Hedge trimmer safety warnings

Keep all body parts away from the blade. Do not remove the cut material or hold the cut material while the blades are in motion. The blades continue to move after the switch is turned off. A moment's inattention when operating a hedge trimmer can cause serious injury. Carry the hedge trimmer by holding the handle with the blade stopped and being careful not to use any power switch. Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will reduce the risk of unintentional triggering and resulting injury from the blades. When transporting or storing the hedge trimmer always fit the blade guard. Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will reduce the risk of injury from the blades. When removing blocked material or servicing the tool, make sure all power switches are turned off and the power cord is unplugged. Unexpected activation of the hedge trimmer when removing blocked material or servicing can cause serious injury. Hold the hedge trimmer only by the insulated handles, as the blade may come into contact with concealed electrical wires or its own power cord. Contact of the blades with a live wire can result in exposed metal parts of the hedge trimmer becoming energised and give the operator an electric shock. Keep wires and power cords away from the cutting area. Power cords or cables can be hidden in hedges or bushes and can be accidentally cut by the blade. Do not use hedge trimmers in poor weather conditions, especially if there is a risk of lightning. This avoids the risk of being struck by lightning.

Safety warnings for extended reach hedge trimmers

To reduce the risk of electrocution, never use extended reach hedge trimmers near electrical lines. Contact or use near power lines can cause serious injury or electric shock leading to death. Always use both hands when operating an extended reach hedge trimmer. Hold the extended reach hedge trimmer with both hands to avoid loss of control. Always wear head protection when operating extended reach overhead hedge trimmers. Falling debris can cause serious injury.

Warnings when working with the pole saw

When working with the pole saw, keep all parts of the body away from the chain. Make sure that the chain is not in contact with anything before starting the pole saw. A moment's distraction when working with a pole saw can lead to a cloth or a body part entangling in the pole saw chain.

Wear safety glasses and hearing protectors. It is also recommended to use head, hands, legs, and foot protections. Appropriate protective clothing reduces the risk of injury due to contact with waste or accidental contact with the chain.

Do not operate the pole saw when on a tree. Working with the pole saw while on a tree may result in injuries.

Always maintain a proper posture and work with the pole saw standing on a still, safe, and level surface. A slippery or unstable surface, e.g., a ladder, may lead to a loss of balance or control of the pole saw.

Exercise caution in terms of a kickback when cutting a tensioned branch. If the tension accumulated in the wood fibres is released, the branch may strike the operator or make him/her lose control of the pole saw.

Take special care when cutting shrubs and saplings. Slim material can catch the chain and push the pole saw towards the operator or unbalance him/her.

Handle the pole saw when turned off and away from the body. Always put on the chain guide bar guard when transporting or storing the pole saw. Correct holding of the pole saw reduces the likelihood of accidental contact with moving parts of the tool.

Observe the instructions for lubricating, tensioning the chain, and changing accessories. An improperly tensioned or lubricated chain can break and increase the chance of kickback towards the operator.

EN

Keep handles dry, clean, and free of grease and oil. The greasy or grease-coated handles are slippery and cause control loss of the pole saw.

Cut wood only. It is not allowed to use the pole saw for purposes other than it was intended. For example: do not cut plastic, concrete, or non-wooden construction materials. Using the pole saw for work other than that intended may result in dangerous situations.

When working, hold the pole saw by the insulated handles, as the chain may come into contact with a live wire, including its power cord in the case of mains-powered tools. When the chain is in contact with a live wire, this may cause the pole saw's metal parts to become live, leading to an electric shock to the operator. Keep the pole saw at a sufficient distance from power lines. Contact with a power line may lead to electric shock, serious injury, or death. Use personal protective equipment in the form of the head, eye, and hearing protections. It is also recommended to wear protective footwear and protective gloves. The use of appropriate personal protective equipment reduces the risk of injury that may occur during work.

Causes and prevention of kickback towards the operator.

