Frequently Asked Questions - HG-2040 Coline

How do I fill the water tank?
Unplug the iron, slide the steam control to OFF, open the lid, tilt the iron to read the max level, and fill with tap water. Do not exceed the max mark. Close the lid until it clicks.
What does the automatic shut-off feature do?
The iron automatically shuts off if left upright for 8 minutes or horizontally on the soleplate for 20 seconds. It emits an audible signal and the indicator flashes. Moving the iron restarts heating.
How often should I use the self-cleaning function?
At least once a month, or more frequently in hard water areas. Fill the tank half-full, set temperature to max, wait for indicator off, hold over a basin and press the self-cleaning button for a few seconds.
Can I use distilled water?
Yes, if you have extremely hard water, distilled water is recommended. The iron has a permanent filter to reduce scale, but distilled water extends its life.
Why does the iron smoke or smell when first used?
This is normal for first-time use. Smoke or odour comes from manufacturing residues. Test on an old cotton cloth before use.
How do I switch between dry and steam ironing?
For dry ironing, slide the steam control to OFF. For steam ironing, set temperature, wait for indicator off, then slide steam control to desired position. Steam is produced when the iron is horizontal.
What is the spray button for?
The spray button (water spray) can be used anytime to dampen fabrics, independent of temperature or steam setting. It is useful for stubborn wrinkles.
How should I clean the soleplate?
After using the self-cleaning function, iron a piece of cotton fabric to remove residues. For external cleaning, wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
How should I store the iron after use?
Slide steam control to OFF, set temperature to OFF, unplug, empty water tank, and let it cool completely. Store upright on a stable surface.
What temperature setting should I use for different fabrics?
Follow the fabric care label. Low: synthetic (nylon, acrylic). Medium: wool, silk, polyester. High: cotton, linen. The iron has a dial with dot indicators: one dot for low, two for medium, three for high.

Before using the iron for the first time

The iron might smoke or emit unusual odours the first time it is used. This is completely normal and is only temporary. Test the iron for the first time on an old piece of cotton cloth to check that both the soleplate and the water tank are clean.

Operation

Refilling

CAUTION: Be careful when refilling the iron. It can be very hot after use.

  1. Unplug the iron from the wall socket.
  2. Push the steam control forward to the OFF position.
  3. Open the lid and tilt the iron so that the max level can be read correctly.
  4. Fill with regular tap water. The iron is equipped with a permanent filter that prevents scale build up.

N.B. In regions where extremely hard water is common, it is recommended that you use distilled water.

  1. Fill up to max level and close the lid properly until a "click" is heard.

Setting the temperature

Check the fabric care instructions on the piece of clothing and select a suitable temperature. The dots on the temperature control signify the following:

  • Synthetic material such as acrylic and nylon.
  • Wool, silk and synthetic fabrics such as polyester and rayon.
  • ● ● Fabric that tolerates high temperatures such as cotton and linen.

Ironing

CAUTION: The iron becomes extremely hot during use. Never leave the iron unattended when it is plugged into the wall socket.

  1. Plug the iron into an earthed wall socket. The indicator light on the handle should be lit.
  2. Set the desired temperature. The indicator light will be on while the iron comes up to operating temperature. When the light turns off, the iron has reached the desired operating temperature. If the temperature drops below the set temperature, the iron will begin reheating and the indicator light will relight.

Automatic shutdown

The iron will automatically shut off if:

• It stands upright for 8 minutes or
• It sits still on the soleplate for 20 seconds.

In these cases an audible signal is heard and the indicator lamp will begin to flash. As soon as you move the iron it will turn on and the soleplate will heat up again.

Warning: The automatic shut off feature protects the iron from overheating and helps reduce energy consumption. It will not prevent fires however, if for example you should leave a hot iron on the piece of clothing. Never leave the iron unattended while the flex is plugged into a wall socket.

Dry ironing

Slide the steam control forwards to OFF. Place the iron on the stand and wait until the indicator lamp turns off. N.B. Do not scratch the soleplate – do not slide it over metal items such as buttons.

Steam ironing

  1. Set the desired temperature.
  2. Wait until the iron reaches operating temperature and the indicator light has turned off.
  3. Slide the steam control into the desired position.
As soon as the iron is horizontal, it will produce steam and you can begin steam ironing.

N.B. If the iron starts dripping water the temperature is probably set too low or the steam control is set too high. Adjust either the temperature or the steam setting.

Steam spray feature

Coline HG-2040 - Steam spray feature - 1

The steam spray feature can be used for both dry ironing and steam ironing. The temperature must be set high. Using the steam spray feature helps you eliminate wrinkles effectively.

  1. Place the iron onto the piece of clothing.
  2. Press the steam button (max. 2 seconds) until the steam begins flowing through the holes of the soleplate.
  3. Let go of the steam button.

Water spray feature

Coline HG-2040 - Water spray feature - 1

The water spray feature is available whenever you want, independent of iron temperature or steam production. Place the iron so that the nozzle points in the desired direction and press the spray button.

After use

Warning: The iron is very hot directly after use.

Remember to let it cool off completely before storing it.

  1. Slide the steam control forwards to OFF.
  2. Set the temperature control to OFF.
  3. Unplug the iron from the wall socket.
  4. Open the lid and empty the water tank. Press the spray button a few times making sure it is completely empty.

Care and maintenance

Self-cleaning function

We recommend that you use the self-cleaning function at least once a month, possibly more depending on the quality of the water in your area. The self-cleaning function removes scale and dust particles from the water tank.

  1. Fill the water tank to half full.
  2. Set the temperature control on max temperature and wait until the indicator light turns off.
  3. Hold the iron over a basin and press the self-cleaning button for a few seconds. Water and steam should begin flowing from the soleplate.
  4. Carefully shake the iron back and forth to loosen scale and dirt from the water tank.
  5. Place the iron on the support stand and let it reheat.
  6. When the indicator light turns off, iron a test piece of cotton fabric. This cleans the soleplate from possible scale and dirt.

Cleaning the iron

N.B. Unplug the iron from the wall socket before cleaning.

When necessary, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaning solutions or solvents.
