How do I clean the coffee maker?

After unplugging and cooling, wash the carafe, filter holder, and filter in hot soapy water. Do not immerse the appliance. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth. The carafe is not dishwasher safe.

How do I descale the DCM400?

Fill the water reservoir with water and add 3 teaspoons of vinegar. Run a brewing cycle without coffee until empty. Repeat 2-3 times with fresh water to rinse. Use a commercial descaling agent if preferred.

Can I use the coffee maker without the water reservoir filter?

Yes, the water reservoir filter is optional for reducing hardness. It can be removed if needed, but using it helps improve taste and reduce scale buildup.

What type of coffee filter should I use?

Use a standard paper filter, typically size #4 or flat-bottom filters that fit the filter holder. Reusable filters are also compatible.

Why is coffee not dripping?

Check that the carafe is properly placed under the bowl. The anti-drip function stops flow if the carafe is removed. Also ensure the filter holder is correctly locked and not clogged.

Is the carafe microwave-safe?

No, the carafe is made of glass and is not intended for microwave use. It should only be used on the hotplate.

What does the anti-drip function do?

It allows you to remove the carafe during brewing to pour a cup without spilling. When the carafe is removed, a valve closes to stop dripping. Replace the carafe to continue.

How do I replace the water reservoir filter?

Remove the water reservoir by pulling it from the back. Open the lid and take out the old filter. Insert a new filter (compatible size) and reassemble.

Can I brew less than a full pot?

Yes, you can fill the water reservoir with the desired amount of water. The coffee maker will brew that amount. Ensure you use proportionally less coffee grounds.

What does the 'Earthed' safety mean?

The DCM400 is a Class 1 appliance, meaning it has a grounding wire to protect against electric shock. Always plug into a grounded outlet and do not use an ungrounded adapter.

Using your appliance

Assembly

Fitting and removing the water reservoir (fig. A & B)

◆ Place the water reservoir filter (10) in the water reservoir (7).
◆ Slide the water reservoir (7) in the back of the appliance until it is correctly fitted.
◆ Pull the water reservoir from the back to remove it.

Use

- Warning! Never use the appliance without water in the reservoir.

Before first use

• Wash the carafe, the filter holder and the filter in hot, soapy water.
  ◆ Rinse and dry all parts.

Filling the water reservoir (fig. A & B)

The water reservoir can also be filled while fitted to the appliance. The filter can be removed if required.

◆ Remove the water reservoir (7) from the appliance.
◆ Open the water reservoir lid.
◆ Fill the water reservoir (7) with the desired amount of water through the water reservoir filter (10).

Adding coffee

◆ Place the filter (9) in the filter holder (8). Add the desired amount of coffee.
- Open the lid (6) and place the filter holder in the bowl (5). Make sure the pins on the filter holder fit securely into the bayonet holes in the bowl.
◆ Place the carafe under the bowl.

Switching on and off

◆ To switch the appliance on, press the on/off button (1).
◆ To switch the appliance off, press the on/off button (1) again.

Anti-drip function

The appliance is fitted with an anti-drip function, allowing you to remove the carafe at any time, even when coffee is still dripping from the filter bowl.

Take the carafe (3) from the hotplate (2) and pour the desired amount of coffee.
◆ Replace the carafe on the hotplate and allow the remainder of the coffee to drip into the carafe.

Cleaning and maintenance

Warning! Before cleaning and maintenance, switch the appliance off and remove the plug from the socket.

◆ Using the handles, remove the filter (9) and the filter holder (8) from the bowl (5). Remove the used coffee grounds from the filter.
◆ Wash the carafe (3), the filter holder and the filter in hot, soapy water. Dry all parts and refit them.
◆ Wipe the outside of the appliance with a damp cloth.

Note: The carafe is not dishwasher proof.

Descaling the appliance

If the appliance is used in an area with hard water, it is advised to descale the appliance when from time to time.

◆ Use a commercial descaling agent for coffee makers, or use water and vinegar as follows:
◆ Fill the water reservoir (7) and add 3 teaspoons of vinegar. Operate the appliance as for making coffee until the reservoir is empty.
◆ Discard the used water and repeat the procedure 2 or 3 times with fresh water.

Protecting the environment

Separate collection. This product must not be disposed of with normal household waste.

Should you find one day that your Black & Decker product needs replacement, or if it is of no further use to you, do not dispose of it with household waste. Make this product available for separate collection.
