Frequently Asked Questions - OB5015 IFM

How to connect the fiber optics to the OB5015 amplifier?
Unscrew screw A, slide the fiber optics into openings B until you feel a slight resistance (O-ring), then push them to the stop (optical elements). Tighten screw A. Do not force to avoid reducing the range.
How to perform automatic switching threshold adjustment?
Pass the objects through the beam. Press T1 until the LED ramp flashes. Press once, then a second time. The green LED lights up to indicate operating mode. If the ramp flashes after step 3, adjustment was not possible.
How to manually adjust the switching threshold?
Press T1+T2 until the LED ramp flashes. The green LED flashes. Place the object then remove it from the beam. Use the + and - buttons to position the threshold in the middle between object and background signal. Press T1+T2 to confirm.
How to adjust the pulse extension?
Press T2 until the yellow and green LEDs flash alternately. Use + or - to set the delay (1 press = 1 ms). Wait 10 seconds to confirm. The green LED lights up in operating mode.
What do the different LEDs on the amplifier mean?
Green LEDs: in operation, indicate reserve capacity; in programming, signal intensity. Red LED: unsafe reception (poor adjustment or dirt). Yellow LED: switching state. Steady green LED: device available.
What to do if the red LED is permanently on?
This indicates unsafe reception. Check the threshold adjustment and the condition of the fiber optics (dirt). Clean or reposition the fibers if necessary. Perform a new automatic adjustment.
What is the supply voltage of the OB5015?
The device operates on direct current (DC). The wires are: BN (brown) = +, BU (blue) = -, BK (black) = output, VT (violet) = diagnostic output. The typical voltage is 10 to 30 V DC.
How to mount the amplifier on a DIN rail?
The device clips directly onto a standard profile (DIN rail). An optional mounting device can also be used. Ensure the amplifier is securely fastened.
What types of fiber optics are compatible?
Only IFM fiber optics type FE-11 (through-beam) and FT-11 (direct reflection) are compatible. Do not use other models.
Is the diagnostic output protected against short circuits?
Yes, in case of a short circuit on the switching output, the LED ramp flashes quickly and the diagnostic output is activated. It deactivates about 4 seconds after the fault is cleared.

The switching amplifier senses objects and materials without contact and indicates their presence by a switching signal.

  • Only for the connection of the ifm fibre optics type FE-11 and FT-11.
  • Sensing range depends on the fibre optic.
  • Pulse stretching 0 or adjustable between 2 and 90ms.

(Each input pulse is stretched to the set value).

Mounting

Mount the unit on a DIN rail or by means of a mounting fixture.

Mount the fibre optics:

  1. Loosen the screw A, fig. 1.
  2. Place the fibre optics into the sensor holes B until you feel a slight resistance (O ring), fig. 2.
  3. Push the fibre optics until they come to a stop (optical elements) and hold them, fig. 3.
  4. Tighten the screw A.

If the fibre optics are not in contact with the optical elements, the sensing range is reduced.

Electrical connection

IFM OB5015 - Electrical connection - 1

Isolate the power, then connect the unit as specified (see the last page or the type label).

  • Core colours (for sensors with cable connection): BN = brown, BU = blue, BK = black, VT = violet.
  • Programming of the output function by wiring (see the last page or the type label).
  • Load of the function check output (fc-output): max. 10mA.

Automatic setting of the switching threshold (1)

  • Objects move through the detection area
  • Diffuse reflection fibre (FT ...) and through-beam fibre (FE ...)

The unit detects input signals of various intensity in any sequence and calculates the optimum switching threshold.

Operation

Only open the cover to make adjustments. Close it after the adjustment has been made in order to maintain the protection IP65.

Check whether the unit functions properly. Indication by LEDs and by the function check output:

  • Red LED lights: wrong sensing of the object (maladjustment, soiling of the lens).
  • Row of LEDs flashes qickly: output short-circuited / slowly: internal malfunction.

The function check output switches in the case of

  • wrong sensing of the object (maladjustment, soiling of the lens), reset after the object has been sensed again properly;
  • a short circuit of the switching output, reset about 4s after the fault has been eliminated.
