4 Proper use

The wall chaser is a product for slotting predominantly mineral materials (such as concrete or masonry) without the use of water. Do not use bonded cut-off wheels or grinding discs.

Materials that produce hazardous dust or vapours during processing must not be processed (e.g. asbestos). Separating with a coolant is not permitted.

The product may only be used in the intended manner. Any use beyond this is improper. The user, not the manufacturer, is responsible for damages or injuries of any type resulting from this.

An element of the intended use is also the observance of the safety instructions, as well as the assembly instructions and operating information in the operating manual.

Persons who operate and maintain the product must be familiar with the manual and must be informed about potential dangers.

The liability of the manufacturer and resulting damages are excluded in the event of modifications of the product.

The product may only be operated with original parts and original accessories from the manufacturer.

The safety, operating and maintenance specifications of the manufacturer, as well as the dimensions specified in the technical data, must be observed.

5 Safety instructions

General power tool safety warnings

WARNING

Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool.

Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

1) Work area safety

a) Keep your work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

2) Electrical safety

a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

3) Personal safety

a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.

b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up, or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry, or long hair can be caught in moving parts. g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards. h) Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.

4) Power tool use and care

a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such precautionary measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e) Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories, and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to

be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

h) Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.

5) Service

a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

5.1 Safety instructions for cut-off machines

a) The protective cover belonging to the electric tool must be securely attached and adjusted so that the highest degree of safety is achieved, i.e. the smallest possible part of the grinding wheel is revealed to the operator. Keep yourself and people nearby out of the plane of the rotating grinding disc. The protective cover is intended to protect the operator from fragments and accidental contact with the grinding wheel.

b) Only use diamond-coated cutting discs for your power tool. Just because you can attach the accessories to your electrical appliance does not guarantee safe use.

c) The maximum speed of the accessory tool used must be at least as high as the maximum speed specified for the power tool. Accessories which rotate faster than the maximum permissible rate can break and throw pieces into the air.

d) Grinding bodies may only be used for the recommended applications. For example: Never grind on the side surfaces of a cutting wheel. Cutting wheels are designed to remove material with the edge of the disc. Lateral forces on this grinding body can break it.

e) Always use undamaged clamping flanges of the correct size and shape for the grinding disc selected by you. Suitable flanges support the grinding disc and reduce the danger of the grinding disc breaking.

f) The external diameter and thickness of the accessory tool used must comply with the dimensions of the power tool. Incorrectly dimensioned accessory tools cannot be sufficiently shielded or controlled.

g) Grinding discs and flanges must fit exactly on your electrical tool's grinding spindle. Insertion tools that do not fit exactly on your electrical tool's grinding spindle rotate unevenly, vibrate very strongly and can cause a loss of control.

h) Do not use damaged grinding discs. Check the grinding discs for chipping and cracks before each use. If the electric tool or grinding disc falls, check whether it is damaged, or use an undamaged grinding disc. Once you have checked and inserted the grinding disc, keep yourself and anyone in the vicinity out of the plane of the rotating grinding disc and allow the appliance to run at maximum speed for one minute. Damaged grinding discs usually break during this test period.

i) Wear personal protective equipment. Depending on the application, use a face shield, safety goggles, or safety glasses. Where appropriate, wear a dust mask, hearing protection, protective gloves, or a special apron that will keep small grinding and material particles away from you. The eye protection must be capable of stopping flying debris generated by various operations. Dust or breathing masks must filter the dust generated during use. Prolonged exposure to high intensity noise may cause hearing loss.

j) Ensure that other people remain at a safe distance from your workspace. Anyone who enters the workspace must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of the workpiece or broken accessory tools can fly off and cause injury – even outside the immediate working area.

k) Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces only when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with a live wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool live and could give the operator an electric shock.

l) Keep the power cord away from any rotating accessories. If you lose control of the device, the mains cable can be severed or caught, and your hand or arm could be pulled into the rotating insert tool.

m) Never put the power tool down until the accessory tool being used has come to a complete standstill. The rotating accessory tool can come into contact with the surface and cause you to lose control of the power tool.

n) Do not run the power tool while carrying it at your side. Accidental contact of your clothing with the rotating attachment part could lead to injury.

o) Clean the ventilation slits of your power tool regularly. The engine fan draws dust into the housing, and a strong accumulation of metal dust can cause electrical hazards.

p) Never use the power tool in the vicinity of inflammable materials. Sparks can ignite such materials.

q) Do not use any accessory tools that require liquid coolant. The use of water or other liquid coolants may lead to an electric shock.

