Frequently Asked Questions - Scroll Essential Storage Options

How do I access my Scroll Essential NAS for the first time?

Connect the NAS to your network via Ethernet. Power it on and wait for the LED to turn blue. Open a browser and go to http://scroll-essential.local or use the Storage Options Setup Tool to configure administrator credentials and create storage volumes.

Can I remotely access my files on the NAS?

Yes, enable Cloud Access in the settings. You will need to register a Storage Options account and assign a device name. Then use the MyStorage app or web portal to access your files from anywhere.

What RAID levels does the Scroll Essential support?

It supports RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 (mirroring), and JBOD. RAID 1 provides data redundancy by mirroring one drive to the other.

How do I replace a faulty hard drive?

Power off the NAS, remove the drive tray (tool-free), replace the drive, and insert the tray back. Power on and go to Storage Manager to rebuild the RAID. The NAS will automatically sync data.

Can I use SSDs with the NAS?

Yes, both 3.5" HDDs and 2.5" SSDs are supported. For SSDs, you may need to use an adapter bracket (not included). SSDs improve performance especially for caching.

What backup options are available?

You can schedule backups to external USB drives, other NAS devices via rsync, or cloud services like Google Drive and Dropbox. Use the built-in Backup Manager app.

How do I reset the NAS to factory settings?

Locate the reset pinhole on the back. Insert a paperclip and hold for 10 seconds until the LED blinks. This will erase all settings and data. Use caution.

Is the NAS compatible with Windows and Mac?

Yes, it supports Windows (SMB/CIFS), macOS (AFP), and Linux (NFS). Use the file manager or mount the shared folders as network drives.

What is the maximum drive capacity supported?

Each drive bay supports up to 18 TB (tested with WD Red drives). Total raw capacity with two drives is up to 36 TB.

How do I update the firmware?

Go to System > Firmware Update in the web interface. The NAS checks for updates automatically. Click Install to update. Do not power off during update.

OVERVIEW

Scroll Essenal is a portable, touch-screen Android ^TM 2.3 tablet made especially for Internet browsing, social networking, games, superb quality video playback (with Full 1080p HD output) and an almost limitless number of other applicaons.

It comes with everything you'll need to get up and running, including major Android™ applicaons for e-book reading, social networking, news, radio, video, instant messaging and much more. Plus thousands of other apps are available across the internet for you to download.

BASIC OPERATION

The Scroll Essenal has ve physical buons. Most other control is performed via the touch screen.

5.1 – PHYSICAL BUTTONS & CONNECTIONS

Press and hold the ☐on unl the Scroll Essenal logo appears on screen. The device will boot into the Android™ 2.3 operang system. This will take approximately 1 minute.

To turn the tablet o, press and hold the ☐uon again. A "Power O" menu will appear on screen. Choose "OK" to complete shutdown or "Cancel" to resume use.

Scroll Essenal features a resisve touch screen. To use it, apply slight pressure to any area on the screen. Touch an icon to load the applicaon.

You can also "touch and drag" to move items or scroll through lists by pressing and holding, then sliding your nger.

TIP

You can also use a plasc stylus instead of your nger on the touch screen.

5.4 - UNLOCK THE SCREEN

Scroll Essenal operates in a similar manner to a touch-screen mobile phone. When it is rst powered on, the Android ^™ operang system will boot, then you will be presented with a locked screen.

To unlock the screen:

1. If the screen is currently blank (Scroll Essenal is powered on but in standby), press the ☐uon (short press, do not hold).
2. Press and keep pressure on the green padlock icon, and drag it to the opposite side of the screen.

To lock the screen:

1. Press the ☐ion (short press, do not hold).
2. The screen will go blank to conserve baery power.

Mute / un-mute:

- From the locked screen, you can also mute / un-mute sound by dragging the speaker icon across the screen.

TIP

Once the screen is locked, it will go to sleep aer a few seconds to prolong baery life.

