Frequently Asked Questions - 71212 WestBend

What power supply does the WestBend 71212 toaster require?
The toaster operates on a 120 V AC mains socket only. It has a polarized plug (one wider blade) for added safety.
How to use the Defrost function?
Place frozen foods into the slots, lower the lever, then press the Defrost button. The indicator lights up. The cycle adjusts the toasting time to defrost and toast in one step.
Can you toast bagels with this toaster?
Yes, use the Bagel function: lower the lever, then press the Bagel button. The inner elements turn off to toast only the cut side of the bagel facing outward.
How to clean the crumb tray?
Unplug the appliance and let it cool. Slide out the crumb tray located under the toaster, empty it and wipe it with a damp cloth. Replace it before next use to avoid any fire risk.
What safety precautions should be followed?
Read all instructions. Do not leave the appliance unattended, do not immerse it, use it away from flammable materials, and do not attempt to dislodge food when plugged in.
What to do if the lever does not lock?
Ensure the toaster is plugged into a working mains socket. The lever only locks when the appliance is powered. If the problem persists, contact customer service.
Can I use an extension cord?
Using an extension cord is not recommended. If necessary, choose an extension cord with a power rating at least equal to that of the appliance and arrange it to avoid tripping hazards.
How to get spare parts?
Order parts on the website www.focuselectrics.com or contact customer service at (866) 290-1851. Have the model number (71212) ready.
Why is there smoke and odor during first use?
This is normal. The smoke and odor come from the burning of residual manufacturing oils. Let the toaster run empty once on the darkest setting to eliminate them before first use.
Can I toast buttered or glazed foods?
No, this is dangerous. Melted butter or glazes can drip and cause a fire. Toast only dry, untopped foods.

USING YOUR TOASTER

Before using for the first time, wipe outside of toaster with a damp soapy cloth, and then dry thoroughly. Operate the toaster the first time without any food in the toaster slots and with the browning setting set to darkest setting (dial turned clockwise to the furthest point). This will eliminate any residual manufacturing oils.

text_image defrost bagel toast/ cancel
  1. Place toaster on a dry, level, heat-resistant surface, away from any edge or flammable materials. Plug cord into 120 volt AC outlet only.
  2. Place up to two slices of bread, bagels, English muffins, pastry slices (1 piece in each slot), etc., into bread slots. Select toast color setting. The darkness control is identified by small dots on the extreme left (lightest color), then increasing in size to the largest dot on the far right (darkest color).
  3. Press the toast lever down until it locks into place. Toasting cycle will automatically begin. Toaster must be plugged in for toast lever to lock in place. Toast will pop up and toaster will turn off when the selected color is reached. The toast cycle can be stopped any time by pressing the cancel button. Note: Do not attempt to dislodge food when toaster is plugged in.

  4. Unplug the cord from wall outlet when not in use and allow to cool before cleaning.

Bagel Setting: The bagel setting automatically turns off the inside toasting elements. The cut-side of bagel will be toasted when placed toward the outside of the toaster. To use, press toast lever down and press the bagel button. The bagel and toast/cancel indicator lights will both illuminate when activated.

Defrost Setting: The defrost setting will take the bread/frozen pastry from frozen to toasted in one step. To use, press toast lever down and press the defrost button. The defrost and toast/cancel indicator lights will both illuminate when activated.

Note: The above settings can only be activated after the toast lever is pushed down and locked. If you are defrosting a frozen bagel, all three settings will be activated and all three lights will illuminate.

  • Some smoke and/or odor may occur upon first heating due to the release of manufacturing oils – this is normal
  • Some expansion/contraction sounds may occur during heating and cooling – this is normal.

CLEANING YOUR TOASTER

  1. Unplug toaster from outlet and allow to cool before cleaning. Slide crumb tray out from under toaster, empty and wipe clean with damp cloth if necessary. Replace the crumb tray. Note: Failure to clean crumb tray regularly may result in fire hazard. As a safeguard, be sure to re-insert the crumb tray to prevent crumbs from falling onto countertop to avoid any other potential fire risks.
  2. Wipe the outside surfaces of toaster with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. Do not use any metal or abrasive scouring pads or cleansers on any toaster surfaces. To clean the inside of toaster, turn toaster upside down over sink and shake crumbs free.
  3. Wrap cord around clips on underside of toaster for storage if desired.
