General safety precautions

  • Read carefully through the instructions and inform yourself about all controls and functions and how to correctly use the snow blower.
  • Never let children or others who do not have the adequate knowledge of these instructions use the snow blower. Local ordinances can have restrictions regarding the user's age.
  • Never use the machine in the vicinity of others, especially children or animals.
  • Remember the user/driver is always ultimately responsible for accidents caused by use of the product.

Safety precautions during use

• Make sure to keep hands and feet away from rotating parts. Avoid the discharge chute.
• Certain engine parts will become very hot during use. Risk for burn injuries.
- The snow blower cannot be used for any other purpose than for removing snow.
- Be careful when using on gravel paths, pavement and roads. Be attentive for possible hazards and nearby traffic. Avoid steep inclines.
- Never point the discharge chute towards public roads or traffic.
- Stop the engine immediately if you have struck a foreign object. Inspect the machine carefully after such an incident. Do not reuse the snow blower until any possible damage has been repaired.
- If the snow blower begins to vibrate abnormally, turn off the engine immediately and find the cause. Vibrations are normally a sign of problems.
• Existing safety features may not be disconnected or made inoperative.
- Never use the snow blower in the vicinity of fences, cars, windows, inclines, etc. without properly adjusting the discharge chute.
• Always keep children away from areas to be cleared of snow.

Installation

Upper and lower handle assemblies

  1. Unscrew the 4 large plastic nuts, washers and bolts from the lower handle.
  2. Raise the upper handle assembly and align it with the lower handle assembly.
  3. Screw together the assemblies.

Chute direction crank

The crank comes in two parts and is bolted together with the included sleeve.

  1. Thread the two ends into the sleeve.
  2. Align the ends' bolt holes with the ones in the sleeve and assemble.

  1. Securely fit the locking nuts into place but do not over tighten.

  1. Fasten the crank's support bracket into the upper handle assembly's left side by threading it into the hole. Tighten the nuts and washers.

Operation

Oil level checks and refills

Note: The snow blower comes without engine oil. Oil must be filled before using the snow blower. Engine oil capacity is 600 ml.

  • Use SAE 5W-30 grade 4-stroke petrol engine oil, service category SG, SF.
  • Unscrew the dipstick and fill up with engine oil so that the level is within the recommended mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill!
  • Do not screw the dipstick cap into place when measuring. Hold it flush against the filling hole to measure.

Note: The engine has a dummy plug that on other models is used for engine oil control and filling. On this model the plug does not have a function.

Pre-operational precautions

• Make sure that the area being cleared is free from loose and foreign objects.
• Make sure that the controls are easily manoeuvrable and that they return to their original position when released.
• Disengage all controls before starting the engine.
• Pre-plan the area to be cleared in order to avoid personal or property damage by flying objects.
- Never use the snow blower without proper clothing. Use appropriate footwear with solid traction especially in slippery conditions.
- Under no circumstances may maintenance and service be performed when the engine is on (if not otherwise directed by the instruction manual).
• Always you safety glasses or a visor when operating, servicing or carrying out maintenance.
• Always use an earthed extension lead approved for outdoor use when using the 230 V electric starter.
- Adjust the height of the impeller housing so that there is enough free clearance when driving over gravel surfaces, etc.
- Let the snow blower adjust to outdoor temperatures before using.

Refuelling precautions

Note: Petrol is highly flammable.

• Use only 95 or 98 octane unleaded petrol.
• Store the fuel in a container that is suitable for petrol.
• Always fill the container outdoors and do not smoke while filling.
- Do not overfill! The fuel level should not exceed the maximum fuel level indicator (see fig.).
- Fill with fuel before starting the engine. Never open the fuel cap for filling when the engine is running or when warm.
- Replace the fuel cap securely and wipe off any excess fuel.

Manual start

Note: Check the oil and fuel levels before starting. Make sure the drive control and feed screw are disengaged.

  1. Make sure the choke is set to cold start mode. If the engine is warm, set the choke to the opposite position.

  2. Press the primer about 3–5 times. Cover the vent hole in the centre of the primer bladder when pushing. In cold weather conditions the engine may need to be primed again. If the engine is warm, press the primer once.

  3. Slowly pull the starter handle until you feel some resistance. Use a quick and powerful motion when pulling the handle to start. Do not release the handle but keep it in position and then slowly return it to its original position.
  4. Once the engine has been started and is warm, slowly turn the choke control to its starting position.
  5. If the engine should stall, restart it with the choke set in the middle position for a short time. Once the engine is stable, slowly return the choke to its original position.

