Panasonic improves blood pressure assessment

Points of interest and information concerning blood pressure and high blood pressure

PANASONIC EW3036E2 - Points of interest and information concerning blood pressure and high blood pressure - 1

Dear customer, congratulation to the purchase of Panasonic blood pressure watch.

For more than a decade, Matsushita has been providing blood pressure measuring device to our customers in Europe. The product you have purchased has passed our strict quality control, and we hope that this can help you manage your daily blood pressure.

We wish you all the best for your health.

Thanks to modern medical technology measuring blood pressure has now become uncomplicated. The user-friendliness makes measuring a lot easier, but very often a mistake can occur when assessing the measured values. In the majority of cases it is not the whole blood pressure picture that is taken into account but only a single measurement. The result of this is that more than 70% of all hypertension sufferers are insufficiently treated or not treated at all (Source: World Health Organisation (WHO)).

Now Panasonic revolutionizes the treatment of high blood pressure.

PANASONIC EW3036E2 - Points of interest and information concerning blood pressure and high blood pressure - 2

Blood pressure is not a fixed parameter!

The blood pressure fluctuations of this example of a day profile show why a single value is not suitable for diagnosis and therapy.

For people with high blood pressure a fluctuation of up to 50mmHg within the run of a day can occur.

The treatment of high blood pressure is one of the most successful forms of treatment in modern medicine. This applies not only when preventing complications due to high blood pressure, but also with regard to treating damage following a stroke or heart attack.

Recent studies have proven beyond all doubt that:

  1. high blood pressure can be successfully lowered in patients of every age and
  2. blood pressure should be stabilized at a low level.

The findings of major recent studies have made it necessary to adjust the formerly acceptable limits (the World Health Organization (WHO), 1999). In other words, the traditional limit of 160/95 mmHg as the borderline between normal and high blood pressure has now been reduced. Consequently, the normal values have been "lowered" by WHO, the German Hypertension Society and the American Hypertension Committee.

Upper value (SYS.) 140 mmHg Lower value (DIA.) 90 mmHg

Blood pressure exceeding both or either of these limits is considered hypertension.

The values should be confirmed by repeated measurements, though.

A pathologically high blood pressure is now defined as follows:

Systolic value of 140mmHg or more and/or a diastolic value of 90mmHg or more provided that these values are repeatedly obtained under standard conditions, i.e. at rest (measured at three different times on two different days).

This definition applies regardless of age. What formerly constituted a borderline area with systolic values between 140 and 159mmHg and diastolic values between 90 and 94mmHg is no longer considered to be a "grey area", but is quite clearly classed as high blood pressure. This consequently means that medical treatment is required for blood pressure values in excess of 140/90mmHg .

PANASONIC EW3036E2 - Upper value (SYS.) 140 mmHg Lower value (DIA.) 90 mmHg - 1

Batteries

Panasonic alkaline batteries (LR03/AAA/Micro) can be used for approximately 400 measurements (approximately 4 months, 3 times a day), at an ambient temperature of 22^ at 170mmHg for a wrist circumference of 17~cm .

(The supplied batteries are included for trial purposes only. Accordingly, there is no guarantee regarding the length of their useful lives.)

  • Battery life may be shortened if the ambient temperature is low.
  • The number of measurements that can be taken with a set of batteries will be drastically reduced if batteries other than alkaline batteries are used. Use only alkaline batteries.
  • Please replace both batteries at the same time and ensure that they are of the same type and make.
  • Please remove the batteries from the device when not using it for extended periods of time as batteries can leak and damage the device.

  3. The device can be used by people with a wrist circumference of 12.5 - 22.0cm .

PANASONIC EW3036E2 - Obtaining accurate measurements - 4
Wrist centerline

It should be approx. 2 cm below the base of the wrist; your wrist should be relaxed and your palm facing up.

  1. Hold the cuff with your thumb as shown in the diagram and then fold back the hook and loop fastener and secure it.

(1) Hold the cuff down with your thumb.
(2) Firmly wrap and fasten using the hoop and loop fastener. A loosely applied pressure cuff will result in high blood readings. Pull up on the fastener, without twisting it, to remove the unit from your wrist. Do not remove the hook and loop fastener by twisting it off.

Be sure to peel it in an upward direction in alignment with the cuff.

Always take your blood pressure at the same time while sitting in the same position and using the same wrist.

It is recommended to check your blood pressure at least twice a day. It is best in the morning before breakfast and in the evening after work.

  • Relax and take a comfortable position on a chair for about 5 minutes before you take the measurement.
  • Avoid to do any heavy work or sport for approx. 1 hour before the measurement.
  • Avoid to eat, drink (coffee, alcohol) or smoke cigarette for approx. 1 hour before the measurement.

Always rest for four to five minutes before taking your blood pressure.

Taking measurements while sitting down

  1. Place your elbow on the table.
  2. Align the device with the level of your heart.

Saving and recalling data

PANASONIC EW3036E2 - Saving and recalling data - 1

Blood pressure values for both systolic and diastolic readings are determined and indicated via a three-color LED system as being within normal or hypertensive ranges based on definitions and classification of blood pressure levels by the World Health Organization (WHO), and International Society of Hypertension (ISH). Moreover, when blood pressure is in the high range, the reading displayed on screen flashes on and off to alert the user.

According to WHO/ISH guidelines, values consistently in excess of 140mmHg (Sys.) and/or 90mmHg (Dia.) are considered to constitute high blood pressure.

For your safety

Always follow your physician's instruction when taking medication.

Please consult your doctor as to the most appropriate time to measure your blood pressure if you are receiving medication.

People with cardiac pacemakers, cardiac arrhythmia, vascular constriction or liver disorders as well as diabetics should consult their doctor before measuring their blood pressure themselves, since different values may be measured in such cases. The same also applies during pregnancy.

The Diagnostec is no toy for children!

In case you measure your child's blood pressure, always consult your doctor since the data cannot be compared with the standard adult's data.

Always remove your watch or jewellery from your wrist before using your new Diagnostec. This will prevent damage to the inside of the cuff and reduce the risk of inaccurate measurement.

Do not switch on the Diagnostec until the cuff has been secured around your wrist. The cuff might get damaged by excess pressure built up, if the device is not secured to the wrist.

Please do not attempt to disassemble, repair or modify the device.

This may cause fire or cause the device to malfunction. It may also lead to injury.

Please do not fold the pressure cuff back against itself.

Always use the pressure cuff on your wrist and nowhere else.

  • Either of these actions may cause the device to malfunction.

Do not use excessive force on the device.

Do not drop the device.

Measurements may be impaired if the device is used close to televisions, microwave ovens, X-ray equipment or other devices with strong electrical fields.

Please measure your blood pressure at a sufficient distance from such devices or switch them off.

The cuff may lose some of its elasticity at temperatures below 0^ . If the device is exposed to such extreme temperatures, it is a good idea to leave it until it warms up to room temperature before taking the next measurement.

As a basic principle, the device should not be exposed to extreme conditions (cold, heat, humidity, dust).

Do not allow dust or other foreign objects to enter the device as this may cause it to malfunction.

Cleaning the device

  • Do not use anything other than a cloth with warm water and a little soapy to wipe the device.
  • Do not use thinners, benzene, or alcohol on the device as this may cause discoloration and cracks.
  • Cuff can not be washed.

Storage

  • Avoid exposing the device to high temperatures, high humidity and direct sunlight as this can cause the device to malfunction.

Long-term storage

  • Remove the batteries before storing the device for long periods of time. Failure to do so may result in the batteries leaking, which may cause the device to malfunction.
