General Power Tool Safety Warnings

WARNING! Read all safety warnings and instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE
The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
1) WORK AREA SAFETY
a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY
a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
3) PERSONAL SAFETY
a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A
wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
4) POWER TOOL USE AND CARE
a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these instructions taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for
operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
5) SERVICE
a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
ADDITIONAL SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES
Safety Instructions for All Saws
a) DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting area and the blade. Keep your second hand on auxiliary handle, or motor housing. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be cut by the blade.
b) Do not reach underneath the workpiece. The guard cannot protect you from the blade below the workpiece.
c) Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the workpiece. Less than a full tooth of the blade teeth should be visible below the workpiece.
d) Never hold piece being cut in your hands or across your leg. Secure the workpiece to a stable platform. It is important to support the work properly to minimize body exposure, blade binding, or loss of control.
e) Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring. Contact with a "live" wire will also make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and shock the operator.
f) When ripping always use a rip fence or straight edge guide. This improves the accuracy of cut and reduces the chance of blade binding.
g) Always use blades with correct size and shape (diamond versus round) of arbour holes. Blades that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw will run eccentrically, causing loss of control.
h) Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolt. The blade washers and bolt were specially designed for your saw, for optimum performance and safety of operation.
i) Keep your body positioned to either side of the blade, but not in line with the saw blade. KICKBACK could cause the saw to jump backwards (see Causes and Operator Prevention of Kickback).
j) CAUTION: Blades coast after turn off. Serious personal injury may result.
k) Avoid cutting nails. Inspect for and remove all nails from lumber before cutting.
Causes and Operator Prevention of Kickback
- Kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, bound or misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator;
- When the blade is pinched or bound tightly by the kerf closing down, the blade stalls and the motor reaction drives the unit rapidly back toward the operator;
- If the blade becomes twisted or misaligned in the cut, the teeth at the back edge of the blade can dig into the top surface of the wood causing the blade to climb out of the kerf and jump back toward the operator.
Kickback is the result of saw misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below:
a) Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw and position your arms to resist kickback forces. Position your body to either side of the blade, but not in line with the blade. Kickback could cause the saw to jump backwards, but kickback forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken. b) When blade is binding, or when interrupting a cut for any reason, release the trigger and hold the saw motionless in the material until the blade comes to a complete stop. Never attempt to remove the saw from the work or pull the saw backward while the blade is in motion or kickback may occur. Investigate and take corrective actions to eliminate the cause of blade binding. c) When restarting a saw in the workpiece, centre the saw blade in the kerf and check that saw teeth are not engaged into the material. If saw blade is binding, it may walk up or kickback from the workpiece as the saw is restarted. d) Support large panels to minimise the risk of blade pinching and kickback. Large panels tend to sag under their own weight. Supports must be placed under the panel on both sides, near the line of cut and near the edge of the panel. e) Do not use dull or damaged blades. Unsharpened or improperly set blades
produce narrow kerf causing excessive friction, blade binding and kickback.
f) Blade depth and bevel adjusting locking levers must be tight and secure before making cut. If blade adjustment shifts while cutting, it may cause binding and kickback. g) Use extra caution when making a "plunge cut" into existing walls or other blind areas. The protruding blade may cut objects that can cause kickback.
Lower Guard Safety Instructions
a) Check lower guard for proper closing before each use. Do not operate the saw if lower guard does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard into the open position. If saw is accidentally dropped, lower guard may be bent. Raise the lower guard with the retracting handle and make sure it moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part, in all angles and depths of cut.
b) Check the operation of the lower guard spring. If the guard and the spring are not operating properly, they must be serviced before use. Lower guard may operate sluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a build-up of debris.
c) Lower guard should be retracted manually only for special cuts such as "plunge cuts" and "compound cuts." Raise lower guard by retracting handle and as soon as blade enters the material, the lower guard must be released. For all other sawing, the lower guard should operate automatically.
d) Always observe that the lower guard is covering the blade before placing saw down on bench or floor. An unprotected, coasting blade will cause the saw to walk backwards, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for the blade to stop after switch is released.
Additional Safety Instructions for All Saws with Riving Knife
a) Use the appropriate riving knife for the blade being used. For the riving knife to work, it must be thicker than the body of the blade but thinner than the tooth set of the blade. b) Adjust the riving knife as described in this instruction manual. Incorrect spacing, positioning and alignment can make the riving knife ineffective in preventing kickback. c) For the riving knife to work, it must be engaged in the workpiece. The riving knife
is ineffective in preventing kickback during short cuts.
d) Do not operate the saw if riving knife is bent. Even a light interference can slow the closing rate of a guard.
Additional Safety Warnings for Circular Saw
- Wear ear protectors. Exposure to noise can cause hearing loss.
- Wear a dust mask. Exposure to dust particles can cause breathing difficulty and possible injury.
- Do not use blades of larger or smaller diameter than recommended. For the proper blade rating refer to the technical data. Use only the blades specified in this manual, complying with EN 847-1.
- Never use abrasive cut-off wheels.
- Ensure that the riving knife is adjusted so that the distance between the riving knife and the rim of the blade is not more than 5 mm, and the rim of the blade does not extend more than 5 mm beyond the lowest edge of the riving knife.
Residual Risks
The following risks are inherent to the use of circular saws.
- Injuries caused by touching the rotating parts or hot parts of the tool.
In spite of the application of the relevant safety regulations and the implementation of safety devices, certain residual risks cannot be avoided. These are:
Impairment of hearing. - Risk of squeezing fingers when changing the accessory. – Health hazards caused by breathing dust developed when working in wood.

