Thank you for purchasing a Tefal appliance. Please read the following instructions (common to all our models) carefully and keep them for future reference.

Safety instructions

This product has been designed for domestic use only. Any commercial use, inappropriate use or failure to comply with the instructions, the manufacturer accepts no responsibility and the guarantee will not apply.

• Only use your kettle for boiling drinking water.
• Only plug the appliance into an earthed mains socket, or into an electrical extension lead with an integrated earth connection. Check that the voltage indicated on the rating plate of the appliance corresponds to that of the mains voltage. You are advised not to use a multiple adapter plug.

- Do not use the kettle when you have wet hands or bare feet.

- Take care not to place the kettle and its base on a hot surface, such as a hot plate, or to use it near a naked flame.

- Immediately remove the mains plug if you notice that the kettle is not operating correctly.

- Do not pull on the power cord to remove the mains plug.

- Do not let the power cord hang over the edge of a table or work surface in order to prevent the appliance from falling.

- Always remain vigilant when the appliance is on, and in particular be careful of the steam coming out of the spout, which is very hot.

- Also be careful as the body of stainless steel kettles becomes very hot during operation. Only touch the handle of the kettle.

- Never touch the filter or the lid when the water is boiling

- Never move the kettle when it is in operation.

- Our guarantee does not cover kettles that do not work properly or do not work at all because they have not been descaled.

- Protect the appliance from damp and frost.

- If your appliance has been damaged, if it is not working properly or if the power cord or the plug is damaged, to avoid danger we recommend that you have the appliance inspected. Any intervention to the appliance other than cleaning and descaling according to the instructions for use must be performed by an authorised Tefal service centre.

- Unplug the appliance as soon as you have finished using it for a long period of time and when you clean it.

- All appliances are subject to strict quality control procedures. These include actual usage tests on randomly selected appliances, which would explain any traces of use.

- This appliance is not intended for use by people (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capacities are impaired, or by people with no experience or familiarity with such devices, unless they are supervised by a person who is responsible for their safety or have received instructions as to how to use the appliance.

• Children must be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.
• This appliance is intended to be used only in the household.

It is not intended to be used in the following applications, and the guarantee will not apply for:

• staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and other working environments;
• farm houses;
• by clients in hotels, motels and other residential type environments;
• bed and breakfast type environments.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

1 - Remove all packaging materials, self-adhesive labels and accessories from inside and outside of the tray, kettle and teapot.
2 - Place the tray on a cool, clean, flat, stable, heat-resistant surface, ensuring that the power cord runs along the rear of your work surface.
- Never place the tray on a hot or slippery surface or allow the power cord to hang over a heat source (e.g. a gas burner or electric hob plate).
- Do not use the tray other than with the supplied kettle and teapot.

3 - Check that your mains power supply the power and voltage ratings marked on the base of the appliance.

4 - Always plug the appliance into an earthed power socket.

5 - Connect the power cord to the tray.

6 - Always unplug the appliance when not in use.
7 - Clean the teapot as described in the "CARE AND CLEANING" section.

OPERATION

1 - Plug the heating tray into a power socket (Fig. 1).
2 - Press button A under the tray handle to switch on the hotplate. The 'On' light (C) lights up (Fig. 2).
3 - Operate the lid release catches and remove the teapot lid (E). Unhook and remove the brewing basket (G). (Fig. 3)
4 - Place the empty teapot on the hotplate (B) to pre-warm it (Fig. 4).

• The teapot is fragile. Handle with care.
• Never leave the empty teapot on the hotplate after use.
• Do not place anything other than the teapot on the hotplate.
• Do not place aluminium foil between the hotplate and the teapot.

5 - Place the tea in the teapot's brewing basket (G). Hook the brewing basket inside the lid. (Fig. 5)
6 - Fill the kettle with water up to the Minimum level mark (0.7 l) (Fig. 6).

• Never fill the kettle while it is standing on its base.
• Always use the kettle with its own scale filter.
• Never fill the kettle above the Maximum level mark, as boiling water could escape.
• Never use the kettle with no water in it.
• Use the kettle for boiling water only.

7 - On kettles equipped with a temperature selector (K), set the temperature as required: in the position for boiling water, or the position for water at a temperature allowing the tea to be drunk immediately (Fig. 7).

8 - Press the On/Off button (I) to switch on the kettle. The kettle will switch off automatically when the water begins to boil or reaches the preset temperature. (Fig. 8)

• To eliminate any dust, boil the kettle two or three times, discarding the water each time. Rinse the kettle and filter separately.
• Check that the kettle lid is properly closed.
• Never open the lid while the water is boiling or coming to the boil.

9 - Pour the hot water into the teapot and insert the lid and the brewing basket assembly (G) into the teapot, thereby wetting the tea and letting the leaves release their full flavour (Fig. 9).

10 - Brew to taste while supervising.

Models featuring a timer (L) require less supervision as an audible warning sounds at the end of the set brewing time.

• The timer informs you that the specified brewing time has elapsed, but does not switch off the appliance.
• Use button M to set the desired brewing time. Each press adds one minute to the set time. (Fig. 10)
• Release the button. The displayed time is set and the timer begins counting.
• If you make a mistake, or if you want to clear the timer, press and hold button M for more than a second while the display is flashing.
• Press button M once to stop the audible warning.

