How to start the Güde GV 1700 E lawn mower?

Plug in the power cable, press and hold the safety button (located on the handle), then simultaneously pull the starter lever. Release the lever to stop the engine.

How to adjust the cutting height?

Use the central height adjustment lever located on the chassis. It allows selecting 6 positions from 25 to 70 mm. Stop the engine before any adjustment.

What type of oil to use for the wheel axles?

Use a light multi-purpose oil (such as WD-40) or sewing machine oil. Apply a few drops to the axles after cleaning.

Is the mower equipped with a mulching function?

Yes, but the mulching kit (plug) is sold separately. It allows finely chopping the grass and redistributing it on the lawn as fertilizer.

How to clean the grass catcher?

Empty the bag after each use. Wash it with clean water and a soft brush. Do not use harsh chemicals. Let it dry completely before storing.

What to do if the mower does not start?

Check that the power cable is properly plugged in and that the wall socket works. Also check the safety switch and the starter lever. If the problem persists, contact customer service.

How to sharpen the blade?

Disconnect the appliance from the power supply. Carefully remove the blade (wear gloves). Use a flat file to sharpen the cutting edge. Balance the blade before reinstalling. If it is too worn, replace it.

The mower makes an unusual noise, what to do?

Immediately stop the appliance and unplug it. Check that the blade is not damaged or loose. Inspect the wheels and chassis. If the noise persists, consult a professional.

What is the length of the power cable?

The cable is 10 meters long. For large areas, use a suitable extension cord (minimum cross-section 1.5 mm²). Fully unwind the extension cord to avoid overheating.

How to store the mower in winter?

Thoroughly clean the mower. Empty the bag. Fold the handle. Store it in a dry, frost-free place. For electric models, protect the motor from moisture.

Warranty

A warranty period of 12 months applies to commercial use and 24 months apply to private use and commences on the day of purchase of the device.

Warranty applies exclusively to failures due to defective material or workmanship. An original sale slip with indication of date of sale must be presented in case of claiming for the warranty rights.

Warranty does not cover unprofessional use such as device overload, violent use, damage caused by third party or foreign materials, failure to comply with operations and assembly manual, and normal wear and tear.

The Operating Instructions must be read thoroughly

before using the appliance. If there are any doubts regarding the appliance connection and operation, please

TO ENSURE HIGH SAFETY LEVEL, PLEASE FOLLOW CAREFULLY THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW:

CAUTION!

• Keep the place of your work clean and tidy. Mess in the place of work and on the work table increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
• Make sure the conditions you are working in are appropriate. Do not use the electric tools and devices in a moist and wet environment. Provide appropriate lighting. Do not expose the electric tools to rain or high air humidity levels. Do not switch the electric tools on near flammable liquids or gases.
• Do not let foreign persons get near the appliance. Keep all visitors and bystanders, especially children and ill or weak persons, in a safe distance from the place of your work.
• Ensure that tools are stored in a safe way. Put the appliances you no longer use to a dry place, an elevated position if possible, or lock them in order not to be accessed by other persons.
• Correct appliance should always be used for the appropriate type of work. Do not use e.g. small appliances or accessories for works that actually need to be provided using bigger appliances. Use the appliances exclusively for the designated purposes. Do not overload the appliance!
• Keep an eye out for the feeder cable. Do not pull the cable. Do not use it for unplugging the appliance. Keep the cable out of reach of heat sources, oil and sharp edges.
• Avoid unintentional switching-on. Before plugging, make always sure the appliance is switched off using the switch button.
• Special extension cables to be used outdoors only. For outdoor use, special extension cables appropriate for this purpose and adequately identified are needed.
• Be concentrated at all times. Pay attention to what you are doing. Use common sense when working. Do not use the electric tools if you are tired.
• Keep an eye out for damaged parts. Check the appliance before using it. Are any parts damaged? If there is any slight damage, consider seriously whether the appliance is going to work safely and with no faults.
• Prevent electric shock. Prevent body contact with grounded items, e.g. water piping, heating elements, cookers and fridges.
• Approved parts to be used only. Identical spare parts to be used only for servicing and repairs. For that purpose, contact the authorised customer service centre.
• Warning! Any use of accessories and extensions not explicitly recommended in these Operating Instructions can put persons and items at risk.
  • Make sure your body posture is stable
  Avoid any abnormal body posture. Ensure safe posture and keep balance at all times.
• Do not leave adjusting keys in the appliance
  Make sure you have removed all the adjusting keys and tools from the appliance before putting it into operation.

