Frequently Asked Questions - DB9 Tripp Lite

How to install the Tripp Lite DB9 surge protector?
Make sure the equipment is powered off and unplug the cable. Connect the DB9 directly to the equipment port. Attach the green ground wire to the equipment chassis. Reconnect the cable to the other side of the DB9. To reverse the orientation, remove the thumbscrews, reverse the connector, and retighten the screws.
What types of ports are protected by the DB9?
The Tripp Lite DB9 protects 9-pin RS232 serial ports, both male and female, with its reversible connector.
Does the DB9 protect both ends of the cable?
No, the DB9 only protects the equipment on the side where it is installed. For full protection, it is recommended to install a protector at each end of the cable.
How to reverse the orientation of the DB9 connector?
Unscrew the thumbscrews, remove the connector, rotate it 180 degrees to change from male to female (or vice versa), then retighten the screws.
What is the nominal clamping voltage of the DB9?
The nominal clamping voltage is 18 volts, protecting pins 1 through 9 as well as the chassis.
What is the warranty of the Tripp Lite DB9 surge protector?
The DB9 comes with a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. If you encounter a problem, contact Tripp Lite for a free replacement or repair.
Can I use the DB9 with a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)?
Yes, but make sure the UPS is not plugged into the output of a surge suppressor, as that would void the warranty. The DB9 protects the data line; for complete protection, also use a surge suppressor on the power supply.
Does the DB9 protect against lightning?
Yes, the DB9 protects against transient AC currents generated by lightning, as well as electrostatic discharge and ground surges.
What is the difference between the DB9 and the DB25?
The DB9 protects 9-pin serial ports (RS232), while the DB25 protects 25-pin ports (RS232, pins 1-8 and 20). The DB25-ALL protects all 25 pins.
Where should I attach the ground wire of the DB9?
Attach the green ground wire directly to the chassis of the protected equipment. This ensures proper grounding for optimal protection.

INSTALLATION

  1. Make sure the computer, network device or other equipment is logged OFF the network (if applicable). Turn OFF power to the equipment.
  2. Disconnect the cable from the equipment to be protected.
  3. Connect the Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor directly to the equipment. DB9 and DB25 models are reversible, to work with male or female ports. To change gender, remove the thumbscrews, reverse their direction and re-install.
  4. Attach the green ground wire on the surge suppressor directly to the protected equipment's chassis. (Except DB9 and DB25 models.)
  5. Reconnect the cable to the Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor.

NOTE!

The Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor must be properly grounded and positioned as close as possible to the equipment to be protected. For best results, it is required that the length of the signal line and ground wire (if equipped) between the surge suppressor and the protected equipment be kept as short as possible, not to exceed 12 inches (12"). It is best to install the surge suppressor directly to the equipment, as noted above.

NOTE!

Installing a typical Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor is equivalent to adding approximately three feet (3') of typical data communication cable to a segment.

CAUTION!

The Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor does not protect the equipment on the opposite end of the cable. Normally, protection at both ends is recommended.

Tripp Lite DB9 - CAUTION! - 1

CAUTION!

Use of this equipment in life support applications where failure of this equipment can reasonably be expected to cause the failure of the life support equipment or to significantly affect its safety or effectiveness is not recommended. Do not use this equipment in the presence of a flammable anesthetic mixture with air, oxygen or nitrous oxide.

Tripp Lite DB9 - CAUTION! - 1

CAUTION!

When properly installed, the Data Shield by Tripp Lite Network Dataline Surge Suppressor will only protect against surges on the dataline portion of your installation. Simultaneous AC surge suppression/power protection in the form of an ISOBAR ^® surge suppressor or Tripp Lite UPS system is strongly recommended for complete system/network protection and can also extend Ultimate Lifetime Insurance coverage to connected equipment.