Electric start

  1. Connect the mains lead to a 230 V earthed wall socket.

  3. Depress the start button (20). Release it once the engine has started. The starter motor is equipped with an overload switch which will trigger if the starter motor becomes overheated. The starter motor must then be allowed to cool before attempting a restart.
  4. Once the engine has been started and is warm, slowly turn the choke control to its starting position.
  5. If the engine should stall, restart it with the choke set in the middle position for a short time. Once the engine is stable, slowly return the choke to its original position.
  6. Unplug the mains lead from the power point first and then from the snow blower.

Safety checks

Note:

Check that the feed screws are in proper order the first time you use the snow blower and also before every new season. There must be some amount of free play in drive control wire (6).

  1. Start the snow blower and squeeze the drive control handle. Let the feed screws run for about 10 sec. Repeat this procedure several times.
  2. Release the drive control and inspect the feed screws from the front. Make sure that the feed screws are completely still and show no tendency of rotating.
  3. If the feed screws are rotating or show a tendency to rotate while the control handle is disengaged, turn off the engine and adjust the wire tension.

Skid shoe adjustment

• Normal use: Adjust the skid shoes to about 12 to 1 cm below the shave blade.
• Hard packed snow: Adjust the skid shoes slightly higher (in order to lower the shave blade).
- Gravel or uneven surfaces: Adjust the skid shoes lower (in order to raise the shave blade).

Operation

  1. Plan the area of operation and where the snow is to be removed before starting.
  2. Start the engine and set the throttle to full.
  3. Let the engine warm up for a few minutes to reach full power before beginning snow removal.
  4. Set the shift lever to an appropriate gear for the existing conditions. Second gear in the drive position is meant for normal conditions appropriate for most snow removal situations.
  5. Use the switch to turn on the headlight when necessary (5).
  6. Squeeze the drive feed screw control (6) to begin snow removal.
  7. Squeeze the drive control handle (2) to start it into drive.

Note: Never move the shift lever while the snow blower is in motion and always release the drive handle when changing gears.

  1. Completing work: Let the engine idle a few minutes before stopping it. Let the snow blower and feed screw stand still in order to let most of the moisture and snow dry off.
  2. With the engine still running, pull the starter cable 3–4 times to prevent it from freezing in position.

A puttering noise will be heard. This is normal and it will in no way damage the machine or the starter motor.

Turning off the engine

  1. Pull the throttle back completely.
  2. Remove the ignition key.
  3. Carefully clean the entire snow machine and move the controls back and forth to prevent them freezing into position.

Care and maintenance

Note: Turn off the engine, remove the ignition key and remove the spark plug cable from the spark plug before servicing, cleaning or maintenance.

Lubrication

  • Regularly lubricate the shift lever and other moving parts with a few drops of motor oil and/or spray (e.g. 5–56, WD 40). Do not over-lubricate!
  • Use a type of universal grease suitable for cars and machinery on the screw end of the chute directional crank. Do not over-lubricate!

Servicing and lubricating the feed screw

  • The feed screw is equipped with shear pins (24) that are meant to shear if the feed screw strikes hard compacted ice or other foreign objects. The snow blower is supplied with extra shear pins so that they can be replaced when needed.
    Note: Never substitute the shear pins with ordinary bolts. This can seriously damage the snow blower if the feed screw becomes stuck and immovable.
  • Unscrew the shear pins once per season and spray inside the shaft with lubricant. Also lubricate the screw shafts' flange bearings (25).

Transmission, feed screw and clutch control adjustments

Testing and adjusting the transmission

Follow these procedures:

  1. With the engine off, move the shift lever to the highest gear (6th). Release the drive control lever. The blower should now be in neutral and freely moveable in both directions.
  2. Squeeze the drive control. The blower should now be unable to be moved forward.
  3. Release the drive control and the blower should be freely moveable again.
  4. Move the shift lever to one end (reverse 2nd gear) and then to the other (6th gear). You should feel no resistance in the lever and the blower should be freely movable regardless of which gear it is in.

Adjusting the shift lever wire

The shift lever has two wires, one for each direction. Make sure that all the gears work and that the shift lever can be easily moved to its end points (6th gear and reverse 2nd gear). Use the adjusting nut (26) and screw (27) on one of the wires to adjust when necessary. Releasing tension in one wire should cause the other one to become taut.