INTENDED USE
The D23551 and D23651 circular saws have been designed for professional sawing of wood and plastic. Abrasive cutting wheels are available for cutting metal and stone.
DO NOT use under wet conditions or in presence of flammable liquids or gases.
These circular saws are professional power tools.
DO NOT let children come into contact with the tool. Supervision is required when inexperienced operators use this tool.
ENGLISH
Electrical Safety
The electric motor has been designed for one voltage only. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.

Your DEWALT tool is double insulated in accordance with EN 60745; therefore no earth wire is required.

WARNING: 115 V units have to be operated via a fail-safe isolating transformer with an earth screen between the primary and secondary winding.
If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a specially prepared cord available through the DEWALT service organisation.
Mains Plug Replacement (U.K. & Ireland Only)
If a new mains plug needs to be fitted:
• Safely dispose of the old plug. - Connect the brown lead to the live terminal in the plug. - Connect the blue lead to the neutral terminal.
WARNING: No connection is to be made to the earth terminal.
Follow the fitting instructions supplied with good quality plugs. Recommended fuse: 13 A.
Using an Extension Cable
If an extension cable is required, use an approved extension cable suitable for the power input of this tool (see technical data). The minimum conductor size is 1 mm²; the maximum length is 30 m.
When using a cable reel, always unwind the cable completely.
ASSEMBLY AND ADJUSTMENTS

WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury, turn unit off and disconnect machine from power source before installing and removing accessories, before adjusting or changing setups or when making repairs. Be sure the trigger switch is in the OFF position. An accidental start-up can cause injury.
Depth of Cut Adjustment (fig. 1, 2)
- Loosen the depth adjustment knob (q).
- Move the shoe (f) to obtain the correct depth of cut.
- Tighten the depth adjustment knob (q).

