USER MANUAL GA 04 Palmer

ADIG-LB is the latest development of our legendary speaker simulator PDI-03, which has proven itself around the world in recording studios and is being used by such well-known artists as Keith Richards/ Rolling Stones, Alex Lifeson/Rush, Warren Curcurullo/Duran Duran or even Eddie van Halen and Def Leppard to name a few.

With the ADIG-LB (Advanced Direct Injection for Guitar/Load Box, trademark pending) we want to offer guitarists/recording engineers new sound possibilities which go far beyond the speaker/microphone combination. The device has a built-in load box (120 W continuous power with LED indicator) and is thus intended for direct connection to an amplifier, head or combo. With a filter section comprising two tone controls and a switch, a wide scope of sound manipulation can be achieved.

A volume control determines the output level of the filter section. Another "Full Range" volume control determines the volume of the unfiltered frequency band. This makes it possible to produce the sound directly in the console to create simulated guitars which is very popular when playing with a clean sound. Since both sounds are now miscible with each other, you can achieve completely new variants, which can otherwise only be accomplished via elaborate multi-channel recordings using several amplifiers. But the full-range controller can also be trimmed in the upper frequency range by means of a very steep filter. So, the combination of the two approaches opens up a plethora of different sounds. This represents a real alternative to the speaker signal recorded with a microphone, without possessing the latter's disadvantages, such as space-dependent sound, nuisance due to excessive noise levels in the room, crosstalk of the microphone signal, etc.

If you opt for "monitor sound" as the speaker sound in a live performance, ADIG-LB can be connected between the amplifier and the speaker like a normal DI box.

CONNECTIONS:

Connect the speaker output of the amplifier to the "Speaker Input" jack on the PGA04. Turn the amplifier to 8 ohms or use the appropriate output jack. A speaker cable with the corresponding cross sections (min. 0.75 mm²) should be used. If an additional box is to be connected (during live operation), the "Speaker Thru" socket is available for this purpose. The internal load box is then switched off; next set the impedance selector on the amplifier according to the resistance value of the box. The built-in load box can handle a maximum of 100 watts of continuous power. With an externally connected speaker, amplifiers of up to 200 watts can be connected. Please keep in mind that the built-in load box converts the amplifier power into heat. The unit should therefore be built into a 19" rack with enough space for adequate air circulation. The LED-chain on the front panel gives information about the power handling capacity of the load box. Never let the last red LED display segments illuminate continuously. In this event, there is an acute risk of overloading the unit. Since for an externally connected speaker, the internal load box is switched off, the LED indicator on the front has no function in this case.

For further processing of the signal (Recording, PA, effects) two unbalanced jack outputs and a balanced XLR jack are available. All outputs can be used in parallel. Only high quality shielded cables should be used for connection. In the studio, the XLR plug should preferably be connected to the microphone input of the mixer using a micro cable. This output is low impedance and also provides the cleanest signal over long cable lengths. A ground lift switch disconnects the input ground from the output, thus preventing possible ground loops.

CONTROLS AND SWITCHES

Set your guitar amplifier volume on the ADIG-LB to minimum (FILTER AND FULL RANGE) as you would normally do when using a box. To begin, adjust the amplifier volume so that when the first chords are played, the first two LEDs on the ADIG-LB light up (50 Watt amplifier; with a 100 W amplifier, the third LED can also be flashing).

With "Filter Volume" or "Full Range Volume", you can control the devices connected to the output of ADIG-LB. If you want to use the natural power amp distortion of your amp, you can continue to turn it up and then of course turn down the output level of the ADIG-LB accordingly.

VOICING

Anyone who has ever tried the different types of speakers and boxes side by side, will confirm that they greatly influence the guitar sound. When miking, the microphone type and placement play a crucial role. This fact is taken into account by the ADIG-LB via a comprehensive sound control. There are two potentiometers available in the filter channel. They can be used to influence both the lower and the upper end of the frequency band. With the "HIGH" control, the speaker sound can be continuously and seamlessly adjusted from soft "MELLOW" to aggressive "BRIGHT". Of course, without mentioning any other brands, the experienced musician will be familiar with the terms British/California as sound categories for speakers. The "LOW" control determines the box type, whereby the term "FLAT" stands for the thinned sound of open 2 x 10" speakers, while the other extreme "DEEP" represents the thrust of a stack with two closed 4 x 12". In between, lies a wide area to choose from. The "COLOUR" control defines the character of the speaker. "BROWN" is a slightly nasal and darker basic sound, while "LITE" gives a more open sound. The effect of the COLOUR control is also influenced by the position of the HIGH control. Those who prefer very aggressive sounds, should mix in the "FULL RANGE VOLUME" as well; it is then necessary to activate the "HI-CUT" control, otherwise you might get the infamous "paper cutter" sound. For extra clean sounds, however, it is recommended to mix in FULL RANGE without activating the HI-CUT. In this way, one can come close to the sound of an "acoustic" guitar. Since we know from many sound engineers that they have used the PDI-03 not only for guitars, but also for other instruments, we look to the mixing capabilities of ADIG-LB's Filter and Full Range sounds to create previously unimagined new possibilities for the creative sound artist. Since every guitar/amp combination has its own unique sound, we do not intend to come up with random example settings. Finding your own sound should always be the top priority for dedicated musicians and sound artists.

CAUTION!

In the built-in load box, halogen lamps are used as dynamic components. These begin to glow visibly at continuous high levels. This light can then be seen through the upper and lower cooling vents and also through

other openings. Do not be alarmed: your device does not contain any components that are about to "burn down". However, as already mentioned above, you should always make sure that sufficient airflow is provided for adequate heat dissipation. It should be pointed out that power tubes do wear out, depending on the delivered output power of the amplifier. Therefore, if you continuously operate your amp at high levels, you can expect an increased wear of the output tubes.
