How to Season Cast Iron Cooktop
Seasoning cast iron forms a protective layer that helps maintain an easy-release cooking surface and prevents rusting. Depending on frequency of use and types of food cooked, follow steps below to re-season Cast Iron Cooktop. Vegetable shortening or oils such as canola, peanut and vegetable are recommended for re-seasoning.
- Clean Cast Iron Cooktop as recommended.
-
Rub top only of Cooktop with a thin layer of oil. Wipe off any excess.
-
Place Cooktop upside down on top rack in oven.
- Add a long piece of heavy-duty (18-inches wide) aluminum foil directly under Cooktop onto lower rack to catch any drips.
- Bake at 450^ (232^) for 1 hour.
- Allow to cool completely in oven.
For Stubborn Spots
- With Cooktop plugged into outlet and Drip Tray in place, preheat to 300^ (149^) . Over top of preheated Cooktop, pour about 1/4 cup water. Water will bubble up to dislodge food particles. When bubbles subside, use a spatula to scrape water and residue into opening of Drip Tray.
- Hold a lint-free cloth with metal tongs to wipe Cooktop surface dry. Repeat if necessary.
- Before storing, always wipe Cooktop with a little oil.
NOTES:
- Do not leave in sink to soak, put in dishwasher, allow to air dry, or store in a moist area. Any of these will cause rust since preseasoned layers have been disturbed and moisture has been in contact with your cast iron.