5.2 Kick-back and corresponding safety instructions

Kick-back is the sudden reaction resulting from a caught or jammed rotating insert tool, such as a grinding disc, grinding wheel, etc. Catching or jamming results in the rotating insert tool stopping abruptly. As a result, an uncontrolled electric tool is accelerated against the direction of rotation of the tool attachment at the blocking point.

For example, if a grinding disc catches or jams in the workpiece, the edge of the grinding disc that plunges into the workpiece can get caught, causing the grinding disc to break away or kick back. The grinding disc may either jump toward or away from the operator, depending on the direction of the wheel's movement at the point of pinching. Abrasive wheels may also break under these conditions.

Kick-back is the result of incorrect or deficient use of the power tool. It can be prevented by suitable precautionary measures, as described in the following.

a) Hold the power tool firmly in both hands and position your body and arms so they can absorb the force of a kickback. Always use the additional handle, if available, so that you have the maximum possible control over the kickback force or reaction forces at full speed. By taking adequate precautions, the operator can stay in control of the kickback and reaction forces.

b) Never hold your hand close to a rotating accessory tool. The accessory tool could jump out of your hand if there is a kickback.

c) Avoid the area in front of and behind the rotating cutting disc. The kickback will force the power tool in the opposite direction to the direction of rotation of the grinding disc at the blockage.

d) Take special care when working near corners, sharp edges, etc. Avoid allowing the accessory tool to bounce back from the workpiece or jam. The rotating tool attachment tends to jam at corners, sharp edges or when it bounces back. This causes a loss of control or kick-back.

e) Never use a chain or toothed saw blade, or any segmented diamond grinding wheel with slots of a width of more than 10 mm. Such accessories often cause a kickback or loss of control over the power tool.

f) Avoid blocking the cutting wheel or applying too much pressure. Do not make excessively deep cuts. Overloading the cutting wheel increases its stress and susceptibility to tilting or blocking and therefore the possibility of kick-back or breaking of the grinding wheel.

g) If the cutting wheel jams or you interrupt your work, switch the device off and hold it still in the material until the disc has come to a standstill. Never try to pull the cutting wheel out of the cut while it is still running, otherwise kick-back may occur. Determine and remedy the cause of the jamming.

h) Do not switch the electric tool on again while it is in the workpiece. Allow the cutting wheel to reach its full speed first before carefully continuing the cut. Otherwise the disc can get stuck, jump out of the workpiece or cause kick-back.

i) Support plates or large workpieces to reduce the risk of kick-back caused by a jammed cutting wheel. Large workpieces tend to sag under their own weight. The workpiece must be supported on both sides of the disc, that is both close to the cutting wheel and at the edge.

j) Apply particular caution with "plunge cuts" in existing walls or other areas that are not visible. The plunging cutting wheel can cause kick-back when cutting into gas or water pipes, electrical lines or other objects.

5.3 Additional safety instructions

WARNING

  • Dusts from materials such as paint containing lead, some types of wood and metal can be harmful to health.
  • Touching or inhaling such dust may pose risks for the operator or bystanders.
  • Wear safety goggles and a dust mask!

WARNING

Tool attachments may be sharp and become hot during use. Always wear protective gloves when handling the tool attachments.

  • Push the product through the material to be processed in the prescribed direction. Pay attention to the markings (direction of rotation of the cutting disc and direction of rotation of the product) on the protective cover. Otherwise, the cutting disc may jam, jump out of the workpiece, or cause a kickback.
  • Make sure that there are no electricity, water, or gas pipes in the area to be worked on. Use the appropriate detection devices in order to detect hidden supply lines or consult the local utility company.
  • Never use the power tool in the vicinity of inflammable materials. Sparks can ignite such materials.
  • Avoid dust accumulation at the workplace. Dusts can easily ignite.
  • Always hold the product tight with both hands during work. Make sure that you have a secure footing.

