Windows?
Update your operating system via Windows Update. Check that the CD is properly inserted and manually run 'Setup.exe' from the 'driver' folder. If autorun does not start, go to 'My Computer', open the CD drive, then double-click 'Setup.exe'.
Can I use the Sweex CD005 cable under macOS or Linux?
The cable is officially designed for Windows only. Under macOS or Linux, it may work with third-party drivers for the Prolific PL-2303 chipset, but this is not guaranteed by Sweex.
Does the cable require external power?
No, the cable is USB powered. It does not require any external power. Make sure the USB port provides sufficient power (standard 5V/500mA).
What is the length of the Sweex CD005 cable?
The cable is approximately 1 meter long, which is a standard length for this type of adapter.
Can I plug multiple CD005 cables at the same time?
Yes, you can connect multiple cables simultaneously to different USB ports. Each cable will create a separate COM port, without conflict if the port numbers are unique.
How to resolve a COM port conflict?
In Device Manager, check the already assigned COM ports (under 'Ports (COM & LPT)'). In the cable's advanced properties, assign an unused port number (e.g., COM5 or COM6). Restart if necessary.