WARNING: For optimal results, allow the saw blade to protrude from the workpiece by about 5 mm (fig. 2).
Bevel Adjustment (fig. 1, 3)
The bevel angle can be adjusted between 0° and the maximum setting.
- Loosen the bevel adjustment knob (k).
- Set the bevel angle by tilting the saw shoe (f) until the mark indicates the desired angle on the scale.
- Tighten the bevel adjustment knob (k).
Shoe Adjustment for 90° Cuts (fig. 1)
- Adjust the saw to 0° bevel.
- Retract the blade guard using the lever (h) and place the saw on the blade side.
- Loosen the bevel adjustment knob (k).
- Place a square against the blade and shoe to adjust the 90° setting.
- Tighten the bevel adjustment knob (k).
Replacing the Saw Blade (fig. 1, 4)
- Engage the blade lock button (d) and unscrew the blade clamping screw (s) by turning anticlockwise using the hex wrench supplied with the tool.
- Retract the lower blade guard (i) using the lever (h) and replace the blade (j). Reinstall the washers (t, u) in the correct position.
- Check the direction of rotation of the blade.
- Thread on the blade clamping screw (s) by hand to hold the washer in position. Turn clockwise.
- Press the blade lock button (d) while turning the spindle until the blade stops rotating.
- Tighten the blade clamping screw firmly using the wrench.
Adjusting the Riving Knife (fig. 4)
For the correct adjustment of the riving knife (g), refer to figure 4. Adjust the clearance of the riving knife after changing the saw blade or whenever necessary.
- Adjust the depth of cut to 0 mm to access the clamping screws (v) of the riving knife (g).
- Loosen the screws (v) and pull out the riving knife to its maximum length.
- Adjust the clearance and tighten the screws.
Mounting and Adjusting the Parallel Fence (D23651, fig. 5)
The parallel fence (r) is used for cutting parallel to the edge of the workpiece.
MOUNTING
- Slacken the fence adjustment knob (I) to allow the parallel fence to pass.
- Insert the parallel fence (r) in the saw shoe (f) as shown.
- Tighten the fence adjustment knob (l).
ADJUSTING
- Slacken the fence adjustment knob (l) and set the parallel fence (r) to the desired width. The adjustment can be read on the scale (w).
- Tighten the fence adjustment knob (l).
Rail Guide System
Guide rails, available in different lengths as accessories, allow the use of the circular saw for precise, straight clean cuts and simultaneously protect the workpiece surface against damage. In conjunction with additional accessories, exact angled cuts, mitre cuts and fitting work can be completed with the guide rail system.
Clamps (z) are available to secure the guide rail (x) to the workpiece (fig. 6). Use of these clamps (z) ensure that the guide rail (x) is securely attached to the workpiece (y) for safe working. Once the guide rail is set to the cut line and securely fixed to the workpiece there is no movement during cutting.
IMPORTANT : The height scale on the unit is set for using the saw without a guide rail. When using the saw on the guide rail the difference in height will be approximately 5.0 mm.
SETTING THE CIRCULAR SAW TO THE GUIDE RAIL (FIG. 1, 7)
The clearance between the circular saw and the guide rail (x) must be very small to achieve best cutting results. The smaller this clearance the better the straight line finish will be on the workpiece.
The clearance can be set with the two rail adjusters (m, n) for each channel in the base for 0° cutting (m) and for 1-45° bevel cutting (n). The rail adjusters are precision cams that allow the reduction of clearance between the unit and guide rail. Once these adjusters have been set, sideways movement of the saw during cutting is kept to a minimum while allowing a smooth cutting action.
NOTE: The adjusters are set to minimum clearance in the factory and may need adjusting and setting
before the unit is used. Use the following instructions for setting the circular saw to the guide rail.
REMEMBER: Set all the rail adjusters on the saw to the guide rail.
- Undo the screw inside the rail adjuster to allow for adjustment between the saw and the guide rail.
- Retract the lower guard and place the unit on the guide rail, ensuring the blade is in the highest position.
- Rotate the adjuster until saw locks on guide rail. IMPORTANT: Make sure the saw is securely attached to the rail by trying to push the saw forward. Ensure there is no movement of the saw.
- Rotate the adjuster back slightly until saw slides easily along the rail.
- Hold the rail adjuster in position and tighten the screw again.
NOTE: ALWAYS adjust the system for use with other rails.
The rail adjusters are now set up to minimise sideways deviation when cutting with the saw on the guide rail.
Before using the saw, the anti-splinter guard (aa) on the guide rail will need tuning in. Refer to Tuning the Anti-splinter Guard.
TUNING THE ANTI-SPLINTER GUARD
The guide rail (x) is equipped with an anti-splinter guard (aa), which has to be tuned to the saw before the first use.
The anti-splinter guard (aa) is situated on each edge of the guide rail (fig. 7). The purpose of this anti-splinter guard is to provide the user with a visible blade cut line while reducing the chipping that occurs along the workpiece cut edge during cutting.
IMPORTANT: ALWAYS read and follow the Setting the Circular Saw to the Guide Rail before cutting the splinter guard!
TUNING THE ANTI-SPLINTER GUARD (FIG. 8-11)
- Place the guide rail (x) on a scrap piece of wood (bb) with a minimum length of 100 mm overhanging the workpiece. Use a clamp to ensure that the guide rail is securely attached to the workpiece. This will ensure accuracy.
- Set the unit to a 15 mm depth of cut.
- Place the front of the saw on the overhang end of the guide rail, making sure that the blade is positioned in front of the rail edge (fig. 9).
- Turn the saw on and slowly cut the splinter guard along the full length of the rail in one continuous operation. The edge of the splinter guard now corresponds exactly to the cutting edge of the blade (fig. 10).
To tune in the anti-splinter guard on the other side of the guide rail, remove the saw from the rail and rotate the rail 180°. Repeat steps 1 through 4.
NOTE: If desired, the splinter guard can be bevelled to 45°, then repeat steps 1 through 4. This allows one side of the rail for cutting parallel cuts and the other side of the rail is tuned in for 45° bevel cuts (fig. 11).
NOTE: If the anti-splinter guard is tuned in for parallel cutting on both sides then when the unit is bevelled the blade will not run true to the edge of the anti-splinter guard. This is because the pivot point of the unit bevel is not stationary and the blade moves out over when the unit is bevelled.
USING THE CORRECT CHANNEL
The saw base consists of two channels. One channel is for making parallel cuts and the other channel is for making bevel cuts.
The label at the front of the base (fig 12) indicates which channel is for which application. When making cuts make sure that the line on the label is in line with the channel on the guide rail. Figure 13 shows the saw in the parallel cutting position relative to the guide rail. Figure 14 shows the saw in the bevel cutting position relative to the guide rail.
Prior to Operation