A kickback towards the operator may occur when the guide bar's end is in contact with an object or the cut wood jams the pole saw in the kerf. In some cases, contact between the end of a guide bar and an object can cause a violent reaction driving the guide bar up and towards the operator. Jam in the guide bar upper edge kerf can suddenly point the guide bar towards the operator. These reactions can result in a loss of control of the pole saw, leading to serious injuries. Do not rely only on safety elements built into the pole saw. The pole saw operator should take some steps to prevent accidents and injuries during work. A kickback towards the operator is the result of improper use or incorrect operating procedures or conditions. This can be avoided by taking the appropriate precautions listed below: Keep a firm grip of both hands with thumbs and fingers closing around the pole saw handles. The position of the body and shoulders should allow withstanding forces arising during the kickback. If appropriate precautions are taken, the kickback forces can be controlled by the operator. Do not allow the pole saw to move freely. Use guide bar and chain replacements only as specified by the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement of the guide bar and chain may cause chain breakage or kickback. Observe the instructions given by the manufacturer regarding the chain sharpening and maintenance. Reducing the depth of the chain guide bar groove can lead to an increased probability of kickback. It is forbidden to expose the pole saw to precipitation and use it in an atmosphere of increased humidity. It is also forbidden to use the pole saw in an atmosphere with an increased risk of fire or explosion. Avoid contact with grounded, conductive, and non-insulated objects such as pipes, radiators, or refrigerators during operation. When not in use, store the tool in a dry and closed room inaccessible to unauthorised persons. Use the cutting chain adapted to the given load. Do not use cutting chains designed for light or heavy-duty work. Always wear protective gloves when replacing, repairing, and adjusting the cutting chain. Make sure that the pole saw has been disconnected from the power supply source during transport. In the case of the mains-powered pole saw, disconnect them from the socket, and for battery-powered pole saws – disconnect their batteries. A guard must be fitted on the cutting chain guide bar. Do not handle the mains-powered pole saw by its power cord. Do not disconnect the plug from the socket by pulling the power cord. Avoid accidental starting of the pole saw. When handling the pole saw connected to the mains or with the battery connected, keep your fingers away from the power switch. Always wear suitable protective clothing adhering to the body.

Operate the pole saw holding it with both hands. When working, secure loose pieces of wood so that they cannot move, for example, by placing them in a saw-horse. Avoid cutting wood that lays on the ground. Avoid processing wood that is not protected against movement during cutting. Do not hold the handles of the pole saw above your shoulders during the operation. Do not operate the pole saw while standing on the ladder. During work, adopt such a posture to eliminate the need to extend the hands to the full length. Keep the chain clean. The chain must be sharpened and lubricated. This will ensure more efficient and safer work. The chain can be sharpened in a specialised service centre. Check the condition of the chain before each use. In the event of cracks, broken teeth, or any other damage, replace the chain with a new one before starting work. In case of finding any damaged or broken pole saw parts, stop working or do not start working. It is essential to replace damaged parts before starting work. Use the pole saw as intended. The tool is designed only for cutting wood. When working, watch out for metal elements or stones that may be in the processed wood. Use original spare parts only. Failure to use original spare parts may increase the risk of failure and lead to injuries. The pole saw should be repaired only in service centres authorised by the manufacturer using original spare parts. This will minimise the risk of accidents and damage to the equipment.

PRODUCT OPERATION

Preparing the trimmer for use

Caution! Disconnect the tool from the power supply before performing any assembly and adjustment work. Remove the battery from the power tool socket!

Before first use, assemble both parts of the tool (II)

Ensure that the blades have been secured by slipping on the guard. Unscrew the head mounting locking device, then slide the part with the switch into the slot of the part with the head. If a component of the part with the head is correctly inserted in the slot of the part with the switch, this means that the connection between the two parts can be secured by turning the head mounting lock. Ensure that parts of the tool do not come apart during operation. Check the technical condition of the tool before connecting it to the power supply. If any damage is detected, it is forbidden to connect it to the power supply before rectifying the damage.