Residual risks

The product has been built according to state-of-the-art and the recognised technical safety rules. However, individual residual risks can arise during operation.

  • Health hazard due to electrical power, with the use of improper electrical connection cables. Furthermore, despite all precautions having been met, some non-obvious residual risks may still remain.
  • Residual risks can be minimised if the "Safety Instructions" and the "Intended Use" together with the operating manual as a whole are observed.
  • Prevent the product being unintentionally started up.
  • Keep your hands away from the working area when the product is in operation.
  • Comply with the stipulated maintenance and safety instructions in the operating manual.

In order to prevent the risk of serious or deadly injuries, we recommend that persons with medical implants consult with their physician and the manufacturer of the medical implant prior to operating the power tool.

6 Unpacking

Tool attachments may be sharp and become hot during use. Always wear protective gloves when handling the tool attachments.

Notes:

  • Prior to commissioning, all covers and safety devices must be mounted correctly. Damaged or illegible stickers must be replaced.
  • Before connecting the product, make certain that the data on the type plate matches the mains power data.
  • Permitted cutting disc designs: segmented diamond discs with maximum slots between the segments of 10 mm, only with negative cutting angle. Disc diameter: 125 mm, disc thickness: 1.9 mm.

8.1 Fitting/dismantling the cutting disc (6) (Fig. 1, 3)

ATTENTION

Risk of damage!

Only operate the spindle lock when the spindle is stationary. The power tool may otherwise be damaged.

WARNING

Always make sure that the tool attachment is fitted correctly!

Notes:

Only exchange separators in pairs!

Do not use separate reducing bushes or adapters to make cutting discs with a large hole fit.

At least one spacer disc must be fitted between two separating discs.

  1. Press the spindle lock (13) to fix the mounting spindle (7). Continue to press the spindle lock (13).
  2. Remove the flange nut (8). Use the enclosed flange spanner (A). You can release the spindle lock (13).
  3. Remove the separating discs (6) and the spacer discs (B/C). The mounting flange (14) remains on the mounting spindle (7). If you have removed the mounting flange (14), ensure that it is positioned correctly. The contour of the mounting flange (14) must point in the direction of the motor. When you turn the mounting flange (14), the mounting spindle (7) must also turn.
  4. Guide the cutting disc (6) from below through the protective cover (3) and place it on the mounting spindle (7). Ensure the correct direction of rotation of the cutting disc! The direction of rotation is indicated by arrows on the cutting disc (6) and the protective cover (3).
  5. Set the desired cutting width by selecting the spacer discs (B/C). Slide it onto the mounting spindle (7).
  6. Screw the flange nut (8) onto the mounting spindle (7) and fix the separating discs (6) and the spacer disc (B/C).
  7. Press the spindle lock (13) to fix the mounting spindle (7). Continue to press the spindle lock (13).
  8. Tighten the flange nut (8). Use the enclosed flange spanner (A).

8.1.1 Adjusting the groove width (Fig. 1, 3, 10)

WARNING

Regardless of the desired groove width, all spacer discs supplied must always be fitted. Otherwise the cutting disc may come loose during operation and cause injury.

The groove width results from the number of spacer discs (B/C) between the cutting discs (6) and the cutting width of the cutting discs (6).

The groove width is calculated as follows:

Groove width = thickness of the spacer discs (B/C) + width of the separating discs (6).

Thickness of the spacer discs:
Spacer discs (B) 4.70 mm
Spacer discs (C) 6.70 mm
Thickness of the cutting discs:
Cutting disc (6) 1.90 mm

Please consider the permissible groove width mentioned in the technical data (see chapter 7).

Always use the flange nut (8) and the mounting flange (14).

You may use the product with a maximum of four cutting discs (6).

8.2 Setting the cutting depth (Fig. 4)

  1. Loosen the locking lever (2).
  2. Set the cutting depth scale (12) on the protective cover (3) to the desired depth.
  3. Retighten the locking lever (2) of the cutting depth scale (12).

8.3 Dust extraction

The product generates a considerable amount of dust during operation.

Therefore, wear a dust mask and always connect an extraction system* to reduce dust exposure.

