Frequently Asked Questions - 002-423 Menuett

How do I use the slow cooker for the first time?
Remove all packaging and stickers. Wash the glass lid and ceramic pot with hot water and dish soap, rinse and dry. Place the base on a dry, level, heat-resistant surface. Put food in the pot, place pot in base, put lid on, select LOW or HIGH, and plug in. First use may produce a slight smell, which is normal.
Can I brown meat directly in the ceramic pot?
No, do not attempt to brown or precook food in the ceramic pot. Browning should be done separately in a pan before adding to the pot.
What is the maximum cooking time on LOW and HIGH?
On LOW, food can be cooked for 6–8 hours. On HIGH, 4–6 hours. The WARM setting can keep food warm for up to 4 hours.
Can I leave the slow cooker unattended?
Yes, it is designed for safe unattended use. However, always keep it on a stable surface away from children and ensure it is not near flammable materials. Unplug when not in use.
How do I clean the slow cooker?
Switch off, unplug, and let cool. The ceramic pot and glass lid can be washed in a dishwasher or with hot soapy water. For stubborn residue, soak overnight. Wipe the base with a damp cloth; never immerse the base in water.
Can I put the ceramic pot or glass lid in the oven or microwave?
No, do not place the ceramic pot or glass lid in an oven, freezer, microwave, or on a gas/electric stove. They are only for use in the slow cooker base.
Why does the outside of the pot look crackled?
Normal wear can cause the outside of the stoneware pot to appear crackled. This is a characteristic of the material and does not affect performance.
How do I prevent food from drying out or losing taste?
Use sufficient liquid (broth or sauce) to cover ingredients. Keep the lid on as much as possible to retain heat and moisture. Do not keep food on WARM for more than 4 hours.
Can I cook frozen food directly?
It is recommended to thaw frozen ingredients before slow cooking for even cooking and to avoid food safety issues. Never leave raw food at room temperature.
What should I do if the power cord is damaged?
Stop use immediately. The damaged cord must be replaced by an authorized service center or qualified person to ensure safe use. Do not attempt to repair yourself.

USE

BEFORE USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

NOTE:

The first time the cooker is used it may smell a little. This is completely normal and stops after using the cooker a few times.

  1. Remove all the packaging material and any stickers from the cooker.
  2. Wash the glass lid and ceramic pot with hot water and washing-up liquid, rinse well and allow to dry.

MODES

OFF

The cooker is switched off in the OFF position.

LOW

Recommended for food with low liquid content. The food can be cooked up to 6–8 hours.

HIGH

Recommended for food with high liquid content and for meat, beans and cereals. The food can be cooked up to 4–6 hours.

WARM

To keep warm in the cooker for simple serving. Food can be kept warm up to 4 hours. If food is kept warm for too long it can become dry and lose its taste.

USE

Starting/Stopping

WARNING!

The base is hot after use – risk of burn injury.

  1. Place the base on a dry, level, heat resistant surface, away from the edge. Do not put the cooker on the floor.
  2. Put the food and other ingredients in the ceramic pot and put the pot in the base. Put on the glass lid.

– Any precooking or browning must be done before putting the food in the pot.
- Do not attempt to precook or brown food in the pot.

  1. Check that the power switch is in the OFF position before plugging in the plug.

  2. Start the cooker by turning the knob to LOW or HIGH.

  3. When the food is cooked, switch off the cooker by turning the knob to OFF and leave the lid on. The ceramic pot keeps the food warm for 30 minutes. To keep it warm longer, turn the knob to WARM.

  4. Switch off the cooker by turning the knob to OFF and unplug the plug.

  5. Use pot-holders or oven gloves to lift out the pot. Always put the pot on a pot pad, or other heat resistant surface.

Cooking

NOTE:

  • Never leave raw food in the cooker at room temperature.
  • Do not attempt to warm cooked food in the cooker.

- Do not put the glass lid or ceramic pot in an oven, freezer or microwave oven, or on a gas or electric stove.

- Do not expose the glass lid to rapid fluctuations in temperature. A hot pot can crack if cold water is poured into it.

- Do not leave the pot standing in water for a long time. Water can be left in the pot to dissolve encrusted scraps of food.

- Do not start the cooker if the ceramic pot is empty, or if the ceramic pot is not on the base.

- Part of the pot is unenamelled. This unenamelled part is porous and absorbs liquid if the pot is immersed, which should be avoided.

- Stoneware burns at hot temperatures, which means that the pot can have minor irregularities so that the lid does not close properly.

- Normal wear can cause the outside of the pot to look crackled.

- Many factors affect the cooking time, such as water and fat content, the initial temperature of the food and the size of the pieces.

- The lid is not tight. Do not take of the lid unnecessarily to prevent releasing the heat. Increase the cooking time by 10 minutes every time the lid is taken off.

- Some ingredients are not suitable for slow cooking. Pasta, shellfish, milk and cream should be added towards the end of the cooking time.

- It is not recommended to cook large pieces of meat.

Preparing the food

NOTE:

- Small pieces cook more quickly.

  • For best results the pot should be at least half full.
  • Food can be prepared the night before and kept in closed containers in the fridge.
  • Cut root vegetables into small, even pieces – they need to cook longer than meat. Sauté pieces of root vegetables carefully for 2–3 minutes before slow cooking them.
  • Place pieces of root vegetables in the bottom of the pot and make sure all the ingredient are covered with liquid.
  • Cut off all surplus fat from meat before cooking – the fat cannot evaporate during slow cooking.
  • Meat and onions can be browned in a pan to contain the juices and reduce the fat content before being put in the ceramic pot. This produces more taste, but is not necessary if there is not enough time.
  • Root vegetables normally require longer cooking times than meat, which is why they should be put in the bottom of the pot. If possible place pieces of meat in the bottom 2/3rds of the pot, covered with liquid. Cut up larger pieces of meat.
  • Raw red beans must be soaked and cooked for at least 10 minutes before cooking them, to remove toxins.

Adding liquid

  • It can be appropriate to use less liquid than for conventional cooking. There is less evaporation during slow cooking than during conventional cooking.
  • All the food can be covered with liquid, broth or sauce. Prepare liquid, broth or sauce in an other utensil and pour into the pot to cover the food.
  • Slow cooking retains the liquid. To reduce the amount of liquid, take off the lid when the cooking is finished, turn the knob to HIGH (if LOW or WARM were used) and allow to simmer for 30–45 minutes.

- When cooking soup, do not fill the pot to more than 5 cm below the rim to leave space for simmering.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING!

Do not immerse the cooker in water or any other liquid.

NOTE:

Switch off the cooker, pull out the plug from the mains and allow the cooker to cool before cleaning it and/or putting it away.

  • Stoneware can be washed in a dishwasher, or with hot water and washing-up liquid. If necessary leave the pot filled with water and washing-up liquid overnight to dissolve encrusted scraps of food.
  • Clean the outside of the cooker with a damp cloth and wipe dry. Do not use abrasive detergents or implements, they can damage the surface.