Adjustment

The tool length can be set by pulling back the length adjustment lock lever (VII), then adjusting the tool length and tightening the lock le-

EN

ver. Infinite adjustment of the tool length between the movement stops is possible. There is a clamp between the brackets that allows the attachment of an auxiliary carrying strap (VIII). It allows reducing the load on the hands holding the machine, especially during prolonged use. The strap latch must be passed through the opening on the top of the machine housing. The strap should be placed diagonally over the operator's body and its length adjusted so that the majority of the machine's weight rests on the belt.

Cutting head angle adjustment (III)

The cutting head of the tool can tilt in relation to the handle. This makes it easier, for example, to form the top of a hedge or to cut off branches in the case of pole saw. Changing the angle of the cutting head is possible by pressing both head angle adjustment buttons simultaneously, holding them down and then changing the angle. The head can be locked in several positions. Ensure that the head is locked in its new position and that the lock button has returned to its rest position.

Turning the rear handle (IV)

The rear handle has the ability to rotateright or left. To rotate the rear handle, press and hold the rear handle rotation button, rotate the handle to the right or left, release the button. By rotating the handle after releasing the angle adjustment button, it will lock into one of the positions marked on the housing. Ensure that the handle is locked in its new position and that the swivel button has returned to its rest position.

Preparing the workplace

Before starting work, the site should be properly prepared to minimise the risks associated with working with the tool. Make sure that only authorised persons are present at the workplace. Ensure good visibility from the workplace; that is why take special care when cutting working in difficult terrain conditions, e.g., on slopes. It is forbidden to start work during precipitation and in case of high air humidity, e.g., fog. Wear protective clothing and personal protective equipment. Avoid cutting wires, young trees, and wooden beams. Note that cut twigs and plant debris falling may bounce off other branches or become blocked between other branches. Prepare an escape route in case of danger from falling branches or plant debris. The escape route should also be free of obstructions while working. If obstructions appear in the escape path during the work, they must be removed before continuing. Due to the possibility of working on an overhang, make sure that the trimmer does not come into contact with power lines, telephone lines, etc. Cutting or snagging on such lines can cause electric shock.

Connecting the tool to the power supply (V)

Slide the battery into the power socket with the contacts facing inside the compartment and upwards until the battery latch engages. Make sure that the battery will not slide out on its own during operation. Disconnect the battery by pressing and holding the latch and then pulling the battery out of the seat.

Only the following 18V Li-Ion YATO batteries can be used to power the tool: YT-82842, YT-82843, YT-82844 and YT-82845, which can only be charged with YATO YT-82848 or YT-82849 chargers. It is forbidden to use other batteries with a different rated voltage and not matching the tool battery socket. It is forbidden to modify the socket or battery to make them match.

Starting the trimmer (VI)

Remove the guard from the shear blades. Grasp the trimmer with both hands by the front handle with one hand and the rear handle with the other. Ensure that the blades do not come into contact with any object or surface. Slide the electrical switch lock button on the top of the rear handle forward with your thumb. Press and hold the power switch in this position. The electrical switch lock button can be released. Wait until the motor has reached full speed and ensure that the blades are running smoothly before cutting. If you hear abnormal sounds or vibrations, turn the tool off immediately by releasing the power switch. The trimmer is turned off by releasing the power switch. Unplug the trimmer from mains and proceed with maintenance once the blade has stopped.

Working with the trimmer

Do not allow the device to operate at low speed or during start-up. The most effective work is if the cutting is done in full wide movements. For greater efficiency, the blades can be tilted at an angle of 5-10° in the cutting direction (XII). To achieve an even single hedge height, you can use string stretched along the cutting line. Cut the part of the hedge above the line. Vertical cutting of the hedge is possible. It is advisable to cut in a curved motion from bottom to top and then from top to bottom to use both sides of the blades (XIII). Useful tips when working Take care to ensure balance and correct posture when working. Exercise particular caution when working on a slippery, inclined, or uneven surface. Constantly keep an eye on the blades during operation. Do not mow in places which are out of sight.