Appliance-specific safety instructions

• Wearing personal protective equipment is absolutely necessary for all works with the appliance.
• To prevent eye injury, protective glasses should always be worn.
• Check whether the guards are fitted properly before you start working.

• Do not overload the appliance. Working in the specified power range is better and safer.

• Cables should always be laid away from the appliance. Protect the cables against excess temperatures, oil and sharp edges.

• Unplug the appliance when executing repairs, providing servicing and when the appliance is not used.
• Works on electrical installation can only be executed by electricians. Spare parts to be used only.
• Clean place of work makes working easier.
• Pay attention to what you are doing. Use common sense when working.
• Do not use the appliance near flammable liquids and gases.
• Use the appliance only in an appropriate environment and do not expose it to wet and moisture.
  • Always ensure appropriate lighting for your work.
• Do not use the cable for unplugging the appliance.
• Sharp and clean tools should always be used.
• Switch the appliance immediately off and unplug it in dangerous situations or when experiencing technical difficulties.
• You must not continue in working if the appliance is damaged. The machine must be unplugged and damage removed before putting it into operation again.
  • Tools and accessories approved by the manufacturer can be used only. Using any disapproved parts poses a great risk of injury.
• Aerating on slopes should always take place from left to the right, never up and down.
• Never change the working height, i.e. height of wheels when the engine is running.
• Do not use the verticutter if the cables are damaged or worn.
• Do not plug a cable that is damaged and do not touch any damaged cable before unplugging it. A damaged cable may get in touch with conductive parts.
• Do not touch the teeth before unplugging the appliance and teeth fully stopping.
• Keep the extension cables in safe distance from the teeth. Teeth may damage the cables and get in touch with conductive parts.
• Interrupt the power supply (e.g. unplug the appliance)
• whenever you leave the appliance
• before releasing any blocked tool
  – before any check, cleaning or work on the appliance
• after hitting a foreign item
• whenever the appliance is vibrating abnormally.
• Children and persons lacking the knowledge and experience in operating the appliance or who are limited by their physical, sensory or mental skills must not use the appliance without any supervision or guidance by a safety inspector.
  • Children must be watched to prevent them from playing with the appliance.

Electrical safety

• The appliance has been designed to be used with an alternating current source only. Never try to use the appliance with any other current source.
• The appliance has double insulation. All outer metal parts are therefore electrically insulated from the current source. Double insulation represents higher electrical safety; appliance grounding is therefore not necessary.

There might be short voltage failures in less powerful electrical networks when the appliance is started. This may influence the working of other appliances, e.g. brightness fluctuation of the lighting system. Such influences need not be experienced if the network impedance is Zmax < 0.997 Ω (more information can be obtained from your local electrical energy supplier if necessary).

Behaviour in case of emergency

Apply the first aid adequate to the injury and get qualified medical assistance as quickly as possible. Protect the injured person from more accidents and calm him/her down.

For the sake of eventual accident, in accordance with DIN 13164, a workplace has to be fitted with a first-aid kit. It is essential to replace any used material in the first-aid kit immediately after it has been used. If you seek help, state the following pieces of information:

Use as designated

The verticutter is only suitable to be used around the house and in the garden and must not be used for industrial purposes. The appliance can only be used as designated. Any other use is in conflict with its purpose.

Residual risks and protective measures

Direct electrical contact

Defective cable or plug can cause life-threatening electric shock.

Have always any defective cables or plugs replaced by a professional. Use the appliance only with connection with a safety switch against stray current (RCD).

Indirect electrical contact

Injuries by conductive parts at exposed electrical or defective construction elements.

The appliance must always be unplugged for servicing purposes. To be used with a safety switch against stray current (RCD) only.

Inadequate local lighting

Insufficient lighting represents a high safety risk.

Always ensure sufficient lighting when working with the appliance.

Disposal

The disposal instructions are based on icons placed on the appliance or its package. The description of the meanings can be found in the "Marking" chapter.

