Frequently Asked Questions - OptiPlex SX270 DELL

How to replace the system board on the Dell OptiPlex SX270?
Follow the steps in the manual: turn off the computer, disconnect all cables, remove the cover and components in order (modular peripheral, hard drive, cover, fan shroud, heat sink, intrusion switch), then remove the system board screws and replace it. Be sure to discharge static electricity by touching an unpainted metal surface before handling components.
What type of RAM does the Dell OptiPlex SX270 use?
It uses DDR SDRAM (184-pin) at 266 MHz or 333 MHz, with a maximum capacity of 2 GB (two slots).
How to reset the chassis intrusion detector?
After replacing the cover, restart the computer and enter the BIOS (usually by pressing F2 on startup). In the Chassis Intrusion menu, select Enabled or Enabled-Silent to reset.
What is the maximum processor supported by the OptiPlex SX270?
The maximum processor is an Intel Pentium 4 running at 2.8 GHz (socket 478 with 533 MHz front-side bus).
How to clean the inside of my Dell OptiPlex SX270?
Turn off and unplug the computer. Use a soft, dry cloth for exterior cleaning. For the interior, use compressed air to dust the fans, heat sink, and vents. Avoid using liquids or chemicals.
What peripherals can I connect to the ports on the OptiPlex SX270?
It has ports for PS/2 mouse/keyboard, USB 2.0 (front and rear), one serial port, one parallel port, one VGA port, one 10/100 Ethernet port, audio jacks (line-in, line-out, microphone).
My OptiPlex SX270 won't power on, what should I do?
Check the power cable and electrical outlet. Make sure the power switch is in the I position. If the problem persists, open the case and check internal connections (system board, power supply). A faulty power supply may be the cause.
What is the hard drive size compatible with the OptiPlex SX270?
The hard drive must be 3.5-inch IDE (parallel ATA). Common capacities ranged from 20 GB to 80 GB. It is possible to install a hard drive with an adapter, but SATA models are not native.
Is it possible to add a dedicated graphics card to the OptiPlex SX270?
Yes, it has a standard PCI slot (no AGP slot). You can install a PCI graphics card, but its performance will be limited. The integrated graphics (Intel Extreme Graphics) is used by default.
How to update the BIOS on the OptiPlex SX270?
Download the latest BIOS version from support.dell.com for the OptiPlex SX270 model. Create a bootable floppy disk or USB key with the update file. Restart the computer with the media and follow the on-screen instructions. Do not power off during the update.
