Frequently Asked Questions - IR 380 Techno Line

What is the measuring range of the IR 380 thermometer?
The IR 380 has a temperature range of -50°C to 380°C (-58°F to 716°F). It can measure surface temperatures of objects without contact.
How do I switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit?
Press and hold the MODE button for about 3 seconds until the unit indicator flashes, then press the UP or DOWN button to select °C or °F, and confirm by pressing MODE again or waiting for auto-save.
What does the laser pointer do?
The laser pointer helps you aim the thermometer at the exact spot you want to measure. It is a Class II laser, safe under normal use, but avoid pointing it into eyes.
How do I clean the thermometer?
Clean the housing and lens with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth with mild soap. Never use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in water.
Why does the thermometer show 'Err' or 'Lo/Hi'?
'Err' may appear if the measurement is outside the range or if there is a sensor issue. 'Lo' or 'Hi' indicate the target temperature is below or above the measuring range. Ensure the object is within -50°C to 380°C and the lens is clean.
How do I replace the batteries?
Slide the battery compartment cover (usually at the handle) open. Remove old batteries and insert two new AAA 1.5V batteries with correct polarity (+/-). Close the cover securely.
What is the distance to spot ratio and why is it important?
The distance to spot (D:S) ratio is 12:1. For example, at 12 inches from the target, the measured area is about 1 inch in diameter. For accurate readings, keep the device close to the object and ensure the target fills the spot.
Can I measure body temperature with this thermometer?
The IR 380 is designed for non-contact surface temperature measurement, not specifically for human body temperature. For medical use, choose a thermometer calibrated for body temperature. This device may show readings lower than actual body temperature due to emissivity differences.
How do I use the MAX/MIN function?
During measurement, press the MODE button repeatedly to cycle through current, MAX, and MIN readings. The display will show the highest and lowest temperatures measured since last reset or power-on.
Is the IR 380 covered by warranty?
Yes, the device comes with a standard manufacturer's warranty of 2 years from purchase date. Keep your receipt for warranty claims. The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, not damage due to misuse or normal wear.

Operating

Useful tips for measuring:

  • The measured object/surface should be bigger than the scanned spot size.
  • The spot size increases with the distance from the object/surface.
  • For best results, the distance between the surface and the device should be as small as possible.
  • DO NOT measure in steamy, dusty or smoky environments to avoid false readings.
  • Measurements may not be accurate for any transparent objects/ surfaces such as glass or objects/surfaces with high reflectivity such as stainless steel.
  • After a change of the ambient temperature allow the device to compensate before measuring.

Measuring temperatures:

  1. Press the trigger switch (3) to turn the device on.
  2. Point the device upright to the selected object/surface.
  3. Press the trigger switch (3) again to measure the temperature. The measured temperature is shown on the display.
