How to change the battery of the DVM93?
To change the battery, turn off the multimeter and remove the back cover. Replace the used 9V battery with a new one, respecting polarity. Close the cover.
How to measure DC voltage?
Turn the selector to the V DC position. Connect the black probe to COM and the red probe to V/Ω. Place the tips on the measurement points. The reading is displayed.
How to test a diode?
Place the selector on the diode symbol. Connect the black probe to COM and the red probe to V/Ω. Touch the cathode with the black probe and the anode with the red probe. The forward voltage is displayed.
What does the 'OL' display mean?
OL stands for OverLoad. It indicates that the measured value exceeds the selected range. Choose a higher range.
How to measure continuity?
Turn the selector to the continuity symbol (beep). Connect the probes to COM and V/Ω. If the resistance is less than 30 Ω, a beep sounds.
What safety precautions should be observed?
Never measure voltages higher than 600 V. Use appropriate probes. Do not use the device in a humid or explosive environment. Disconnect the probes before changing functions.
Can I measure temperature with the DVM93?
Yes, with the supplied thermocouple probe. Place the selector on the °C/°F position, insert the probe into the dedicated sockets (often COM and V/Ω). Pay attention to polarity.
How to measure AC current?
Turn the selector to the AC A range. Connect the black probe to COM and the red probe to 10A (for high current) or mA (for low). Insert the multimeter in series in the circuit.

4. Overvoltage/installation category

DMMs are categorized depending on the risk and severity of transient overvoltage that might occur at the point of test. Transients are short-lived bursts of energy induced in a system, e.g. caused by lightning strike on a power line.

The existing categories according EN 61010-1 are:

CAT IA CAT I-rated meter is suitable for measurements on protected electronic circuits which are not directly connected to mains power, e.g. electronics circuits, control signals..
CAT IIA CAT II-rated meter is suitable for measurements in CAT I-environments and mono-phase appliances which are connected to the mains by means of a plug and circuits in a normal domestic environment, provided that the circuit is at least 10m apart from a CAT III- or 20m apart from a CAT IV-environment. E.g. household appliances, portable tools...
CAT IIIA CAT III-rated meter is suitable for measurements in CAT I- and CAT II-environments, as well as for measurements on (fixed) mono- or poly-phased appliances which are at least 10m apart from of a CAT IV-environment, and for measurements in or on distribution level equipment (fuse boxes, lighting circuits, electric ovens).
CAT IVA CAT IV-rated meter is suitable for measuring in CAT I-, CAT II- and CAT III-environments as well as on the primary supply level.Note that for all measurements on equipment for which the supply cables run outdoors (either overhead or underground) a CAT IV meter must be used.

Warning:

This device was designed in accordance with EN 61010-1 installation category CAT II 600V. This implies that certain restrictions in use apply that are related to voltages and voltage peaks which can occur within the environment of use. Refer to the table above.

5. Pollution degree

IEC 61010-1 specifies different types of pollution environments, for which different protective measures are necessary to ensure safety. Harsher environments require more protection, and the protection against the pollution which is to be found in a certain environment depends mainly on the insulation and the enclosure properties. The pollution degree rating of the DVM indicates in which environment the device may be used.

Pollution degree 1No pollution or only dry, nonconductive pollution occurs. The pollution has no influence (only to be found in hermetically sealed enclosures).
Pollution degree 2Only nonconductive pollution occurs. Occasionally, temporary conductivity caused by condensation is to be expected (home and office environments fall under this category).
Pollution degree 3Conductive pollution occurs, or dry nonconductive pollution occurs that becomes conductive due to condensation that is to be expected (industrial environments and environments exposed to outside air - but not in contact with precipitation).
Pollution degree 4The pollution generates persistent conductivity caused by conductive dust or by rain or snow. (exposed outdoor environments and environments where high humidity levels or high concentrations of fine particles occur)

6. Maintenance / battery and fuse replacement

WARNING: To avoid electrical shock always remove the test leads prior to opening case. To prevent fire, install fuses with AMP/VOLT rating as shown.Remark: refer to the warning on the back of the meter
Do not replace internal parts yourself. Replace damaged or lost accessories by identical ones with the same specifications. Order spare accessories e.g. test probes at your dealer.
Switch off the meter and remove test leads prior to replacing the battery or fuses.

a. General maintenance:

- Wipe the device regularly with a moist, lint-free cloth. Do not use alcohol, solvents or abrasive products.

b. Battery/fuse replacement

  • Replace the battery as soon as the "in dication appears on the display. Low/bad batteries can produce false readings. The fuse rarely needs to be replaced and a blown fuse is almost always caused by a human error.
  • Switch off the multi-meter.
  • Remove test probes from the circuit under test. Remove all test leads from the input jacks.
  • Remove the protective cover and release the 2 screws at the back of the meter and gently open the housing.
  • Replace the battery (9V 6LF22). Do not use rechargeable batteries and insert following the right polarity.
  • Replace the fuse: ceramic – high breaking capacity 6.3x32mm 1 x F500mA/600V & 1 x F10A/250V
  • Close the housing and tighten the 2 screws. Put the protective cover back.

8. Operating instructions

Risk of electric shock during operation. Be very careful when measuring live circuits.

Before measuring, always make sure the meter and/or test probes are not damaged and verify the connections, selected function and range.