Trimmer operation tips

Maintain balance and proper posture during work. Exercise particular caution when working on a slippery, inclined, or uneven surface. Constantly keep an eye on the blades during operation. Do not mow in places which are out of sight. Before starting work, inspect the workplace thoroughly, remove all loose branches and residues from the previous mowing. Special care should be taken when treating tall hedges. The other side of the hedge should also be checked before starting work. The trimmer gear cover heats up during operation. To avoid burns, avoid contact with the gearbox cover. Take regular breaks when working. During operation, the tool emits noise and vibration, which impact the tool's operator. Taking regular breaks and wearing personal protective equipment such as gloves, hearing protectors and eye protection allows to reduce the impact of the tool on the operator's well-being. Start work when healthy and in good shape. In case of nausea, headache, sight problems (e.g., reduced visual range), hearing problems, or dizziness, immediately stop operating the tool.

EN

If the trimmer jams during operation switch it off immediately using the on/off switch and disconnect the battery, wait until the shear components have cooled completely and then proceed to remove the cause of the jam. If, due to jamming, any part of the blades or cover is damaged or deformed, replace or repair it before resuming work.

Maintenance and storage of shears

Caution! Before starting any activities described below, disconnect the trimmer from mains. In the case of mains-powered tools, disconnect them from the socket, and for battery-powered tools - disconnect their batteries. After each use, inspect the condition of the tool with particular attention to the patency of ventilation openings. Check the placement of all of the tool's components. Tighten all loose screw connections, if any. Check the condition of the blades. Clean it with a brush and then preserve them with a spray lubricant. Excess lubricant should be wiped off. If you notice any damage or dulling of the blades, replace them at an authorised service centre. It is forbidden to use shears with damaged blades. Ensure that the blades are always lubricated. This will prevent the appearance of rust, which reduces the performance of the tool and can also increase the risk of injury. The clearance between the blades should be between 0.2 and 0.4 mm, measured at the point where the blades are bolted together. The blades are sharpened at the factory to achieve optimum performance, but become dull as a result of use. The condition of the blades should be assessed before starting any work. If rounding of the upper edge of the blades is discovered or if the roundness of the lower part of the blade disappears, the blades must be sharpened (XIV). The sharpening must be done at an authorised manufacturer service centre. Before storing the trimmer for an extended period of time, the blades should be sprayed with a preservative or spread over the blades with a brush. Excess preservative should not be removed until immediately before work. This maintenance will reduce the risk of the blades rusting. Clean the tool's housing with a soft and dry cloth. Clean the housing from residues of wood, oil, grease, and other contaminants. The tool should be stored in a dry, closed room, disconnected from the mains. Store the tool in shaded and dry places with appropriate ventilation preventing steam condensation. Such place should not be accessible to unauthorised persons, especially children. During storage, the guide bar and chain must always be secured with a guard.

Preparing the pole saw for work

Caution! Disconnect the pole saw from the power supply before performing any assembly and adjustment work. Remove the battery from the power tool socket!

Mount the guide bar and cutting chain before first use. Perform the assembly with protective gloves due to the risk of injury. Turn the side panel locking knob, in the direction indicated by the arrow bearing the open padlock symbol, until the panel is removed from the head of the pole saw (IX).

Mount the guide bar and chain as shown in picture (X). Make sure that the chain and guide bar are fitted in the correct direction. The shape and direction of the links visible on the chainsaw housing should correspond to the shape and direction of the chain. If there is a visible movement direction indication on the chain links, it should have the same direction as the indication on the housing and guide bar. Make sure the chain hits the guide slot and the teeth on the sprocket. The next step is to attach and tighten the side panel. To do this, insert the side panel catches into the pole saw head housing and then tighten the locking knob in the direction indicated by the arrow bearing the closed padlock symbol. However, do it so as not to block the possibility of the guide bar movement. Use the chain tension knob to adjust the chain tension. Tighten the locking knob. Check the chain tension. To do this, set the pole saw down and lift it by holding the middle part of the chain (XV). During this test, the chain at the holding point should rise above the guide bar within the range shown in the illustration. If the chain is tightened too tight or too loose, loosen the locking knob a little and reset the chain tension level. The chain tension level should also be checked every 10 minutes of operation. Secure the fitted guide bar with the chain by means of a cover and then connect the two parts of the pole saw. Unscrew the head mounting locking device, then slide the part with the switch into the slot of the part with the head. If a component of the part with the head is correctly inserted in the slot of the part with the switch, this means that the connection between the two parts can be secured by turning the head mounting lock. Ensure that the pole saw parts do not come apart during operation.

