How do I turn on the Audioline PMR 012?

Press and hold the Power/Menu button for about 2 seconds until the display lights up.

Which batteries are required?

The device uses 3 x AAA batteries (not included). We recommend alkaline or rechargeable Ni-MH batteries.

How can I select a channel?

Press the Menu button briefly, then use the Up/Down buttons to scroll through channels 1-8. Press the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button to confirm.

What is the maximum range?

1 Important information

Please read these operating instructions carefully. Under no circumstances open the unit yourself and do not try to carry out your own repairs. For any claims under the warranty, please refer to your dealer.

Battery packs/Batteries

Please always use only the battery packs supplied or normal type AAA 1.5V alkaline batteries. Do not throw battery packs/batteries into the fire or immerse in water. Do not dispose of old or defective battery packs/batteries with the normal household waste. Be sure to remove the battery packs/batteries from the unit if you do not intend to use it for more than about one month. Battery packs/batteries that have been left in the unit can discharge in a few months. Flat battery packs/batteries can leak, which can damage the contacts or the sensitive electronics in the unit.

Disposal

If the useful life of the battery packs/batteries or the radios has expired, please dispose of these carefully in accordance with the statutory requirements and in a manner friendly to the environment.

Cleaning and care

The surface of the case can be cleaned with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Never use cleaning agents, particularly aggressive solvents. No attention is necessary apart from cleaning the case occasionally. Never leave the unit in a damp or dusty place. Avoid proximity to sources of heat such as radiators and do not expose the unit to direct sunlight.

Important safety information

• Do not use the radios in areas where there is a risk of explosion, such as fuel stores, blasting areas, chemical stores or areas in which chemicals or other solids are present in the air. Always follow all information signs. Areas at risk of explosion are not always clearly marked however.
• Changing battery packs/batteries in areas at risk of explosion means a danger to life.
• If the radio becomes wet, switch it off immediately and remove the battery pack or batteries. Do not use the radio until it is completely dry.
• When transmitting, always hold the radio vertically and approximately 2.5 to 5 cm from your mouth.
• When receiving, hold the radio at least 2.5 cm from your head.
• In order to avoid electromagnetic conflicts, switch the radios off if requested to do so by an information sign.
• If you are not sure whether the use of radios is permitted (aeroplanes, boats, hospitals, etc.) ask a responsible person before using the radios.
• In the car, never place radios above an airbag, as loose objects are flung away with force when the airbag is released and present a risk of injury.
• Excessive exposure to smoke, dust, vibrations, chemicals, moisture, heat or the direct rays of the sun must be avoided.

3 Setting up

3.1 Check contents of pack

The following items are supplied:

two radios with belt clip charging station with plug-in power supply

one instruction manual three front covers for each radio in different colours

two battery packs two headsets

3.2 Fitting the battery packs

Your radio is supplied with two rechargeable Ni-MH battery packs, which must be fitted before using the equipment.

1. To release the belt clip, push the upper tab outwards and slide the belt clip upwards (see 3.5).
2. Then open the compartment by pulling the catch upwards.
3. Now insert the battery pack taking care to ensure that the polarity is correct. The two round charging contacts are located at the top. Incorrect polarity can damage the unit.
4. Close the battery compartment and re-fix the belt clip (see 3.5).

You can find out how to charge the radios in Chapter 3.4.

Note: If you are not using the radios over an extended period, please remove the battery packs or any batteries that may have been used from the radios.

Battery operation

In place of the battery pack you can also use four 1.5V AAA batteries.

Please use only the best quality.

Take care to ensure that the polarity is correct when inserting. Do not place the radio in the charging station if you are using normal batteries.

3.3 Connecting the charging station

Insert the plug of the power supply into the socket on the charging station and plug the power supply into a properly installed 230 V mains socket.

For safety reasons, use only the plug-in mains power supply provided.

3.4 Charging the radios

The rechargeable battery packs for the two radios have an average operating time of up to 10 hours when fully charged.

The current battery pack or battery capacity is shown in the display.

• To charge, place the radios in the charging station for ca. 14 hours.
• When the radio is sitting properly in the charging station, the charging indicator light will come on.
• Do not leave the radios in the charging station. Continuous charging will damage the battery pack.

If only one segment is visible, you will hear a warning tone every 10 minutes to draw your attention to the low capacity.

3.5 Removing and fitting the belt clip

To release the belt clip, push the upper tab (1) outwards slightly with a sharp object or screwdriver and slide the belt clip (2) upwards.

Slide the belt clip into the guide (2) from above until it audibly engages.

3.6 Changing front covers

Your radios are each supplied with three coloured front covers, which you can change as required. To change the front cover, proceed as follows:

Removing the front cover

1. Carefully lever the front cover out of the fixing at position 1 using a screwdriver.
2. You can then release the whole front cover from the radio quite easily.

