4. Overvoltage/installation category
DMMs are categorized depending on the risk and severity of transient overvoltage that might occur at the point of test. Transients are short-lived bursts of energy induced in a system, e.g. caused by lightning strike on a power line.
The existing categories according EN 61010-1 are:

This device is only suitable for measurements up to 600V in CAT III environments.
5. Pollution degree
IEC 610 10-1 specifies different types of pollution environments, for which different protective measures are necessary to ensure safety. Harsher environments require more protection, and the protection against the pollution which is to be found in a certain environment depends mainly on the insulation and the enclosure properties. The pollution degree rating of the DVM indicates that which environment the device may be used.

7. Operation


Risk of electric shock during operation. Be very careful when measuring live circuits.
Before measuring, always make sure the meter and/or test probes are not damaged and verify the connections, selected function and range. Use measuring probes that are suitable for the selected rmeasuring mode.
- Nev or exceed the limit value for protection. This limit value is listed separately in the specifications for each range of measurement.
- Do not touch unused terminals when the meter is linked to a circuit which is being tested.
- The capacity measuring probes are only suitable for capacity, diode and resistance measurements on circuits that are not under tension. Remove all measuring probes when measuring temperature, humidity, sound level or light measurements.
- Only use the meter in the indicated overvoltage/installation category. Never measure voltages that might exceed the indicated category values.
- Disc onnect the test leads from the tested circuit before rotating the range selector in order to change functions.
- When carrying out measurements on a TV set or switching power circuits, always remember that high amplitude voltage pulses at the test points might damage the meter.
- Alw ays be careful when working with voltages above 60Vdc or 30Vac rms. Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers at all times during measurement.
- Do not measure current in circuits with voltages > 250V
- Never perform resistance, diode, continuity or capacitance measurements on live circuits. Make sure all capacitors in the circuit are discharged.
"Hold" Function:
Press the "HOLD" button to freeze the value onto the display. The Hymb ol appears on the display. Press again to resume normal operation.
"RANGE" function:
Press the RANGE button to switch between automatic and manual range selection. When switching on the meter it will be in auto-ranging mode; the AUTO icon is shown on the display. The meter chooses the most suitable range for the selected function. When desired the range can be selected manually by pressing the RANG E button. Press multiple times to scroll through the available ranges. To return to auto-ranging press; and hold the RANGE button for 2 seconds.
"Hz/DUTY" function:
Push the Hz/DUTY button in V, 400mA en 10A modeto display the frequency or duty cycle of the measured signal. In Hz mode this button is used to switch between frequency and duty cycle display.
"REL" function: (not available in frequency measuring mode)
Press the REL button during measurement to start the relative measurement function. The currently measured value is stored as reference and the display shows 000.0. Every change in the circuit is now displayed as the difference compared to the reference value. The REL symbol is shown on the display when the meter is in relative measuring mode. Press the REL button again to quit this function.
"Light" Function:
Press the LIGHT button to switch on the backlight. The backlight will switch off automatically after 5 seconds.
Automatic battery saving mode:
This function switches the meter to battery saving mode after 15 min. Push any button or move the rotary switch to reactivate the meter.
7.1 Voltage measurements

Do not measure circuits in a CATIV environment or where voltages > 600V may occur.

Always be careful when working with voltages above 60Vdc or 30Vac rms. Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers at all times during measurement. Do not touch unused terminals when the meter is linked to a circuit which is being tested.
- Con nect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the HzVΩ jack.
- Set the rotary selector to a rd press the FUNC. button to choose between AC measurements AC or DC measurements DC.
- Con nect the test leads to the circuit under test.
- The measured value appears on the display.
- When desired, select a range manually with the RANGE button.
- Pres is the Hz/DUTY button to see the frequency or duty cycle of the measured voltage (frequency range 40Hz\~400Hz). Press again to return to voltage display.
Notes:
- For DC-measurements: when a negative polarity is present at the red test lead, the indicated value is preceded by a "-" sign.
- When the measured value is higher than the selected range limit, the display will show "OL". Select a higher range.
7.2 Current measurements

Do not measure current in circuits with voltages > 600V

Current measurements: 400mA jack max. 400mA; for measurements up to 10A use the 10A jack. When measuring currents up to 10A, max. 15s continuous measurement followed by a 10 minutes break between 2 measurements.