11 - When the tea has brewed to your taste, remove the brewing basket (G) from the teapot. Caution: the brewing basket may be hot.

Your tea is now ready to serve (Fig. 11).

12 - If you replace the teapot on the hotplate (B), your tea will be kept warm automatically (Fig. 12).

13 - You can switch off the hotplate function by returning the button (A) on the tray to the '0' position.

• Never place the kettle or teapot in a microwave oven (due to the presence of metal parts).
• Do not touch the hotplate.
• Always hold the kettle and teapot by the handle.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE ABC of Tea

Although all teas actually come from the same bush (camellia sinensis), their taste and type vary according to their region of production, method of processing (different fermenting, and drying processes and rolling techniques exist) and grade (whole or broken leaves, fannings and dust).

• Green tea: Rolled dried leaves, which are chopped and lightly roasted to prevent them from fermenting. Leave to brew for 3 minutes only. Green teas are subtle-flavoured, often bitter, and very pale in colour.
• Black tea: Made from older leaves that are rolled, dried and fermented for a considerable period. Brew for 5 minutes (or longer for Turkish or Russian tea). Gives a powerful taste and a superb coppery colour.
• Oolong tea: Midway between green and black tea. Slightly fermented. Brew for 7 minutes. Lighter in taste and paler than black colour.

Although purists drink tea plain, you may prefer to add cold milk to your cup before pouring in the tea (with Indian or Ceylon tea), or add sugar and then lemon (with green or flavoured teas).

MAKING RUSSIAN OR TURKISH TEA: While your tea concentrate is brewing, boil some more water; it is then ready to serve.

CARE AND CLEANING

- Always unplug the power cord from the power supply before cleaning.

- Allow to cool before cleaning the tray and kettle with a damp sponge.

- Never immerse the kettle or tray in water.

- Do not clean with a scouring pad

Cleaning the kettle filter

The removable filter consists of a mesh screen that traps particles of scale and prevents them from falling into your cup when you pour. If the water in your area is very hard the filter will very quickly become saturated (after 10 - 15 uses). It is therefore important to clean it regularly. To clean the filter while it is wet, run it under the tap; if it is dry, brush it gently. Sometimes, limescale may remain attached to the filter, in which case you should follow the descaling procedure described below.

Cleaning the teapot

Unhook the brewing basket (G) and wash the teapot like any ordinary glass container, either by hand or in a dishwasher.

Thoroughly rinse the brewing basket (G) and if necessary, brush it from the inside to prevent the stainless steel strainer from becoming clogged with tealeaf fragments.

The strainer is also dishwasher-safe..

Descaling

You should descale your kettle or teapot regularly (ideally at least once a month, or more often if your water is very hard).

Descaling procedure:

- Using store-bought white vinegar :

. Pour 500 ml vinegar into the kettle,

. Leave to act for 1 hour with the kettle cold.

- Using citric acid:

. Boil 500 ml water,

. Add 25 g citric acid and leave to act for 15 min.

- Using a special-purpose scale remover for plastic kettles: follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Empty your kettle or teapot and rinse five or six times. Repeat the procedure if necessary.

TROUBLESHOOTING

IF THE APPLIANCE IS NOT VISIBLY DAMAGED

- The kettle does not operate or switches off before the water boils:

- Check that the appliance is plugged-in correctly.

- The kettle has been operated with no water in it, or limescale has built up, triggering the boil-dry protection system. Allow the kettle to cool and then fill with water.

Switch on the kettle: it should begin operating again after approximately 15 minutes.

• The water tastes of plastic:

This problem generally only occurs when the kettle is new. You should discard the water from the first few uses. If the problem persists, fill the kettle to the Maximum level and add two teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate (baking powder). Boil and discard this solution. Rinse the kettle.

• The hotplate does not work:

Check that the switch located under the handle is set to the On position.

IF YOUR TEAPOT OR KETTLE HAS BEEN DROPPED, IF IT LEAKS OR IF THE POWER CORD, PLUG OR TRAY ARE VISIBLY DAMAGED

- Do not use the appliance. Never attempt to disassemble this appliance or its safety devices.

Return the product to a Tefal approved After-Sales Service Centre, who are the only agents authorised to repair it. Refer to the warranty conditions and the list of service centres in the leaflet supplied with the product.

The type and serial number are shown on the base of your appliance.

PREVENTING

DOMESTIC ACCIDENTS

Even minor burns and scalds can cause serious problems for children.

Teach your children from an early age to be wary of the hot liquids found in kitchens. Place this appliance and its power cord well to the rear of a work surface, out of children's reach and certain handicapped persons.

In case of accident, hold the burnt area under cold running water immediately, and call a doctor if necessary.

• To minimise the risk of accidents, never drink or carry hot drinks while holding a child or baby.
• Do not use the tray to carry the teapot or kettle while they are full of hot water or tea, as there is a risk of scalding.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Do your part to protect the environment!

Your appliance contains valuable materials which can be recovered or recycled.

Take it to a local civic waste collection point.
