This Duo Coffee-Maker has two separate water passage systems. The features and accessories of your appliance will depend on the model.
Before using for the first time
Before making coffee for the first time, let the appliance go through two or three filtration cycles using the indicated maximum amount of cold water, but without
using ground coffee. This should also be done if the appliance has not been used for an extended period of time, and after descaling.
— Scales on the water containers facilitate filling them with the correct amount of clean water. With a dual-scale, the left scale is used for regular-sized cups of approx.125 ml, while the right scale is used for smaller cups. Make sure that the indicated maximum is not exceeded.
e To prevent possible damage to the sensitive insulating glass layer inside the heat-retaining carafe (caused by ‘temperature shock” at contact with hot liquid), the carafe should be rinsed with hot water before the brewing cycle is started.
e The Duo Coffee-Maker will remain switched on until the switches are set to their off-positions.
© If several consecutive brewing cycles are required, switch off the coffee maker after each cycle and let it cool down for approx. 5 minutes.
© Important note: When filling the appliance with fresh water shortly after a brewing cycle is completed, there is a danger of scalding from hot water or steam escaping through the water outlet.
— Filling with water:
Open the water container lid, fill the container with the desired quantity of clean, cold water (using the heat-retaining carafe) and close the lid.
— Inserting the paper filter:
Open the swing-out filter holder and insert a size-4 paper filter, first folding down the perforated sides of the filter.
— Filling with ground coffee:
For each regular-sized cup (125 ml), a measure of about 6 g (= 1'z - 2 teaspoons) of medium or finely ground coffee will be
required. For smaller cups, about 4g = 1 - 12 teaspoons will be required. Close the swing- out holder afterwards.
— Preparing the glass carafe:
Make sure to fit the aroma protection lid onto the heat-retaining carafe before placing it in the appliance.
— Starting the brewing cycle:
Insert the plug into a suitable wall outlet and use the appropriate On/Off switch to turn on the side of the coffee maker to be used. The filtration cycle starts.
— Removing the freshly brewed coffee: Wait until all the water has passed through the filter before removing the carafe from the appliance. Take off the aroma- protection lid from the heat-retaining carafe, and use the proper lid to close it.
— Switching off the coffee maker:
Switch off the active side of the appliance after use and remove the plug from the wall socket
— Filing with water:
Open the container lid and fill the container with the desired quantity of clean, cold water. Caution: Do not put in more than max. 7 cups of water. Close the lid.
— AInserting the tea filter:
Insert a tea filter into the heat-retaining carafe.
— Filing with tea leaves:
Put the tea leaves into the filter.
Compared with traditional tea-brewing, only a reduced amount of tea leaves should be used, as the yield of the leaves is higher when using this appliance.
— Preparing the glass carafe:
Make sure to fit the aroma protection lid onto the heat-retaining carafe before placing it in the appliance. The filter holder should remain closed.
— Starting the brewing cycle:
Insert the plug into a suitable wall outlet and use the appropriate On/Off switch to turn on the side of the coffee maker to be used. The filtration cycle starts.
— Switching off the coffee maker:
Wait until all the water has passed through the filter, then switch off the active side of the appliance and remove the plug from the wall socket.
— Removing the freshly brewed tea:
The time the tea is left to stand largely depends on your personal taste as well as on the type of leaves used. Take the carafe out of the appliance. Remove the aroma- protection lid from the carafe and carefully lift out the tea filter. Use the proper lid to close the heat-retaining carafe.
Heat-retaining carafe
For technical reasons the screw-in lid does not close hermetically. Therefore always hold the carafe in an upright position when filled with coffee or tea. Keeping the coffee or tea hot: À heat- conserving carafe accumulates heat energy. Therefore the carafe should preferably be filled to its maximum capacity. If it is only partly filled, the temperature will not be maintained as efficiently. If you rinse out the carafe with hot water before use, the coffee or tea will be kept warm for longer.
The interior of the heat-retaining carafe insert consists of high quality double-walled glass with a vacuum in-between for better insulation. Any streaks or blister marks inside the carafe that may look like bubbles or scratches do not affect its functional use nor its heat-retaining ability.
In case the glass is damaged for one or
another reason as mentioned below, there is
a risk that the glass carafe will shatter. This
might happen quite some time after the glass
carafe has actually been damaged.
e Therefore do not drink out of the carafe and do not put your hand into it. Always close the carafe with its screw cap. The coffee can be poured out easily by half a turn of the cap, without removing it. Do not leave the carafe unattended where children may reach it.
To prevent damage to the glass carafe: Avoid shocks and great differences in temperature.
Do not stir liquid in the carafe, for example with a metal spoon.
Do not use hard brushes or abrasive cleaning agents.
Do not wipe the inside with a cloth. Dust particles may cut the glass (similar to a glass-cutter).
Do not wash in a dishwasher.
Do not use in a microwave oven.
@ Depending on the water quality (lime content) in your area as well as the frequency of use, all thermal household appliances using hot water need descaling (1e. removal of lime deposits) on a regular basis to ensure proper functioning.
A lengthening of the brewing time and increased noise during brewing indicate that descaling of the coffee maker has become necessary.
An excessive build-up of lime deposits is very difficult to remove, even when strong descaling agents are used. It may also cause the brewing system to leak. We therefore strongly recommend descaling the appliance after each thirty to forty brewing cycles. For descaling, a vinegar solution may be used.
We recommend using an environmentally friendly, commercially available descaling agent (eg citric-acid- based) for coffee makers. Prepare around 1 litre of descaling solution following the manufacturer’s instructions. You can also use 2 — 3 tablespoons of vinegar in one litre of cold water.
Pour the descaling solution into the water container, insert a paper filter into the filter holder but without adding any ground coffee as described in section Making coffee, and let the appliance run through one filtration cycle. Repeat the procedure if necessary. During descaling,
ensure sufficient ventilation and do not inhale any vinegar vapours.
— To clean the appliance after descaling, let it run through 2-3 filtration cycles using clean water only.
— Do not pour descalers down enamel sinks.
General care and cleaning
@ Before cleaning the appliance, ensure it is
disconnected from the power supply and
has completely cooled down.
To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not
clean the appliance with water and do
not immerse it in water.
Do not use abrasives or harsh cleaning
— The housing may be wiped with a slightly damp lint-free cloth and a mild household detergent. Wipe thoroughly dry afterwards.
— Dispose of the coffee grounds and rinse the filter. As a natural substance, the coffee grounds may be composted. Remove the used coffee grounds and rinse the filter holder.
— The filter holder and tea filter may be
cleaned in soapy water or in a dish-
Do not dismantle the carafe, do not wash
in a dishwasher and do not immerse it in
— Rinse the inside of the carafe with water and wipe the outside with a clean damp cloth after use.
— To remove coffee deposits from the inside of the carafe, fill it with hot water and add a teaspoon of dishwasher detergent. Close the screw-in lid and leave the carafe for some hours. Rinse out thoroughly with water afterwards.
Power-cord storage compartment
The integrated power-cord storage compartment is used for storing the power cord. The recess at the bottom facilitates limiting the length of the power cord.