Before connecting the pole saw to the power supply, check the condition of the tool. If any damage is detected, it is forbidden to connect it to the power supply before rectifying the damage.

Oil topping-up

Caution! Disconnect the pole saw from the power supply before performing any assembly and adjustment work. In the case of mains-powered tools, disconnect them from the socket, and for battery-powered tools – disconnect their batteries. For lubricating the chain and pole saw mechanisms use only oil intended for such purposes. It is forbidden to use worn-out motor oil. It does not fulfil its purpose, which can lead to damage to the pole saw mechanism. Make sure that there is lubricating oil in the tank. Place the pole saw on the horizontal surface and check the oil indicator. The oil level cannot be lower than the minimum indication. If there is no such indicator, the lower edge of the oil level indicator should be taken as the reference level. It is forbidden to use the pole saw with the empty oil tank. This can damage the chain, guide bar, and mechanisms of the pole saw. It is recommended to start and operate the pole saw at least 3 meters from the place where the oil topping-up procedure was performed. Perform oil topping-up away from fire and heat sources. To top up the oil, unscrew the oil tank cap, pour the oil inside the tank so the oil level levels out with a mark indicating the maximum oil level or upper edge of the oil level indicator, then screw the tank cap firmly and securely. In case of spilling the oil, thoroughly wash off any debris before connecting the pole saw to the power supply.

Starting the pole saw (VI)

Remove the guard from the guide bar and chain. Grasp the pole saw with both hands – by the front handle with one hand and the back handle with the other. Make sure that the guide bar and chain do not come into contact with any object or surface. Slide the electrical switch

EN

lock button on the top of the rear handle forward with your thumb. Unplug the tool from mains and proceed with maintenance once the chain has stopped.

Working with the pole saw

Persons who intend to work with a pole saw for the first time should seek advice on work and safety from a qualified pole saw operator before starting work. During work, observe the basic occupational safety principles. Consider also the possibility of kickback in the operator's direction. The pole saw may kick back in the operator's direction when the cutting chain encounters resistance. To reduce this risk: Pay attention to the placement of the guide bar top when cutting. It is forbidden to cut with the upper quarter of the guide bar top (XVI). Cut only with the chain which moves along the bottom part of the guide bar. Only apply the started pole saw to the wood to be cut. Do not start the pole saw after having applied it to the wood being processed. Do not stand in the cutting plane. This will reduce the risk of injury in case of the pole saw kickback (XVII). During work, always hold the tool with both hands. Make sure that the chain is always sharp and appropriately tensioned. When cutting branches and boughs, do not start cutting them at the trunk, but at a distance of about 15 cm from the trunk. Make two cuts to a depth of 1/3 of the branch diameter, approximately 8 cm apart – One cut from below, one from above. Then cut the branch just at the trunk to a depth equal to 1/3 of the branch diameter. Finish the process by cutting the branch at the trunk from above. Do not cut the branches by cutting from the bottom (XVIII). If the pole saw gets stuck while cutting, never leave it in this position with the motor running. Turn off the tool's motor, unplug the tool from the power supply and use wedges to extract the pole saw from the jam. It is forbidden to use the pole saw to form hedges or shear bushes. Do not touch the ground with the cutting head, chain, or guide bar. Do not allow the tool to get contaminated with soil.

Maintenance and storage of the pole saw

Caution! Disconnect the tool from the power supply before starting any of the operations described below. Check the tension and condition of the chain. If any damage is observed, replace the chain with a new one. It is forbidden to use the tool with a damaged chain! A chain that is too loose can fall off the guide bar which may lead to injury to the operator. The chain must also be properly sharpened, because it requires appropriate experience and tools. It is recommended to carry out sharpening at specialised service centres. To up any oil shortages in the tank. Clean the tool's housing with a soft and dry cloth. Clean the housing from residues of wood, oil, grease, and other contaminants. The tool should be stored in a dry, closed room, disconnected from the mains. Caution! During storage of the tool, a small amount of oil may escape from the chain lubrication system, this is a normal symptom and does not affect the oil level in the tank and is not a sign of damage. Store the tool in shaded and dry places with appropriate ventilation preventing steam condensation. Such place should not be accessible to unauthorised persons, especially children. During storage, the guide bar and chain must always be secured with a guard.