WARNING: Make sure the guards have been mounted correctly. The saw blade guard must be in closed position.

WARNING: Make sure the saw blade rotates in the direction of the arrow on the blade.
OPERATION

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, turn tool off and disconnect tool from power source before making any adjustments or removing/installing attachments or accessories.

WARNING: Before using the circular saw, ALWAYS make sure all functions are working properly!
Instructions for Use

• Always observe the safety instructions and applicable regulations. - Ensure the material to be sawn is firmly secured in place. - Apply only a gentle pressure to the tool and do not exert side pressure on the saw blade. - Avoid overloading. • Do not use excessively worn saw blades. • Do not use your saw for pocket cuts.
Proper Hand Position (fig. 1, 15)

WARNING: To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, ALWAYS hold securely in anticipation of a sudden reaction.
Proper hand position requires one hand on the front handle (c), with the other hand on the main handle (dd).
Switching On and Off (fig. 1)
For safety reasons the trigger switch (a) of your tool is equipped with a lock-off button (b).
- Press the lock-off button to unlock the tool.
- Press the trigger switch (a) to run the tool. As soon as the trigger switch is released the lock-off switch is automatically activated to prevent unintended starting of the machine.

- Do not switch the tool on or off when the saw blade touches the workpiece or other materials.
- Do not operate the spindle lock while the tool is running.
Holding and Guiding the Tool (Fig. 1)
- Hold the tool by the main grip and the front handle (c) to guide the saw properly.
NOTE: For optimum results, clamp the workpiece bottom up.
- Follow the line drawn on the workpiece using mark (p) for parallel cutting and mark (o) for cutting 45° bevel angle.

WARNING: ALWAYS lead the cord away in line with the rear of the tool.
Dust Extraction (Fig. 1)

WARNING: Risk of dust inhalation. To reduce the risk of personal injury, ALWAYS wear an approved dust mask.
Your tool is fitted with a dust extraction outlet (e).
Whenever possible, connect a dust extraction device designed in accordance with the relevant regulations regarding dust emission.

WARNING: ALWAYS use a vacuum extractor designed in compliance with the applicable directives regarding dust emission when sawing wood. Vacuum hoses of most common vacuum cleaners will fit directly into the dust extraction outlet.

WARNING: Do not use a vacuum extractor without proper spark protection when sawing metal.
MAINTENANCE
Your DEWALT power tool has been designed to operate over a long period of time with a minimum of maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation depends upon proper tool care and regular cleaning.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of injury, turn unit off and disconnect machine from power source before installing and removing accessories, before adjusting or changing set-ups or when making repairs. Be sure the trigger switch is in the OFF position. An accidental start-up can cause injury.

WARNING: If the saw blade is worn replace it with a new sharp blade.

Cleaning

WARNING: Blow dirt and dust out of the main housing with dry air as often as dirt is seen collecting in and around the air vents. Wear approved eye protection and approved dust mask when performing this procedure.

WARNING: Never use solvents or other harsh chemicals for cleaning the non-metallic parts of the tool. These chemicals may weaken the materials used in these parts. Use a cloth dampened only with water and mild soap. Never let any liquid get inside the tool; never immerse any part of the tool into a liquid.
Optional Accessories

WARNING: Since accessories, other than those offered by DEWALT, have not been tested with this product, use of such accessories with this tool could be hazardous. To reduce the risk of injury, only DEWALT recommended accessories should be used with this product.
Consult your dealer for further information on the appropriate accessories.
Protecting the Environment

Separate collection. This product must not be disposed of with normal household waste.

Lubrication
Your power tool requires no additional lubrication.