Feed screw

Adjusting the feed screw control wire:

  1. Pull up the dust boot (28) over the wire bracket (29).
  2. Pull up on the bottom wire to increase wire slack in the upper wire enabling you to remove the hook.
  3. Turn the bracket over and begin working the s-hook loose from the bracket.
  4. Pull the wire taut and insert the hook down a notch on the bracket.
  5. Start the engine, check performance and adjust if necessary.

Note: If the feed screws do not turn when engaged then the amount of free play in the wire is too great. Move the s-hook to a hole further down the bracket if needed.

Clutch

Adjusting the clutch wire:

  1. If the blower has a tendency to move backwards or forwards without having the clutch engaged, then the wire is too taut. Adjust the wire so that there is some free play in it using the same procedure used for adjusting the feed screw control wire described above.
  2. If the blower does not move backwards or forwards with the clutch engaged, then the wire is too loose. Tighten by moving the s-hook down a notch on the bracket as described above.
  3. Test the clutch and adjust accordingly.

Cleaning and other inspection areas

  • Use the cleaning tool (9) to remove snow or ice clogged in the chute or around the feed screw, when necessary. Never use your hands!
  • Inspect regularly to make sure that all bolts, nuts and screws are tight and that there is no visible damage.
  • The augur blades and skid shoes will become worn with time and should be replaced. Use only original parts or parts approved by the retailer.
    • Regularly check the fuel system for any visible signs of leakage at the tank, fuel cap or fuel lines.
  • Never attempt to tamper with or modify the product in any way.

Changing oil

Note: Check the oil level every time the snow blower is used.

  1. Empty the fuel tank when the engine is cold. Do the work outside and collect the fuel in an appropriate container. If the fuel is not to be reused, deposit it at the most appropriate recycling centre. The blower must be tipped backwards to remove all oil and there is a risk for fuel spillage if the tank is full.
  2. Place an appropriate container to collect the oil from the drain plug (23).
  3. Unscrew the plug, tip the blower backwards and empty of all oil.
  4. Screw the plug back on. Refill with oil as described in chapter Oil level checks and refills.

Spark plug

Note: Let the engine cool before unscrewing and removing the spark plug. Both the spark plug and muffler become very hot after use. Check the spark plug before every season. Change when necessary.

  1. Remove the cotter pin at the screw end of the chute control directional crank (refer to the image shown in Mounting the chute directional crank) and push the crank back for easier access.
  2. Remove the spark plug cable from the spark plug. Do not pull the cable but rather grip the spark plug cap and wiggle it back and forth to loosen it.
  3. Use a spark plug spanner to remove it from its socket.
  4. Check the electrodes for any visible damage and clean with a steel brush when necessary.
  5. Make sure that the electrode gap is between 0.6–0.8 mm. Special tools for gapping are available for purchase separately.
  6. Try to screw the spark plug partway in by hand to make sure the threads catch correctly. Tighten using a spark plug spanner.
  7. Washers on the new spark plug must be compressed during installation. Tighten a 12 turn extra after the spark plug is securely in place to compress the washer and create a proper seal.
  8. Turn a 14 turn extra if you are using the existing spark plug.

Handy hint: Thread a small piece of PVC hose over the spark plug tip to make it easier to insert and thread into the socket.

Replacing the shave blade

  • Unscrew the shave blade's (12) 3 screws and remove the blade.
  • Mount the new blade. Make sure that all the bolt heads are on top, inside the impeller housing (10).
    • Use only original parts or parts approved by the retailer.

Changing the skid shoes

  • Unscrew the skid shoes' (13) 2 screws and remove them.
  • Mount the new shoes. Make sure that all the bolt heads are on the inside of the impeller housing (10).
    • Use only original parts or parts approved by the retailer.

Long-term storage procedures (over a month)

  • Empty the fuel tank when the engine is cold. Do the work outside and collect the fuel in an appropriate container. If the fuel is not to be reused, deposit it at the most appropriate recycling centre.
    • Start the engine and let it run until it is out of fuel.
  • Store the snow blower in a well ventilated area, never inside and in a storage facility not subject to flames or sparks.

Disposal

When it is time to dispose of this product, do so in accordance with local regulations. If you are unsure how to proceed, contact your local authority.

The feed screw control wire is maladjusted or the drive belt needs changing.1. Turn off the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire. Clean the chute and the area around the feed screw.2. Replace the shear bolts with new ones.3. Adjust the wire according to the instructions listed under the Adjusting the feed screw control wire section above.
