Frequently Asked Questions - LPR110 Black Box

What is the maximum distance I can achieve with the LPR110?

With one repeater, you can extend up to 200 meters (656 feet). With two repeaters daisy-chained, the maximum distance is 300 meters (984 feet).

How many LPR110 units can I chain together?

We recommend a maximum of two units in series. Each repeater consumes about 2.5 watts, and chaining more than two may not provide enough power to the end device.

Does the LPR110 require a separate power supply?

No, the LPR110 is powered entirely by Power over Ethernet (PoE) from the upstream switch or injector. It complies with IEEE 802.3af and draws up to 12.95 watts as a Class 0 device.

What type of PoE switch or injector is compatible?

Any switch or injector that supports IEEE 802.3af PoE and provides at least 15.4 watts per port is compatible. The LPR110 will automatically negotiate power.

How do I install the LPR110?

Installation is plug-and-play. Connect the IN port to the incoming cable from the PoE source, and the OUT port to the next device (repeater, camera, or access point). No configuration is needed.

Why is my PoE device making a strange sound or not working?

This usually indicates insufficient power. Ensure the end device requires no more than 6.49 watts (Class 1 or 2). Also check that you have not exceeded the recommended maximum of two repeaters in the chain.

Does the LPR110 support VLANs or jumbo frames?

The LPR110 passes standard Ethernet frames and VLAN traffic transparently. However, it does not support jumbo frames or any frames larger than the standard Ethernet MTU.

Can I use CAT5e or CAT6 cable with the LPR110?

Yes, use 24 AWG CAT5, CAT5e, or CAT6 cable for best performance. The specified distances assume these cable types.

What should I do if I need to return the LPR110?

Contact Black Box Technical Support at 724-746-5500 to obtain a Return Authorization (RA) number. Package the unit carefully, preferably in the original container.

Are there any user-serviceable parts inside?

No, the LPR110 contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open or repair it. For any issues, contact Black Box support for assistance.

2. Overview

2.1 Introduction

Use the PoE Repeater to extend PoE connections beyond the Ethernet limit of 100 meters to access distant Class 2 PoE devices. Data and power both run over the same cable, so you don't need a separate power supply. The maximum distance using two repeaters is 300 meters (984 feet). The maximum distance with one repeater is 200 meters (656 feet).

Each repeater uses about 2.5 watts, so we don't recommend daisychaining more than two units. Two repeaters daisychained support a PoE PD end device up to 6.49 watts.

2.2 Typical Application

Figure 2-1 shows a sample application using two repeaters.

3. Installation

To install the repeater, simply plug in the Ethernet cable. Then follow these steps:

1. Connect the first repeater's RJ-45 connector that's labeled "IN" to the incoming line (from the PoE switch or injector).
2. Connect the next repeater or an IP camera or access point to the RJ-45 port that's labeled "OUT" on the first repeater.

NOTE: The repeaters require no special configuration. Operation is plug-and-play.

4. About PoE 802.3af

PoE 802.3af divides devices into classes. These classes refer to the power demand.

Table 4-1 shows which applications are possible with the LPR110.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 Problems/Solutions

Problem: The PoE device is not working but makes a strange sound.

Cause/Solution: Either the power demand from your PoE device is too high or you have too many LPR110 units installed.

Problem: The repeater only transmits switched data. VLAN traffic and other special Ethernet frames do not pass through the LPR110.

Cause/Solution: LPR110 does not support Jumbo frames or other frame sizes beyond the standard Ethernet limits.

5.2 Calling Black Box

If you determine that your PoE Repeater is malfunctioning, do not attempt to alter or repair the unit. It contains no user-serviceable parts. Contact Black Box Technical Support at 724-746-5500.

5.3 Shipping and Packaging

If you need to transport or ship your PoE Repeater:

• Package it carefully. We recommend that you use the original container.
• If you are returning the unit, make sure you include everything you received with it. Before you ship the PoE Repeater for return or repair, contact Black Box to get a Return Authorization (RA) number.