  • Never exceed the limit value for protection. This limit value is listed separately in the specifications for each range of measurement.
  • Do not touch unused terminals when the meter is linked to a circuit which is being tested.
  • Only use the meter in the indicated overvoltage/installation category. Never measure voltages that might exceed the indicated category values.
  • When a measuring range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
  • Disconnect the test leads from the tested circuit before rotating the range selector in order to change functions.
  • When carrying out measurements on a TV set or switching power circuits, always remember that high amplitude voltage pulses at the test points might damage the meter.
  • Always be careful when working with voltages above 60Vdc or 30Vac rms. Keep your fingers behind the probe barriers at all times during measurement.
  • Do not measure current in circuits with voltages > 250V
  • Never perform resistance, diode, transistor or continuity measurements on live circuits. Make sure all capacitors in the circuit are discharged.
  • "Hold" Function: Press HOLD to freeze the value onto the display. Press again to resume normal operation.

8.1 DC Voltage measurements

  1. Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" jack and the red test lead (+) to the "V/Ω" jack.
  2. Select the appropriate V-ran ge with the FUNCTION switch. When the measuring range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
  3. Connect the test leads to the circuit.
  4. The measured value and the polarity of the red test lead are displayed on the LCD.

8.2 AC Voltage measurements

Current measurements: mA jack max. 200mA; for measurements up to 10A use the 10A jack. When measuring currents up to 10A, max. 15s continuous measurement followed by a 15 minutes break between 2 measurements.

  2. Select the A = range with the FUNCTION switch. For measurements < 200mA, when the measuring range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.

  3. Connect the test leads IN SERIES with the load under measurement.

  4. The polarity of the red test lead and the measured current are displayed on the LCD.

8.5 Measuring Resistance

Do not perform resistance measurements on live circuits and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.

  1. Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" jack and the red test lead (+) to the "W/Ω" jack.
  2. Select the -range with the FUNCTION switch. When the measuring range is unknown, always select the highest possible range and lower to the appropriate range.
  3. Connect the test leads with the resistance and read the value from the display.

Remarks :

The meter may need a few seconds to produce a stable reading for resistance measurements in excess of 1MΩ.
The over-range indication ("1.") will appear on the display if the input is not connected or if the resistance being measured exceeds the max. value of the selected range.

8.6 Testing Diodes

Do not perform diode measurements on live circuits and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.

  1. Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" jack and the red test lead (+) to the "V/Ω" jack.
  2. Select the ▶ ran with the FUNCTION switch.
  3. Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode to be tested. The forward voltage drop is now displayed. When the connection is reversed, the display shows "1".

8.7 Audible continuity test

Do not perform continuity measurements on live circuits and make sure all capacitors are completely discharged.

  1. Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" jack and the red test lead (+) to the "V/Ω" jack.
  2. Select the range with the FUNCTION switch.
  3. Connect the test probes to two random points of the circuit to be tested. The incorporated buzzer is activated if the resistance between the two test porbes is lower than ± 30 .

8.8 Transistor Test (hFE)

Do not perform transistor measurements on live circuits. Use the included adaptor socket

  1. Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" jack and the red test lead (+) to the "mA" jack.
  2. Select th hFE-range with the FUNCTION switch.
  3. Determine whether the transistor is of the NPN- or PNP-type and locate the emitter, the base and the collector. Insert the leads into the proper holes in the included transistor socket.
  4. Connect the black test lead (-) to the "COM" terminal and the red test lead (+) to the other terminal of the transistor socket.
  5. The display will show the approximate hFE-value at the moment of testing. Base current 10μA, Vce 2.8V..

8.9 Battery/ testing (BATT)

Do not perform battery tests on batteries connected to a circuit.

  1. Connect the black test lead to the "COM" jack and the red test lead to the "VΩ" jack.
  2. Set the rotary selector at the "BATT" range that matches the nominal voltage of the battery.
  3. Connect the black test lead to the negative pole and the red test lead to the positive pole of the battery.
  4. The measured voltage is shown on the display.

- All consumer products are subject to a 24-month warranty on production flaws and defective material as from the original date of purchase.

- Velleman® can decide to replace an article with an equivalent article, or to refund the retail value totally or partially when the complaint is valid and a free repair or replacement of the article is impossible, or if the expenses are out of proportion. You will be delivered a replacing article or a refund at the value of 100% of the purchase price in case of a flaw occurred in the first year after the date of purchase and delivery, or a replacing article at 50% of the purchase price or a refund at the value of 50% of the retail value in case of a flaw occurred in the second year after the date of purchase and delivery.

• Not covered by warranty:

- all direct or indirect damage caused after delivery to the article (e.g. by oxidation, shocks, falls, dust, dirt, humidity...), and by the article, as well as its contents (e.g. data loss), compensation for loss of profits;

- frequently replaced consumable goods, parts or accessories such as batteries, lamps, rubber parts, drive belts... (unlimited list);

- flaws resulting from fire, water damage, lightning, accident, natural disaster, etc. ...;

- flaws caused deliberately, negligently or resulting from improper handling, negligent maintenance, abusive use or use contrary to the manufacturer's instructions;

- damage caused by a commercial, professional or collective use of the article (the warranty validity will be reduced to six (6) months when the article is used professionally);

- damage resulting from an inappropriate packing and shipping of the article;

- all damage caused by modification, repair or alteration performed by a third party without written permission by Velleman®.

- Articles to be repaired must be delivered to your Velleman® dealer, solidly packed (preferably in the original packaging), and be completed with the original receipt of purchase and a clear flaw description.

- Hint: In order to save on cost and time, please reread the manual and check if the flaw is caused by obvious causes prior to presenting the article for repair. Note that returning a non-defective article can also involve handling costs.

- Repairs occurring after warranty expiration are subject to shipping costs.

- The above conditions are without prejudice to all commercial warranties.