5.5 - HOME SCREEN

The Home screen will look similar to the picture below. It is actually ve screens, each of which can have a dierent layout of icons. To switch between screens, simply slide your nger or stylus le or right across the screen. The status bar and main menu are always visible, no maer which Home screen you are currently viewing.

- The status bar displays system informaon, such as wireless connecvity, baery level and the system me. Touch and drag down the screen to expand the status bar for more detailed informaon.

- Touch the Search bar to quickly search the World Wide Web using Google.

- The Main menu gives quick access to the web browser, Applicaons menu, and Sengs menu.

- Press ☐ to display a context menu on the boom of the screen. From here you can add icons and shortcuts to the Home screen, manage applicaons, change the wallpaper, and more.

- Press 📋 at any me and from any applicaon to return directly to the Home screen.

The touch screen is pre-calibrated at the factory but occasionally it may be necessary to recalibrate to improve accuracy.

To calibrate the screen:

1. Go to Sengs → Touch Calibraon.

2. Touch the middle of each of the ve targets that appear in turn on screen. It is recommended to do this with a stylus or similar pointed object for more accurate calibraon.

5.7 - ADD A SHORTCUT TO THE HOME SCREEN

You can place shortcuts to your favourite applicaons on each of the ve Home pages.

To add a shortcut to an applicaon on the Home page:

1. Press ☐ to display the context menu, then touch "Add".
2. From the "Add to Home Screen" menu, choose "Shortcuts".

3. From the "Select Shortcut" menu, choose "Applicaons".

4. Select your favourite applicaon from the list. It will appear in the next available space on the Home page.

TIP

Alternatively, from the Applicaons menu, touch and hold an icon for a few seconds. The Home screen will reappear. Drag the icon to any available space on the Home screen then release, and the icon will remain on the Home screen for quick access.

5.8 – REMOVE A SHORTCUT FROM THE HOME SCREEN

To remove a shortcut:

1. Touch and hold the icon. The Main menu will change to a recycle bin icon.
2. Drag the icon over the recycle bin. Once it turns red, release the icon and the shortcut will be removed.

5.9 - DISPLAY ORIENTATION

Scroll Essenal features a built-in G-Sensor which monitors the tablet's current orientaon and automacally adjusts the display to match.

To re-orientate the display:

- Simply turn Scroll Essenal to portrait or landscape posion, and the display will rotate to match.

NOTE

Some applicaons will lock screen orientaon. Normal rotaon funconality will resume once the applicaon is closed.

Automac screen rotaon can be switched o, if you prefer to just use Scroll Essenal in portrait mode.

To switch o automac rotaon:

- Open the Sengs menu, choose "Display", and touch "Auto-rotate screen" to remove the ck from the checkbox.

CHARGE THE BATTERY

It is recommended to fully charge Scroll Essenal overnight before rst use. This will help prolong the lifeme of the built-in baery.

To charge the baery:

- Insert the mains charger plug into the 5V DC socket (located between the speaker and USB socket) on Scroll Essenal. Connect the mains adapter to a UK 3-pin electrical socket.

CAUTION

Do not use any mains adapter other than the one supplied. Using an incompatible adapter could damage the tablet and poses the potential risk of re.

• If Scroll Essenal is powered o, it will charge unl the baery is full.
- If Scroll Essenal is powered on, the baery charge status will be indicated on screen by the baery meter.

When Scroll Essenal is connected to a computer via USB cable, it will "trickle charge". The baery will charge via the USB socket, but at a much slower rate than via the DC 5V mains adapter.

SETTINGS MENU

The Sengs menu allows you to adjust Scroll Essenals' system conguraon.

To change sengs:

1. Touch the Sengs menu icon on the home screen. The Sengs menu will open.
2. Drag your nger / stylus up or down the screen to scroll through the list of available categories.
3. Touch a category tle to view its opons.

Some opons will have a simple checkbox, whereas others will have a list of further sengs to choose from. You should take the me to become familiar with the opons in these categories.