Transport container disposal

The container protects the appliance against damage during transport. Container materials are usually selected so as not to harm the environment and dispose them in an environment-friendly manner. Returning the container back in the circulation saves raw materials and reduces waste disposal costs. Parts of the container (e.g. foils, styropore) can be dangerous to children. Risk of suffocation!

Keep parts of the container out of reach of children and dispose them as quickly as possible.

Operator requirements

The operator must carefully read and understand the Operating Instructions before using the appliance.

Qualification

No special qualification is necessary for using the appliance apart from detailed instruction by an expert.

Minimum age

The appliance can only be operated by persons over 18 years of age that have been familiarised with its operation and working. Young people between 16 and 18 years of age can only work with the appliance under adult supervision.

An exception includes youngsters operating the appliance within their professional education to achieve necessary skills under trainer's supervision.

Training

Using the appliance requires only corresponding instruction by a professional or reading the Operating Instructions. No special training necessary.

Transport and storing

• The appliance must be cleaned thoroughly and kept out of reach of unauthorised persons when stored for a longer period of time.
• Secure the appliance against turnover every time it is to be transported.

Assembly/first start-up

Some parts have been dismantled for the verticutter supply to make transport easier. Screws, wheels, plastic hand wheels and cable clamps are in a plastic bag. The appliance can easily be assembled by following these instructions:

Handle post assembly

• Take the verticutter out of the package.
- Insert the bottom post with the handle in holes on the verticutter.
- Now press the upper connecting post to the bottom post and screw both parts together using star screws (included in the supply) (pic. 4/A)
- Insert the connecting cable pull relief in the upper part of the post with handle. (pic. 4/D,E)
- Fix the cable from the 2-point safety switch to the engine with the attached cable clamps sideways to the upper parts of the post with handle.

Verticutter height calibration

• Adjust the verticutter height by turning the working width adjusting wheel (pic. 2/9).
• Turn the adjusting wheel to the required position and adjust the appropriate verticutter height.

Collection container assembly (pic. 3)

• Connect the cloth container with the metal frame and fasten tightly with plastic container clamps on the metal frame.
• Open the rear cover and hang the collection container on the holding rod on the cover using two hooks (pic. 4/B/C).

Connecting cable pull relief

- To prevent accidental pull-out of the connecting cable from the 2-point safety switch, please make sure the connecting cable is correctly fastened to the cable pull relief (pic. 4/D/E).

Verticutter start-up

• Before aerating, make sure the knife or its connecting elements are not damaged in any way. Replace any damaged knife if necessary.
• To prevent unintentional verticutter start-up, the 2-point safety switch is fitted with a safety button (pic. 1/2) that must be pressed before the switch lever is released (pic. 1/1).
• When releasing the switch lever the button must be in the original position.
• Make sure the extension cable is not within reach of steel springs. Press the safety switch and pull in the switch lever (pic. 1/1).
• To make sure everything works properly, this step needs to be repeated several times before aerating.

WARNING!!! You must necessarily wait until the steel springs stop rotating and are idle for any adjustment, servicing or repairs of your verticutter. The verticutter must necessarily be unplugged before these works.

Operation and adjusting

Adjust the appliance only when unplugged, otherwise, with risk of injury will be faced.

Aerating

• Select the working height appropriate for the actual grass height.
• Prevent a situation when the extension cable cannot move freely (pic. 4/F).
• Move the appliance at appropriate speed. Do not move it too fast to prevent the ejection hole from getting blocked and engine from useless overloading.
• Never work with the appliance when raining and on wet grass.

Servicing and treatment

Unplug the appliance before any servicing and treatment!

Service the appliance at regular intervals (depending on the frequency of using). Servicing needs to be strictly documented.

• Make sure all the fastening elements (screws, nuts, etc.) are always tightened to ensure safe work with the verticutter.
• Check the collection container more frequently for signs of wear.
• Check the appliance regularly and replace any worn-out or damaged parts.

Cleaning

Keep the guards, ventilation slots and engine case with no dust and dirt if possible. Wipe the appliance with a clean cloth or blow it with compressed air under low pressure. Cleaning the appliance immediately after each use is recommended. Clean the appliance regularly with a wet cloth and some liquid soap. Do not use cleaning agents and solvents as they could damage the plastic parts of the appliance. Make sure no water gets inside the appliance.