Always be careful when working with voltages above 60Vdc or 30Vac rms. Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers at all times during measurement.
- For measurements up to 400 mA: connect the red test lead to the "mA°C" jack and the black lead to the "COM" jack.
- For measurements up to 10A: connect the red test lead to the "10A" jack and the black lead to the "COM" jack.
- Set the rotary selector to 10A for measurements up to 10A on the 10A jack. Warning: the 10A jack is not fuse protected.
- Set the rotary selector to 400mA for measurements up to 400mA on the mA°C jack.
- When the range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
- Select the AC or DC range with the FUNC. button (AC alter nating current, direct current).
- Con nect the test probes in series with the circuit.
- Read the measured value from the display.
- When desired, select a range manually with the RANGE button.
- Pres is the Hz/DUTY button to see the frequency or duty cycle of the measured voltage (frequency range 40Hz\~400Hz). Press again to return to voltage display.
Notes:
- For DC-current measurements, when a negative polarity is present at the red test lead, the indicated value is preceded by a "-" sign.
- The 400mA-range is protected against over-current with an F500mA 600V fuse; the 10A-range is not protected.
- When measuring up to 10A, max. 15s continuous measurement followed by a 10 minutes break between 2 measurements.
- When the measured value is higher than the selected range limit, the display will show "OL". Select a higher range.
7.3 Resistance measurements

Do not perform resistance measurements on live circuits.
- Con nect the red test lead to the "-H≥VΩ" j ack and the black lead to the "COM" jack.
- Set the rotary switch to
- When necessary, push the FUNC. button to select resistance measurement (Ω).
- Con nect the test probes to the circuit/component under test.
- The measured value appears on the display.
- When desired, select a range manually with the RANGE button.
Notes:
- N ever perform resistance measurements on a live circuit and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.
To increase accuracy when measuring low resistance values, first hold the tips of the measuring probes together. Press the REL button to set the display to 000.0. - Fo r resistance measurements a bove 1MΩ the meter needs a few seconds to stabilize the read-out.
- Sh ould the measured resistance exceed the selected range or in case of an open circuit, the display will show "OL".
7.4 Continuity & diode test

Do not perform continuity or diode measurements on live circuits.
- Con nect the black test lead to the COM jack and the red test lead to the -HzVΩ jack.
- Set the rotary selector to + + + .
Continuity test
- Press the FUNC. button until the symbol I appears on the display.
- Connect the test leads to the circuit undertest.
- When the measured resistance is less than 40Ω a continuous beep is produced and the resistance value is showed on the display. Should the measured resistance exceed the 400Ω or in case of an open circuit, the display will show "OL".
Diode test
- Press the FUNC. button until the symbol appears on the display.
- Connect the red test lead to the anode; connect the black test lead to the cathode of the diode. The meter will display the approximate forward voltage drop. If the lead connection is reversed, the meter will display "OL".
Notes:
- Never perform continuity or diode measurements on a live circuit and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.
- Measuring diodes that are part of a circuit might produce faulty results. Consider disconnecting them from the circuit.
7.5 Capacitance measurements

Do not perform capacitance measurements on live circuits.
- Con nect the red test lead to the "-|→HzVΩ" jack and the black lead to the "COM" jack.
- Set the rotary switch to + +
- Push the FUNC. button to select capacitancem easurement (1 F).
- Con nect the test probes to the capacitor. Mind the polarity when measuring polarized capacitors (red = "+", black = "-").
- The capacitance value is shown on the display.
Notes:
- It takes a few seconds before the meter stabilizes. This is normal behaviour.
To increase accuracy when measuring low capacitance values (<50nF), first hold the tips of the measuring probes together. Then press the REL button to set the display to 000.0.
- When the capacity is higher than the measuring range, the display shows 'OL'.
- Never perform capacitance measurements on a live circuit and make sure all capacitors are completely depleted.
7.6 Frequency measurements

Voltage range frequency measurements: 0.5Vrms \~ 10Vrms

Always be careful when working with voltages above 60Vdc or 30Vac rms. Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers at all times during measurement. Do not touch unused terminals when the meter is linked to a circuit which is being tested.
- Con nect the red test lead to the "-||►HzVΩ" jack and the black lead to the "COM" jack.
- Set the rotary switch to Hz.
- Con nect the test probes to the circuit.
- The frequency is shown on the display.
Notes:
- When the frequency is higher than the measuring range, the display shows 'OL'.
Frequency and duty-cycle can also be measured by pressing the Hz/DUTY button when in alternating current or voltages measuring mode (see §7.1 or §7.2) - Use a shielded cable for measuring small signals in a noisy environment.
7.7 Temperature measurements

Do not touch any live parts with the temperature measuring probe. Only use the included the rmocouple.
- Con nect the black plug with the COM and the red plug to mA°C- bus.
- Set the rotary switch to the 1^ range or select the 0.1^ range for more accurate measurements.
- Hold the tip of the thermo couple against the object under test.
- The temperature is shown on the display.
Note:
- When no temperature measuring probe is connected, the current environmental temperature is displayed.
7.8 Measuring relative humidity, sound level and illumination

