Frequently Asked Questions - VSC-HDMI-SDI Black Box

How do I connect the VSC-HDMI-SDI converter?

Connect an HDMI source (e.g., camera, laptop) to the HDMI input port. Connect an SDI cable from the output BNC port to your SDI display or recorder. Power the unit via the Micro-USB port using a 5V adapter (not included) or a USB port on your device.

Why is there no video output?

Ensure the HDMI source is outputting a compatible resolution (480i/576i to 1080p). Check that the SDI cable is securely connected and terminated properly. Verify the power LED is lit; if not, try a different power source.

Does this converter support audio?

Yes, it passes through embedded audio from the HDMI source to the SDI output. Supported formats include PCM 2.0, Dolby Digital, and DTS up to 5.1 channels. No analog audio inputs or outputs are available.

What is the maximum SDI cable length?

With high-quality coaxial cable (e.g., Belden 1694A), you can achieve up to 100 meters at 1080p resolution. For lower resolutions or 3G-SDI, maximum length may be reduced.

Can I use this converter with a 4K source?

No, the VSC-HDMI-SDI only supports resolutions up to 1080p. It will not accept or pass 4K signals. Use a 4K-capable converter for higher resolutions.

Do I need to install any drivers?

No, the converter is plug-and-play. No software or drivers are required. However, ensure your HDMI source is set to a supported resolution.

How can I clean the converter?

Disconnect power and use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to wipe the exterior. Do not use any liquids, solvents, or abrasive cleaners. Avoid getting moisture into the ports.

What power adapter should I use?

The converter requires a 5V DC power supply with at least 500 mA. A standard USB phone charger (5V/1A) or a USB port on a computer will work. Use the included Micro-USB cable.

Does the converter support 3G-SDI?

Yes, it is compatible with 3G-SDI standards, allowing up to 1080p at 60 fps. Ensure your SDI devices also support 3G-SDI for full compatibility.

What do the LED indicators mean?

The green LED indicates power is connected. The blue LED lights up when a valid video signal is detected on the HDMI input and is being converted to SDI. If the blue LED is off, check your HDMI source and cable.

2. Overview

2.1 Introduction

The HDMI to 3G/HD/SD-SDI Converter converts HDMI to 3G/HD/SD SDI in real time. The conversion between SDI and HDMI is purely digital and guarantees no loss transformation for both audio and video. Plus, with up to 8 channels of audio support, 7.1 channel or 5.1 channel audio becomes available. The VSC-HDMI-SDI also provides two low-jitter SDI outputs for daisychain or multiple monitors. And, it can also be used in combination with VSC-SDI-HDMI to extend HDMI video over coax cable.

2.4 Hardware Description

Figures 2-1 and 2-2 show the right- and left-side panels of the HDMI to 3G/HD/SD-SDI Converter. Table 2-1 describes the components.

2.5 Application Diagram

3. DIP Switch

Use the 2-pin DIP switch to configure the user interface. You can access this switch from the bottom of the unit.

4. EDID Learning

1. Make sure that Pin #1 and Pin #2 of the DIP switch are both set to ON.
2. Connect the HDMI display to the HDMI port of TX.
3. Power on TX.
4. After LED turns to light, the EDID Learning procedure is completed.

CAUTION: DO NOT change the DIP switch after the EDID has been learned; otherwise, the built-in EDID Learning information will be lost and will need to be learned again.
