Frequently Asked Questions - RSM1016 Ferm

How to change the blade of the Ferm RSM1016 jigsaw?
Unplug the tool. Turn the tool-less clamping lever located on the blade guide, insert the T-shank blade until it stops, then release the lever. Check that the blade is securely held.
How to adjust the cutting speed?
Use the speed adjustment wheel (usually located on the handle). Turn it to increase or decrease the speed. Adapt the speed to the material: wood -> high speed, metal -> low speed.
What is orbital action and how to use it?
Orbital action makes the blade oscillate forward in addition to the vertical movement, which speeds up cutting in wood. Set the orbital selector to 0 (no orbit) for clean cuts in metal or plastic, and to 1-3 for wood (the higher the orbit, the faster but less clean the cut).
Can I cut metal with the Ferm RSM1016 jigsaw?
Yes, provided you use a blade suitable for metal, set the speed to a low position and disable the orbital action. The maximum cutting depth in steel is about 10 mm.
How to clean and maintain the jigsaw?
Unplug the tool before any maintenance. Clean the housing with a slightly damp dry cloth (no solvents). Remove the blade and clean the blade holder. Periodically lubricate the gears with special tool grease. Check the condition of the carbon brushes every 50 hours of use.
What safety precautions should I take?
Always wear safety goggles and a dust mask. Use a clamp or vise to hold the workpiece. Do not wear loose clothing. Ensure the power cord is in good condition. Unplug the tool before changing the blade or making adjustments.
The jigsaw does not start, what to do?
Check that the outlet is powered and the cord is not damaged. Make sure the safety lock (if any) is disengaged. If the problem persists, the carbon brushes may be worn: they are accessible and replaceable. Contact after-sales service.
Can I use the jigsaw without dust extraction?
Yes, the dust extraction nozzle is removable. You can work without it, but the built-in debris blower helps clear the cutting line. For a healthier environment, connect a vacuum cleaner to the nozzle.
How to tilt the sole plate for a bevel cut?
Loosen the sole plate fixing screws (usually two screws at the front). Tilt the sole plate to the desired angle (0° to 45°). Use the angle mark if present. Tighten the screws. Note: the cutting depth is reduced when bevel cutting.
What types of blades are compatible with the RSM1016 model?
The jigsaw accepts standard T-shank blades. Choose the blade according to the material: wood (large teeth), metal (fine teeth), plastic (medium teeth). Avoid U-shank blades which are not compatible.

Ferm RSM1016 - Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces, when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. - 1

Do not saw materials containing asbestos!!!

Wear protective goggles when working with • materials which produce large amounts of chips.

Wear a protective mask when sawing other • fibrous materials.

Remove adjusting keys and wrenches before turning the tool on.

Secure your workpiece with clamps.

Move machine towards the workpiece only • when switched on.

Always hold machine with both hands and ensure that you have a safe footing while working.

The machine may be operated only with the foot plate mounted. When sawing, the foot plate must always rest on the workpiece.

Incorrect handling may damage the machine.

Therefore always comply with the following instructions.

Use only sharp saw blades in perfect • condition; replace cracked, distorted or blunt saw blades immediately.

Machine should only be switched on with blade installed

Select tools, stroke rate and pendulum • actions according to material, Take care to maintain a constant reed rate.

Do not attempt to stop the saw blade with lateral pressure after switching off.

• Only use genuine accessories.

3. MOUNTING ACCESSORIES

Fitting a saw blade

The machine is equipped with a quick fit system.

Turn the clamping ring (2) of the saw blade • holder as far to the left as possible and hold it there.

  • Place the saw blade in the blade holder.
    • Let go of the clamping ring.
Make sure when changing the saw blade that the blade holder is free of material debris (such as splinters of wood or metal).
  • Before use, always check that the saw blade is securely fixed.

Removing the saw blade

  • Turn the clamping ring of the saw blade holder as far to the left as possible and hold it there.
  • Remove the saw blade from its holder.
    • Let go of the clamping ring.

Adjustment of the guide shoe

Fig. A

When the blade loses its sharpness at some sections of it's cutting edge, reposition the foot plate to use a sharp, unused portion of its cutting edge. Besides this, the foot plate can also be used for adjusting maximum saw depth, especially useful when sawing in hollow walls.

- The footplate can be extended by loosening the two footplate mounting screws (5) using the 4 mm hexagon key and then pulling the footplate out to the required length.

Ensure the footplate adjustment screws are secure before resuming work.

4. OPERATION

To switch on the machine, press the on/off switch (3).

To switch the machine to continuous mode, • keep the on/off switch (3) pressed and simultaneously press the lock-on button (4).

To switch off the machine, release the on/off switch (3).

Sawing tips

Adjust saw blade and stroke rate to suit the material to be processed. For right radius curves it is best to use a narrow saw blade. Apply coolant or lubricant to deal with the fluttering produced along the cut line when sawing metal.

Check wood, chip boards, building materials • etc, for foreign bodies (nails, screws etc.), before sawing and remove them, if necessary. Clamp material well. Do not support the • workpiece with hand or foot. Do not touch objects or the floor with the saw running (danger of backlash).

Put the footplate on the surface of the • workpiece, and saw through it with constant contact pressure or feed. If the saw blade seizes switch the machine off immediately. Spread the gap with a suitable tool and pull out the saw blade.

After finishing work, switch off the machine • and only put down after it has come to a complete standstill.

Plunge cutting

Fig. C

Plunge cutting may only be used on soft materials such as wood, aerated concrete, gypsum plaster boards, etc.

However, this requires a certain practise and is only possible with short saw blades.

Place the saw onto the workpiece and switch • it on.

Ensure that the bottom edge of the footplate • rests on the workpiece surface as shown.

  • Slowly saw into the workpiece at an angle, moving the saw to a vertical position and continue to saw along the cutting line.
  • Switch the saw off and lift off the workpiece

when the work is complete.

Flush sawing

  • Elastic bi-metal saw blades allow you to saw protruding objects (e,g, water pipes, iron bars, etc,) nearby the wall.
Apply the saw blade directly to the wall and • bend slightly so that the footplate rests against the wall.
  • Switch the machine on and saw off the workpiece keeping constant lateral pressure against the wall.

5. SERVICE & MAINTENANCE