CONNECT TO A WIRELESS NETWORK

The vast majority of applicaons support some kind of networking / Internet funconality. Scroll Essenal must be connected to your broadband router's wireless network to enable this funconality.

Scroll Essenal features standard wireless B / G capabilities, meaning it can connect to any router which is compatible with the 802.11b/g/n standard. Check your router's documentaon to conrm compatibility.

NOTE You will need your router's wireless access password to connue with these instrucons.

To enable wireless networking and connect to your router:

1. Go to Sengs → Wireless & Networks → Wi-Fi Sengs
2. Touch the Wi-Fi opon to enable it (a green ck will appear in the checkbox when enabled).
3. A list of available wireless network names (SSID) will appear under "Wi-Fi Networks".
4. Locate your SSID on the list and touch to select it.
5. You will be asked to input the password. This is the same password you would use to connect a laptop to your wireless network.

TIP

If you do not know your wireless password, please refer to your router's instrucon manual, or contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

An icon will be displayed in the status bar to show wireless conncon status:

Once you are connected to a wireless network, you can select it on the list, to view conncon details (e.g. signal strength, link speed and IP address), and you can choose to disconnect from the network and / or remove the stored password.

NOTE

Some wireless networks have an additional wireless security level called MAC address Itering. It may be necessary to disable this to allow the Scroll Essenal access to the wireless network. For instrucons on how to do this, refer to your router's instrucon manual.

WEB BROWSER

Scroll Essenal has a built-in browser which can be used to browse the World Wide Web, in the same way you would use a browser on a desktop computer or laptop.

To use the browser:

1. Touch the browser icon on the home screen. The browser app will open.

Make sure you are connected to your wireless network before opening the browser.

1. By default, the browser will automatically load Google. Touch the search bar.
2. An on-screen keyboard will appear. You can use this to type in your search string. Touch "Go" on the keyboard to execute the search.

Further funconality:

• Use the address bar to go directly to a website if you know its address.
• Touch the Favourites icon to add the current page to your favourites list or select any previously stored favourite websites.
• Press the ☐ buon to view and select further opons and change sengs.
• Press the burn to return to a previous page.
• Press the button to return to the home screen.
  • The Google search bar is also available directly from the home screen.

APPLICATIONS

Scroll Essenal supports a wide variety of applicaons. A small selecon is pre-installed on the tablet and available from the applicaons menu, but many more can be downloaded from Android ^TM websites.

10.1 - APPLICATIONS MENU

Scroll Essenal features an applicaons menu which consists of a grid of icons, one for each installed applicaon.

To use the applicaons menu:

1. Touch the applicaons menu icon on the home screen. The applicaons menu will open.

1. Drag your nger up or down the screen to scroll through the list of applicaons.
2. Touch an icon to launch the applicaon.

10.3 - PRE-LOADED APPLICATIONS

Scroll Essenal has several applicaons which are pre-loaded onto the internal memory. You will need to install them before you can use them.

To install the preloaded applicaons:

1. From the applicaons menu, touch the Scroll Apps icon. "Easy Installer" will load and a list of preloaded apps will appear.
2. Check the box next to each applicaon you wish to install.
3. Touch the "Install selected apps" buon at the boom of the screen, then follow the onscreen instrucons.

10.4 - ADD MORE APPLICATIONS

There are thousands of applicaons available for Android ^TM from various websites. It is possible to download applicaon (.apk) les on a computer, then transfer them to Scroll Excel using the supplied USB cable. See secon "Connect To A Computer" (page 19) for more details. To install an applicaon from the .apk le, simply locate and select it in File Manager.

Slide ME

SlideMe is included in the preloaded applicaons list on Scroll Excel. Once installed, launch SlideMe from the applicaons menu to browse and directly download hundreds of available applicaons.

WILD TANGENT GAMES SERVICE

WildTangent provides a gaming service for Scroll Essenal where users can trial, rent or own top games, based on WildCoins. WildCoins are a digital currency which can be purchased in packs or as a subscripon. Users can also play for free in exchange for viewing an advert from a brand adverser.

