Frequently Asked Questions - RAD-010 Steren

What is the maximum range of the Steren RAD-010 radio?
Under optimum conditions, the range can be up to 30 km (18.6 miles). However, actual range depends on terrain, obstructions, and weather.
How long does the battery last on a full charge?
Battery life depends on usage. With typical use (transmitting 5% of the time), the battery can last up to 20 hours. Standby time is longer. The battery capacity is 1300 mAh.
How do I charge the radios?
Place the radio into the charger base. Connect the base to a power outlet. The LED indicator lights up during charging. First charge should be for 5 continuous hours. Thereafter, charge until full (LED turns green or off).
How do I select channels?
Turn the channel selection knob on top of the radio. There are 16 channels (1-16). Both radios must be on the same channel to communicate. The radio will announce the channel number.
Can I program the radio with custom frequencies?
Yes, the RAD-010 can be programmed via PC using the included software (CN-3188). You can set RX/TX frequencies, CTCSS/DCS tones, power level, and more. Install the driver and software as described in the manual.
What is the VOX function and how do I activate it?
VOX (voice-operated transmission) allows hands-free operation. It can be enabled via the programming software under the Edit menu, Function Setup submenu. Set the desired VOX sensitivity level.
How does the scanning function work?
Press and hold the SCAN button to scan for active transmissions on the available channels. The LED indicator turns green. The radio stops on a channel with activity. To stop scanning, press PTT or SCAN again.
Can I use other brands of walkie-talkies with the RAD-010?
Yes, as long as the other radios operate in the UHF 400-470 MHz band and are set to the same channel and CTCSS/DCS codes. The RAD-010 uses standard analog FM modulation.
How do I replace or remove the antenna?
To remove the antenna, unscrew it counterclockwise. To install, screw the antenna clockwise until it is tight. Do not overtighten. If the antenna is damaged, replace it with one of the same type (50 ohms impedance).
How do I clean and maintain the radio?
Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior. Avoid water, solvents, or abrasive cleaners. Remove the battery if storing for long periods. Check the antenna and battery contacts periodically for corrosion.
