Frequently Asked Questions - BD50MWSA BLACK & DECKER

Why won't my dehumidifier start?
Check that the plug is properly inserted, that the fuse or circuit breaker hasn't tripped, and that the bucket is correctly in place. The unit may also be in a 3-minute time delay after power-up.
The 'Bucket Full' indicator stays on even when the bucket is empty, what should I do?
Make sure the bucket is pushed in firmly and securely installed. If the problem persists, check that the float is not stuck.
How do I clean the air filter?
Remove the filter by pulling it outward. Wash it with warm soapy water, dry it thoroughly, then reinstall it. Press the FILTER button to reset the indicator.
How to install continuous drainage?
Remove the plastic cover from the rear drain outlet, insert the included drain hose, and direct it to a suitable drain. Ensure the hose is not kinked and that its end is lower than the outlet.
What does error code E1 mean?
Code E1 indicates a temperature sensor fault on the discharge pipe. Unplug the unit, wait, then plug back in. If the code reappears, contact Customer Service.
The dehumidifier runs but does not dry enough, what should I do?
Check that the humidity setting is low enough (35% RH), that doors and windows are closed, that the filter is not clogged, and that there are no obstacles in front of the air grilles. Let the unit run for at least 24 hours initially.
Frost appears on the coils, is this normal?
Yes, this can happen when the unit has just been turned on or if the ambient temperature is below 5 °C. Auto defrost will melt the frost typically within 60 minutes.
Can I use an extension cord with this dehumidifier?
Yes, but only a properly grounded extension cord of adequate gauge (at least 7.8 amps). Use a 3-wire cord with a grounding plug. Refer to the table in the manual to select the correct gauge based on length.
How to set the timer for auto shut-off?
Turn on the unit, then press the TIMER button. Use the + or - buttons to set the shut-off time (from 0.5 to 24 hours). The unit will automatically turn off after this delay.
What to do if the unit makes an abnormal noise?
A fan noise is normal. If a loud noise occurs when the pump activates (model with pump only), this is normal for 3 to 5 minutes. For any suspicious noise, check that the unit is on a level surface and that parts are securely fastened.

GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS

ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS

In the event of malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. The appliance must be connected to a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

DANGER - Improper connection of the equipment grounding conductor can result in a risk of electric shock. The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is the equipment grounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal. Check with a qualified electrician or service person if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if in doubt as to whether the appliance is properly grounded. Do not modify the plug connected to the appliance – if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

FOR GROUNDED, CORD-CONNECTED APPLIANCE RATED LESS THAN 15A AND INTENDED FOR USE ON A NOMINAL 120V SUPPLY CIRCUIT

The appliance is for use on a nominal 120V circuit and should be connected to a grounding outlet that looks like the one illustrated below. The use of a temporary adaptor is not recommended.

BLACK & DECKER BD50MWSA - ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS - 1

BLACK & DECKER BD50MWSA - ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS - 2

natural_image Two identical electrical socket icons with black terminals, no text or symbols present

POWER SUPPLY CORD

  1. Extreme care must be exercised with the use of an extension cord:

a) Use only a grounding type 3-wire extension cord that has a 3-blade grounding plug and a 3-slot receptacle that will accept the plug on the appliance.
b) The marked electrical rating of the cord set or extension cord must equal to or greater than the electrical rating of the appliance. The longer cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the counter top or table top where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over unintentionally.

NOTE: Neither BLACK+DECKER nor the dealer can accept any liability for damage to the product or personal injury resulting from failure to observe the electrical connection procedures.

SAFETY INFORMATION

USE OF EXTENSION CORDS WITH DEHUMIDIFIER

Only use a grounded extension cord that is rated at least 7.8 amps and has a third-wire ground. When a long extension cord is used to connect the dehumidifier, a voltage drop occurs. The longer the cord, the greater the voltage drop. This results in less voltage being supplied to the dehumidifier and increases the amount of current (amp) draw or reduces performance. A heavier cord with a larger wire size will reduce the voltage drop. Be sure to choose a cord that will supply enough voltage to operate the dehumidifier. The table below indicates appropriate gauge for extension cords.