The WildTangent Games applicaon is pre-loaded on Scroll Essenal. See secon "10.3 – Pre-Loaded Applicaons" (page 16) for instrucons on how to install.

To use WildTangent:

1. Open the WildTangent Games applicaon from the applicaons menu.
2. Sign into your account, or if you do not have one, select the "Create an account" opon. Follow the on-screen instrucons to create an account.
3. The main interface will launch and automacally show the latest games. Browse the featured games on this page, or touch the "Find Games" buon to search for a specific type of game.
4. Touch a game's icon to view details.

The "My Games" tab shows all games currently installed on Scroll Essenal. Touch a game's icon to launch it.

Touch and hold a game icon to open a sub menu with the following opons:

• Play to launch the game
  • Uninstall to remove the game from Scroll Essenal
• Stop Renng if you wish to disconnue renng (if applicable)

MEMORY EXPANSION WITH MICRO SD CARD

Scroll Essenal has built-in ash memory, which can be expanded using Micro SD cards. You can use any Micro SD or Micro SDHC card up to 32GB capacity.

The best way to use a Micro SD card is to treat it as media storage; transfer media les (videos, music and photos) from your computer to your Micro SD card in the usual manner, then insert it into Scroll Essenal as shown:

Scroll Essenal will automatically mount the Micro SD card for use. The Gallery, Music and Video applicaons can all read media les directly from Micro SD card. To eject the Micro SD card, push it in slightly until it clicks, then release pressure. It will pop out from the socket.

NOTE

For other downloaded applicaons you may need to point them to the Micro SD card to read your media les. Refer to the instrucons included with each applicaon for direcons on how to do this.

The Camera applicaon lets you take photographs and record video clips using the built-in 0.3MP camera.

- Launch the Camera applicaon from the applicaons menu.

CONNECT TO A COMPUTER

Scroll Essenal can be connected to a Windows computer for le transfer via USB cable.

To connect to a computer:

1. Using the supplied USB cable, plug the mini USB plug into Scroll Essenal's USB socket, and the full-size USB plug into your Windows computer's USB socket.

1. Windows may present you with a "Found New Hardware Wizard". Please click the "Cancel" opon.

2. On Scroll Essenal, open the status bar by dragging your nger / stylus down from the top of the screen.

3. Touch the "USB connected" opon, then choose "Turn on USB storage".

Scroll will appear as mass storage on your computer and will be assigned a drive leer within "My Computer". You can drag and drop les from your computer to Scroll just like you would with any other external storage device.

To disconnect from a computer:

1. Touch the "Turn o USB storage" buon to un-mount the ash memory.

2. Disconnect the USB cable.

NOTE

Failure to un-mount the ash memory could prevent Android ^TM applications from being able to access the memory, and cause erratic behaviour. Always un-mount before disconnecting the USB cable.

CONNECT TO A HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION

Scroll Essenal is a powerful portable media player, but it can also be connected to your big-screen HDTV for Full HD video playback.

NOTE

You will need a Mini HDMI to HDMI cable to connect to a HDTV.

To connect to your HDTV:

1. Using a Mini HDMI to HDMI cable, plug the Mini HDMI connector into Scroll Essenal's Mini HDMI socket, and the full size HDMI plug into your HDTV's HDMI socket.

1. Switch to the appropriate input on your HDTV. Refer to your TV's manual for instrucons on how to do this.
2. On Scroll Essenal, go to Sengs → Display → Output Sengs, and switch "Output Mode" to "HDMI".
3. Choose an appropriate video resolution and refresh rate. If you are unsure of this seng, either set it to "Auto Detect" or refer to your TV's manual for informaon on supported video modes.

Video playback will appear only on the HDTV, not Scroll Essenal's screen. However, you can sll control playback from the touch screen. Simply touch the screen and these controls will be displayed:
