FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS

Every friendship bracelet starts the same away: cut pieces of thread of equal length. Grasp the threads and knot them together loosely at one end so that about 5 centimetres of thread sticks out. Then attach the threads that stick out to a table with a piece of sticky tape. This will stop the bracelet from slipping out of place as you knot it. Alternatively, you can stick a safety pin through the knot and attach the threads to a cushion or something like that.
And this is how you braid the Horse Club friendship bracelet
Choose a thread in your favourite colour, cut 12 pieces of it, each around 40 centimetres in length, and prepare them as described above.

Then arrange the threads so that 6 are on the right and 6 on the left.

Make sure that you always use the thread on the outside. This is a bit tricky at the start, but the threads arrange themselves after a while.
Closure
If your bracelet is long enough, divide the 12 threads into 3 equal sections, make an ordinary braid to the end and knot it. Then open the knot at the other end and make an ordinary braid here, too, so that your friendship bracelet has 2 identical ends. Cut off the threads that stick out so they are the same length.
The horseshoe is sewn on to finish
To make your bracelet a real Horse Club friendship bracelet, you finally sew one of the horseshoes in the middle of the bracelet. Ask an adult for a sewing needle and sewing thread. If you are not very skilled at sewing yet, get someone to help you.

If you enjoy braiding, you can try making more friendship bracelets. We will show you the 2 basic knots and 3 patterns on the following pages.
The basic knots
1. Backward knot

natural_image
Illustration of blood cells with purple and green/red blood cells (no text or labels)Take the pink thread and pass it from the right over the turquoise thread. Then, pass the thread around the turquoise one and pull it firmly up through the loop. Keep the turquoise thread taut.

text_image

Remember: Always tighten one loop before making the next loop, even if there are always two loops shown in the instructions. They are meant to remind you that a knot consists of two loops.
2. Forward knot
Pass the turquoise thread from the left over the red thread and pull it firmly up through the loop. Keep the red thread taut. Repeat this again and the forward knot is finished.

1. Pattern: Diagonal
The diagonal pattern only consists of forward knots. Cut four threads measuring 1 metre in length and knot them together loosely. Make sure that around 10 centimetres of thread sticks out. You will need this at the end for the closure. Arrange the colours into an order. Start on the far left with the pink thread A and tie the first knot with the turquoise thread B. Do the same with the other threads: place the pink thread over the top, make a loop, pull it up and tighten. When you've knotted the pink thread around all of the threads, it will be on the far right-hand side. The new thread for knotting will now be the turquoise thread on the far left. A new round begins... Knot your bracelet until it is the desired length. Place it around your wrist and check whether the length is right. By the way: you can use as many threads as you like for the diagonal pattern. The more threads you use, the wider the bracelet will be.

Cut two threads of each colour. Arrange the threads so that
the colours are opposite each other, e.g. one turquoise thread on the outside left and one on the right. The pattern looks like an arrow and is knotted from both sides at the same time until the threads reach the middle. Then you connect the two threads of the same colour with a knot. In the next step, begin once again with the two threads that are now at the outsides.

For this pattern, cut four pieces measuring 1.15 metres each from the coloured thread that will run through the bracelet like a wave (it is the pink thread here in the instructions), and four pieces measuring 1 metre each from the other thread. Knot the threads as shown in the diagram. Start with the pink thread on the inside and knot it around the turquoise thread. Before you knot the outermost thread, thread on one of the beads. Threading is even easier with a sewing needle.