Fixing the front cover

1. Take the new front cover and place it on the radio.
2. You can then push the front cover home all round.

4 Operation

4.1 Switching the radios on and off

To switch on the radio, hold the On/Off button ⏻ pressed until a signal tone sounds. When the radio is switched on, the indicator light will flash.

To switch the radio off, hold the On/Off button ⏻ pressed once more until a signal tone sounds.

4.2 Volume control

The volume of the built-in loudspeaker can be set in 16 steps using the + and - buttons. The volume set will be shown in the display.

4.3 Display illumination

By pressing the 🖱️ button once, you can illuminate the display for 5 seconds.

4.4 Channel selection

The radios have 8 different transmission channels, which are released by the European Committee for Radio Communications as "Private Mobile Radio" channels, known as PMR for short.

In order to be able to speak between two radios, both units must be set to the same channel.

1. Press the MENU button once. The display will flash with the selected channel.
2. Select the required channel using the + and - buttons.
3. Confirm the selection with the talk button

4.4.1 Changing the call code (CTCSS)

Normally, all calls on the selected channel are sent to all radios that are in receiving range. You may therefore also hear calls that are not intended for you when other people are using radios on the same channel in the vicinity. In order to prevent this, it is possible to define a call code. In total, there are 38 of these codes available. This code is shown in the display after the channel. Check between yourselves which code has been selected.

1. Press the MENU button twice. The current call code indicator will flash in the display.

2. A new code between 0 and 38 can now be selected using the + and - buttons. If code 0 is selected, all calls will be received on the selected channel.

• The selected channel and the call code must correspond for you to be able to talk to one another.
• The radio remembers the last call code used for each channel. Always check the call code as well when you change channel.

4.5 Monitor function

To find out whether the selected channel is being used by others, press and hold the ZL button. You will now also be able to hear distant and quiet calls.

4.6 Calls between radios

To speak yourself, press the talk button. Hold the unit about 5 cm from your mouth and speak in a normal voice. When you have finished, release the talk button. The person you are speaking to will hear a signal tone (Roger beep) when you have released the talk button. This will indicate to the other subscriber that you have finished speaking and are waiting for a reply.

Note: Remember that all radios, which are set to the same channel and are within receiving range, will be able to hear your call at the same time.

Note:

• While you are holding the talk button, you will not be able to hear any incoming calls. As is usual with radio units, only one of the two participants in the call can speak at any one time.
• The indicator light will come on while your radio is transmitting.
• In order that a radio channel is not engaged for too long, you

can keep the talk button pressed for up to 60 seconds. After this, the radio will switch off the transmission and you will hear a signal tone.

Therefore, always wait until you hear the signal tone before pressing the talk button again.

4.7 Sending a call signal

You can summon the attention of the person you are calling by means of the call signal. Press the call button once. A signal tone will sound on the unit called. Remember that call signals will sound on all radios that are within receiving range and are switched to the same channel and call code. Now wait until the person called answers.

The radio has 10 different call tones.

1. Press the MENU button three times. The display will show the C indicator and the currently selected call signal will flash.
2. A new call tone between 1 and 10 can now be selected using the + and - buttons. When the setting is 0, no call signal is transmitted.

4.8 Using the headset

The radios can be used with an external microphone and earpiece, a so-called headset. In this way, you can keep your hands free for other activities. You will find the connecting socket on the left-hand side underneath a cover.

1. Always switch off the radio before connecting the headset. Open the cover and insert the plug into the socket.

2. Now switch the radio on again. The loudspeaker and microphone in the radio are now switched off in headset mode.

3. Now press the talk button once. If the talk button is not pressed, the radio will work in VOX mode. You will find further information on this in Chapter 4.9.

NOTE: Do not connect the headset to the radio when it is switched on. In this case, the radio will transmit continuously. Remove the headset and then switch off the radio.

4.9 The VOX mode

In VOX mode, the radio will automatically start to transmit as soon as your voice or another noise is detected. It is not necessary to press the call button.

The VOX mode can be used with the radios themselves or with the headsets provided.

4.9.1 Using VOX mode without the headset

Switch on the radio while pressing the talk button. The VOX indicator will appear in the display and the VOX mode will be activated.

Now speak into the radio normally. If the set sensitivity is achieved, the radio will automatically start to transmit.

To switch off VOX mode, press the talk button once. You can switch on the VOX mode again at any time by pressing the talk button very briefly.

4.9.2 Using VOX mode with the headset

Switch off the radio. Open the connector cover on the left-hand side and insert the headset plug into the socket provided for the purpose.

Now switch on the radio. The vox indicator will appear in the display and the VOX mode will be activated.

NOTE: Do not connect the headset to the radio when it is switched on. In this case, the radio will transmit continuously. Remove the headset and then switch off the radio.

Now speak normally into the headset microphone. If the set sensitivity is achieved, the radio will automatically start to transmit.

To switch off VOX mode, press the talk button once. The headset will remain in operation, but the talk button must be pressed in order to speak.