Remove all test probes from the jacks when measuring humidity, sound level or illumination.
- Set the rotary switch to:
- %RH for measuring relative humidity. The relative humidity of the environment is shown on the display.
o dB for measuring sound level. The sound level of the environment is shown on the display. - x10Lux for measuring strong illuminations. The intensity of the light that hits the sensor is shown on the display. Multiply this value by 10 to get the correct value.
o Lux for measuring low level illuminations. The intensity of the light that hits the sensor is shown on the display. When in doubt about the intensity range, first select the x10Lux range and switch to the Lux range when possible.
- Not es:
- Illuminance may vary strongly without being perceived with the eye. For reference only:
Sunlight: 100 000 - 130 000 lu x
Daylight (indirect sunlight): 10 0 00 - 20 000 lux

8. Cleaning and maintenance

Do not replace internal parts yourself. Replace damaged or lost accessories by identical cnes with the same specifications. Order spare accessories e.g. test probes at your dealer.

WARNING:
To prevent fire, use proper fuses
Remark: refer to the warning on the back of the meter (top).

Switch off the meter and remove test leads prior to replacing the battery or fuses.

WARNING: To avoid electrical shock always disconnect the test leads prior to opening the housing.
Remark: refer to the warning on the back of the meter
a. General mainenance:
- Wip ∈ the device regularly with a moist, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol or solvents.
b. Fuse Replacement
- Remove test probes from the circuit under test. Remove the test probes from the input jacks.
- Switch off the multi-meter.
- Remove the 4 screws at the back and gently open the meter.
- Remove the fuse from the fuse holder and replace it with a new fuse of the same type and with the same specifications (F500mA/600V, ∅ 5 x 20mm).
- Clos e the meter carefully.
c. Battery Replacement
- Remove the battery as soon as the "indication appears on the display.
- Remove test probes from the circuit under test. Remove all test leads from the input jacks.
- Swit ch off the multi-meter.
- Release the two screws at the back of the meter and open the battery compartment.
- Replace the battery by a new battery of the same type and with the same specifications (6LR61/6F22 9V alkaline, do not use rechargeable batteries)
- Clos e the battery compartment carefully.
Notes:
- Never open the housing when test leads are connected to the input jacks.
- Do not try to repair or calibrate the meter yourself; contact your dealer.
○ Replace damaged accessories immediately; order them at your local dealer. - Do not use the meter when t is damaged.
- When the meter is not used for a longer period of time, the battery should be removed to avoid leakage.
Accessories:
- Use this device only with the included or similar measuring probes.

o Test lead with measuring probes: 1000V CAT III - 10A - Class II, double insulated
o Temperature probe: Type K thermocouple Chromel/Alum e I

Velleman ^® has over 35 years of experience in the electronics world and distributes its products in more than 85 countries.
All our products fulfil strict quality requirements and legal stipulations in the EU. In order to ensure the quality, our products regularly go through an extra quality check, both by an internal quality department and by specialized external organisations. If, all precautionary measures notwithstanding, problems should occur, please make appeal to our warranty (see guarantee conditions).
General Warranty Conditions Concerning Consumer Products (for EU):
- All consumer products are subject to a 24-month warranty on production flaws and defective material as from the original date of purchase.
- Velleman® can decide to replace an article with an equivalent article, or to refund the retail value totally or partially when the complaint is valid and a free repair or replacement of the article is impossible, or if the expenses are out of proportion.
You will be delivered a replacing article or a refund at the value of 100% of the purchase price in case of a flaw occurred in the first year after the date of purchase and delivery, or a replacing article at 50% of the purchase price or a refund at the value of 50% of the retail value in case of a flaw occurred in the second year after the date of purchase and delivery.
• Not covered by warranty:
- all direct or indirect damage caused after delivery to the article (e.g. by oxidation, shocks, falls, dust, dirt, humidity...), and by the article, as well as its contents (e.g. data loss), compensation for loss of profits;
- frequently replaced consumable goods, parts or accessories such as batteries, lamps, rubber parts, drive belts... (unlimited list);
- flaws resulting from fire, water damage, lightning, accident, natural disaster, etc.;
- flaws caused deliberately, negligently or resulting from improper handling, negligent maintenance, abusive use or use contrary to the manufacturer's instructions;
- damage caused by a commercial, professional or collective use of the article (the warranty validity will be reduced to six (6) months when the article is used professionally);
- damage resulting from an inappropriate packing and shipping of the article; - all damage caused by modification, repair or alteration performed by a third party without written permission by Velleman®.
- Articles to be repaired must be delivered to your Velleman ^ dealer, solidly packed (preferably in the original packaging), and be completed with the original receipt of purchase and a clear flaw description.
- Hint: In order to save on cost and time, please reread the manual and check if the flaw is caused by obvious causes prior to presenting the article for repair. Note that returning a non-defective article can also involve handling costs.
- Repairs occurring after warranty expiration are subject to shipping costs. - The above conditions are without prejudice to all commercial warranties. The above enumeration is subject to modification according to the article (see article's manual).