If the dust extraction system malfunctions, stop working and rectify the fault!

* = may not be included in the scope of delivery!

8.3.1 Mounting the dust extraction system (Fig. 5)

Notes:

Motor damage caused by a lack of suction is not covered by the warranty.

The extraction system must be approved for the extraction of stone dust.

  1. Connect the hose of a suitable extraction system* (e.g. industrial hoover) directly to the extraction nozzle (9).

* = not included in the scope of delivery!

9 Operation

CAUTION

Keep your hands away from the tool attachment when the product is in operation.

  • Always hold the product tight with both hands during work. Make sure that you have a secure footing.
  • Ensure that other people remain at a safe distance from your workspace. Anyone who enters the workspace must wear personal protective equipment. Fragments of the workpiece or broken accessory tools can fly off and cause injury – even outside the immediate working area.

Note:

Slots in load-bearing walls are subject to the DIN 1053 Part 1 standard or country-specific specifications. These regulations must be observed at all times. Consult the responsible structural engineer, architect or site manager before starting work.

9.1 Switching the product on/off (Fig. 6)

Switching on

  1. Reach around the rear handle (1).
  2. Press and hold the switch-on lock (11) with your index finger.
  3. Press and hold the on/off switch (10).
  4. The product starts.

After switching on, wait until the product has reached its maximum speed. Only then should you start working.

After the product has started, you can release the switch-on interlock again.

Switching off

  1. To switch off, release the on/off switch (10) and the switch-on lock (11).

CAUTION

After switching off, the product will run on. Wait until the product has come to a complete stop.

9.2 Test run

Before the first work and after each tool attachment change, carry out a test run without load. Switch off the product immediately if the tool attachment runs out of round, there is considerable vibration or abnormal noises are heard.

9.3 Overload protection

In the event of overloading, the product will switch itself off. After a cool-down period (time varies), the product can be switched back on again.

10 Working instructions

ATTENTION

Use a pipe detector to check walls and ceilings for hidden electricity, gas and water pipes before working with the product.

Curved cuts are not possible, as the insert tool would otherwise jam in the workpiece.

Protect the cutting disc from impact, shock and grease. Do not subject the cutting disc to lateral pressure.

Do not stop the cutting discs from running out by pressing against them from the side.

10.1 Working with the wall chaser (Fig. 7-9)

Notes:

• Always hold the product tight with both hands during work. Make sure that you have a secure footing. - Grooves of greater depth in hard material (e.g. concrete) cannot be cut in a single pass. - When cutting particularly hard materials, e.g. concrete with a high silica content, the cutting disc can overheat and be damaged as a result. A ring of sparks running around the cutting disc clearly indicates this. In this case, interrupt the cutting process and allow the cutting disc to idle at maximum speed for a short time in order to cool it down.

ATTENTION

Use a pipe detector to check walls and ceilings for hidden electricity, gas and water pipes before working with the product.

WARNING

Never try to pull the cutting wheel out of the cut while it is still running, otherwise kick-back may occur.

  1. Always hold the product by the rear (1) and front handle (4).
  2. Place the product switched on (with running cutting discs) with the front support roller (5) on the masonry.
  3. Plunge the cutting discs (6) into the masonry until the set cutting depth is reached and the rear support rollers (5) are also in contact with the masonry.
  4. Push the product through the material to be processed in the prescribed direction. Pay attention to the markings (direction of rotation of the cutting disc and working direction of the product) on the protective cover (3). Otherwise the cutting disc (6) may get caught, jump out of the workpiece, or cause a kickback.
  5. When you have completed the groove, switch off the product and hold it still until the cutting disc (6) has come to a standstill.
  6. Remove the product from the cut and place it to the side.
  7. Remove the remaining bar with a stripping tool*. * = may not be included in the scope of delivery!

10.2 Using the product with only one cutting disc (6)

  1. Remove the separating discs (6) as described under 8.1.
  2. Leave the rear cutting disc (6) on the product and refit the flange nut (8) as described under 8.1. The product is now also suitable for cutting through (e.g. tiles).