Safety instructions for battery charging

Caution! Before starting charging, make sure that the power unit body, cable and plug are not cracked or damaged. It is forbidden to use a defective or damaged charging station and power unit! Use only the supplied charging station and power unit to charge the batteries. The use of another power unit may result in fire or damage to the tool. The battery should only be charged in a closed, dry room, protected against unauthorised access, especially by children. Do not use the charging station and power unit without the constant supervision of an adult! If you need to leave the room where the product is being charged, disconnect the charger from the mains by removing the power unit's plug from the mains socket. If smoke, suspicious odours, etc. are escaping from the charger, remove the charger plug from the mains socket immediately! The device is supplied with an uncharged battery and should therefore be charged according to the procedure described below with the included power unit and charging station before use. Li-ion (lithium-ion) batteries do not have the so-called “memory effect”, which means they can be recharged at any time. However, it is recommended to discharge the battery during normal operation and then charge it to full capacity. If, due to the nature of work, it is not possible to use the battery in such a manner every time, it should be done at least every several work cycles. Never discharge any batteries by short-circuiting the battery plates, as this will cause irreparable damage! In addition, do not check the battery charge status by short-circuiting the electrodes and checking their sparking.

Storing the battery

Ensure the proper storage conditions to extend the battery's life. The battery can withstand approximately 500 charge-discharge cycles. Store the battery at a temperature ranging from 0^ C to 30^ C at a relative air humidity of 50%. Charge the battery to approx. 70% of its total capacity to store it for a longer period of time. In case of prolonged storage, the battery should be periodically charged once a year. Do not over-discharge the battery as this will shorten its life and may cause irreparable damage. During storage, the battery will gradually discharge due to leakage. The self-discharge process depends on the storage temperature – the higher the temperature is, the faster the discharge process is. If the batteries are stored incorrectly, the electrolyte may leak. In case of leakage, secure the leak with a neutralising agent. In the case of electrolyte contact with eyes, rinse eyes thoroughly with water, and immediately seek medical attention. It is not allowed to use the tool with a damaged battery. If the battery is completely worn, return it to a specialist waste disposal centre.

Transporting the batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are treated as hazardous goods according to legal regulations. The user of the tool can transport the product

EN

together with the battery and the batteries alone by land. In that case, no additional conditions have to be met. If you entrust transport to third parties (e.g. a courier company), follow the regulations regarding the transport of hazardous goods. Before shipping, please contact a properly qualified person. It is not allowed to transport damaged batteries. For the duration of transport, remove the demountable batteries from the product and secure the exposed contacts, e.g. by covering them with insulation tape. Protect the batteries in the packaging in such a way that they do not move inside the packaging during transport. National regulations for the transport of hazardous materials must also be observed.

Charging the battery

Caution! Before charging, disconnect the charging station power unit from the mains by removing the plug from the mains socket. In addition, clean the battery and battery clamps of dirt and dust with a soft, dry cloth.

The battery has a built-in charge indicator. The LEDs will light up by pressing the button (XIX), the more of them come on, the more charged the battery is. If the LEDs do not light up when the button is pressed, the battery is discharged. Disconnect the battery from the tool. Slide the battery into the charger socket (XIX). Plug the charger into a mains socket. The red LED will light up, which indicates the charging process. When charging is complete, the red LED will turn off and the green LED will light up to indicate that the battery is fully charged. Pull the power unit plug out of the mains socket. Pull the battery out of the charging station by pressing the battery latch button. Caution! If the green LED lights up when the charger is connected to the mains, the battery is fully charged. In this case, the charger will not start the charging process.