Note:

Transmission will always take place for 2 seconds, even when you speak for less than 2 seconds.

There will be a small delay before the radio starts to transmit.

4.9.3 Adjusting the VOX sensitivity

Three sensitivity levels from 1 to 3 can be set for both operating modes. With setting 1, only loud signals will be transmitted whereas, with setting 3, softer noises will also be sent. Setting 2 is the middle, default setting. The radios will store the last sensitivity used for each of the two operating modes.

1. Switch the radio to the required VOX mode.
2. Press the MENU button four times. The sensitivity that is currently set will flash in the display. Also, the letter E will be displayed in headset mode or the letter I in normal mode.
3. Select the required sensitivity between 1 and 3 using the + and - buttons.
4. Confirm the selection with the talk button

4.10 Switching keypad lock on/off

Press and hold the MENU button for three seconds. The symbol will appear in the display. When the keypad lock is activated, the MENU, and buttons will be blocked.

To switch off the keypad lock once more, press the MENU button again for three seconds.

4.11 Range of the radios

The radios have a range of up to 3 km outdoors. This maximum range can be reduced under certain circumstances. You can achieve maximum range in open, flat conditions. If there are buildings or trees in the signal path then the range will be reduced. The range is even further reduced in hilly terrain.

4.12 Channel search (scan mode)

When channel search (scan) is switched on, all channels and call codes are polled one after the other until the radio finds a channel and a call code that is being used for speech.

1. Press the ➕ ➕ button once. The symbol will appear in the display. The radio will start to search for a channel immediately. If a channel is found, which is being used for speech, the channel search will stop and you will be able to speak on this channel using the talk button ➕ ➕. The channel search will be automatically resumed after a few seconds if there is no further activity. Or, press the ➕ ➕ or ➕ button briefly in order to resume the channel search directly.

2. To deactivate this function once more, press the Z→L button once.

Note:

If a call code between 1 and 38 has been set, the search will be carried out only on the 8 channels with the selected call code. If the call code is 0, all 8 channels and the possible combinations with the 38 call codes will be scanned.

If you want to completely remove a channel from the search, please proceed as follows. As soon as the channel has been found in the channel search, press and hold the + or button for three seconds. You will hear a signal tone and the channel search will be resumed. All channels will only be available again for channel search after the radio has been switched off and on again.

4.13 Turning off the Roger beep

The person you are speaking to will hear a signal tone (Roger beep) when you have released the talk button. This will indicate to the other subscriber that you have finished speaking and are waiting for a reply. This Roger beep can also be switched off.

4.14 Using the radio as a stopwatch

Your radio can also be used as a stopwatch.

1. Press the button six times. The 0 ⁰⁰ indicator will flash in the display.
2. The stopwatch is started by means of the + button.
3. The stopwatch is stopped with the + button while the clock continues to run internally. You can take an intermediate time measurement in this way.
4. You can now reset the stopwatch to zero with the - button or press the + button and continue to display the current time measurement.

Notes:

• In the first 30 seconds, the seconds and the milliseconds will be displayed. The unit will then switch automatically to displaying minutes and seconds.
• The stop watch is not calibrated and only for your reference.

4.15 Automatic energy saving mode

The radios are designed with a power saving mode. If no transmissions take place within a certain time, the unit switches itself off automatically. The time can be set to 30, 60 or 90 minutes. In setting 0, energy saving mode is switched off.

1. Press the MENU button five times. The P indicator will appear in the display and the current setting will flash.
2. Select the required setting of 30, 60 or 90 minutes using the and - buttons. Energy saving mode is switched off with the setting 0.

AUDIOLINE equipment is manufactured and tested in accordance with the most up to date production methods. Selected materials and highly developed technology ensure trouble-free operation and long life. If your unit should develop a fault within the guarantee period, however, please contact the shop where you bought your AUDIOLINE equipment exclusively and have your purchase receipt available for inspection. The warranty period is 24 months from the day of purchase. The warranty does not apply to batteries or rechargeable batteries even when these are included with the unit.

Warranty conditions: Within the guarantee period, all defects due to material or manufacturing faults will be repaired free of charge. The guarantee is invalidated if the equipment has been tampered with by the purchaser or third parties. Any damage caused by improper handling or operation, by incorrect positioning or storage, by improper connection or installation or by excessive force or other external influences is not covered by the guarantee. In the case of complaint, we reserve the right to repair or replace defective parts or to exchange the equipment.

Exchanged parts or exchanged equipment become our property. Claims for compensation are excluded insofar as they do not relate to criminal intent or gross negligence on the part of the manufacturer. All guarantee claims according to these conditions must be raised exclusively with your dealer. Rights under the guarantee can no longer be enforced after the expiry of 24 months from purchase and delivery of our products. In the case of unnecessary or unjustified demands on the customer service department, we will levy our usual service charges for materials, time, postage and packing.