11 Electrical connection

The electrical motor installed is connected and ready for operation. The connection complies with the applicable VDE and DIN provisions. The customer's mains connection as well as the extension cable used must also comply with these regulations.

11.1 Damaged electrical connection cables

The insulation on electrical connection cables is often damaged.

This may have the following causes:

  • Pressure points, where connection cables are passed through windows or doors,
  • Kinks where the connection cable has been improperly fastened or routed,
  • Places where the connection cables have been cut due to being driven over, • Insulation damage due to being ripped out of the wall socket,
  • Cracks due to the insulation ageing.

Such damaged electrical connection cables must not be used and are life-threatening due to the insulation damage.

Check the electrical connection cables for damage regularly. Ensure that the connection cables are disconnected from electrical power when checking for damage.

Electrical connection cables must comply with the applicable VDE and DIN provisions. Only use connection cables of the same designation.

The printing of the type designation on the connection cable is mandatory.

Safety information for replacing damaged or defective mains connection cables

If it is necessary to replace the mains connection cable, this must be done by the manufacturer or their representative to avoid safety hazards.

11.2 Important information

In the event of overloading, the motor will switch itself off. After a cool-down period (time varies) the motor can be switched back on again.

11.3 AC motor

Connections and repair work on the electrical equipment may only be carried out by electricians.

  • The mains voltage must be 230 V - 240V~.
  • Extension cables up to 25 m long must have a cross-section of 1.5 mm².

12 Cleaning and maintenance

WARNING

Have maintenance and repair tasks that are not described in this operating manual, carried out by a specialist workshop. Use only original spare parts.

Improper maintenance or cleaning work can cause injuries!

WARNING

The product may start unexpectedly and cause injuries and burns during cleaning, repair and maintenance work.

  • Switch the product off. – Pull out the mains plug.
  • Allow the product to cool.

12.1 Cleaning

  • Keep protective devices, air vents and the motor housing as free of dust and dirt as possible. Rub the product clean with a clean cloth* or blow it off with compressed air* at low pressure. We recommend that you clean the product directly after every use.
  • Never immerse the product in water or other liquids for cleaning.
  • Clean the product at regular intervals using a damp cloth* and a little soft soap. Do not use any cleaning products or solvents; they could attack the plastic parts of the product. Make sure that no water can penetrate the product interior. • Always keep the product clean, dry and free from oil or grease. Remove dust after each use and before storage.

12.2 Maintenance

The product is maintenance-free.

There are no parts which can be repaired by the user within this product. Contact a qualified professional to have the product checked and repaired.

Check the product for obvious defects such as loose, worn or damaged parts before each use.

13 Transport

  1. To transport the product, disconnect it from the power supply and set it up in the new position you want to use it in.
  2. The product must be secured against tipping and slipping during transport in vehicles in order to prevent damage and injuries.

14 Storage

Store the product and its accessories in a dark, dry and frost-free place that is inaccessible to children.

The optimum storage temperature is between 5°C and 30°C.

Store the product in its original packaging.

Cover the product to protect it from dust or moisture. Store the operating manual with the product.

Cutting discs must be stored dry and upright and must not be stacked.

15 Repair and ordering spare parts

After repairs or maintenance, make sure that all safety-related parts are installed and are in perfect condition. All parts which may cause injury must be kept where they are inaccessible to children or others.

ATTENTION

According to the German Product Liability Act, no liability is accepted for damage caused by improper repairs or by not using original spare parts.

Such work should be performed by a customer service centre or an authorised specialist. The same applies to accessory parts.

Waste electrical and electronic equipment must not be disposed of with household waste; it must be collected and disposed of separately!

  • Used batteries or rechargeable batteries that are not permanently installed in the old device must be removed non-destructively before disposal! Their disposal is regulated by the Battery Act.
  • Owners or users of electrical and electronic devices are legally obliged to return them after use.
  • The end user is responsible for deleting their personal data from the old device being disposed of!
  • The symbol of the crossed-out dustbin means that waste electrical and electronic equipment must not be disposed of with household waste.
  • Waste electrical and electronic equipment can be handed in free of charge at the following places:

For parts that we do not manufacture ourselves, we only provide a warranty to the extent that we are entitled to warranty claims against the upstream suppliers.
