  • DALI PHANTOM M Series speakers must not be exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Switch o the amplifier when connecting cables to speakers and amplifiers.
  • DALI PHANTOM M Series speakers must be installed by professionals.
  • Always make sure that there are no installations such as gas or water pipes, ventilation ducts, or cables, etc. in the wall at speaker mounting locations.
  • The wall must be able to support the weight of the speakers – see the technical specifications.
  • If speakers are mounted in a wall that incorporates a vapour barrier, make sure not to puncture or damage it.

Be careful not to damage the contents when you unpack the carton. Check that all the components listed in Table 1 are present. Keep the packaging materials for use if the speakers should ever need to be relocated or serviced.

4.0 SETUP AND POSITIONING

DALI PHANTOM M Series speakers provide the unique and acclaimed sound of a DALI speaker with easy and discreet integration into your home. The DALI PHANTOM M Series is equally suited to stereo and home theatre systems (see 4.3) where great sound quali is a high priori. The DALI PHANTOM M Series is also appropriate for larger scale installations where high quali sound is required; halls or retail spaces, for example. The DALI PHANTOM M Series can provide full-range audio, however for reproduction of the lowest bass frequencies and an overall performance enhancement, a subwoofer can be integrated with your PHANTOM M series system. The switch found on the front panel of the speakers (see figure 8) can be used to adjust the sound mode. The HF+ seing is recommended for applications where an acoustically transparent video screen is located between the speaker and the listening position. The high frequency aenuation caused by the screen will be compensated in this mode. In all other applications, the normal mode is recommended. For stereo and home theatre we recommend that the speakers are located symmetrically around the listening position to achieve the optimum soundstage (see figure 1A + 1B). To avoid compromising clari from the speakers, it is also important not to locate them too far away from the listening position.UK DE CN FR DALI A/S www.dali-speakers.com 7

For the best possible audio experience the speakers should be positioned as shown in figure 2. Objects positioned between the speakers and listening position can negatively aect the sound quali. The PHANTOM M Series was designed with our wide dispersion sound principle in mind. By using speakers with wide dispersion technology, performance in the main listening area will be enhanced and the room integration will be improved. The wide dispersion principle also helps ensure that sound is distributed evenly within a large area of the listening room. Every room has its own distinctive acoustic which influence the way we experience sound from speakers. The sound we hear consists of both direct sound from the speakers and reflected sound from the floor, ceiling and walls. As a basic rule, try to avoid large, reflective surfaces in the immediate vicini of the speakers as these will cause strong reflections which can disturb the precision of the sound. So items such as carpets, curtains, etc. will help if the sound is too bright. Both the volume and quali of the deep bass depends on the size and shape of the room, and the location of the speakers. Locating the speakers towards corner locations will tend to accentuate bass, but may also result in potentially detrimental reflections.

4.1 Mounting the dogleg brackets

DALI PHANTOM M Series incorporates dogleg brackets for in-wall mounting. The brackets aach the speaker firmly to the rear of the surface on which it is mounted. The dogleg brackets extend out at a 90 degree angle when the screws are tightened (see figure 3). The screws should be tightened so that the speaker sits securely in place – but be careful not to over tighten the screws. To tighten the screws, use an appropriate bit. The bit can be used with a hand-held screwdriver or an electric drill that incorporates torque limiting. If using a drill, set the torque to its minimum. The screws are appropriately tightened, when the gasket on the rear of the speaker is compressed and the bezel of the speaker is flush with the mounting surface. If you need to remove the speaker, loosen the screws approximately 5 to 20 turns counter-clockwise and the brackets will loosen their grip. NOTE: Do not unscrew more than 20 to 25 turns or the brackets may disengage with the screws. If the speakers are to be mounted in a particularly thick wall, it may be necessary to dismount the dogleg brackets from the screws then invert and replace them. Inverted doglegs brackets make it possible to mount the speaker in walls up to 2.75”/70 mm thick (see figure 4).DALI PHANTOM M8

The grille is aached by magnets incorporated in the frame of the speaker. Place the grille so that it covers the top of the speaker and the magnets will secure it. NOTE: The fabric on the inside of the grille is present to protect the drivers from dust and dirt and should only be removed temporarily to enable grille painting.

4.3 PHANTOM M mounted horizontal (centre channel)

DALI PHANTOM M speakers can be used for le, right, centre or surround channels. If used in landscape orientation the hybrid tweeter module of the M-375 should be rotated to remain vertical. This is important to preserve the wide dispersion and fine detail of the high frequencies. The hybrid tweeter modules are pre-configured for portrait orientation. If a speaker is to be used in landscape orientation, an authorized DALI dealer or service facili can rotate the hybrid tweeter module. To remove the hybrid tweeter module from the cabinet, remove the four screws. When disassembled, rotate the module 90 degrees. Insert the rotated module and reinstall it using the four screws (Figure 5). Do not to over tighten the screws.

4.4 Connection of Cables/Selection of Cables

The choice of cables is an important element of any speaker installation. Replacing cables following installation is potentially dicult so it is best to select quali cables from the start. Your authorized DALI dealer can oer advice if required on which cable to select. When connecting the cable to the speaker and the amplifier, it is important that the speakers are connected in correct phase. The red (+) speaker terminal must be connected to the red (+) amplifier terminal. The black (-) speaker terminal must be connected to the black (-) amplifier terminal. If the speakers are not connected in correct phase, the soundstage will be diuse and the bass will be weak. To insert the cable end into the spring loaded terminals of the speaker, remove cable insulation so that approximately ½” / 12 mm of bare wire is exposed. Press the top of the terminal down and insert the bare wire into the opening. When the wire is fully in place with no loose strands exposed, release the terminal (see figure 6).

5.0 CUT-OUT TEMPLATE

The enclosed cut-out template (see figure 7) can be used initially to visualize where your speakers should be mounted and then for marking where the wall aperture should be made. Tape the template at the preferred mounting position, so that you can mark the necessary cut line. The minimum mounting depth for the DALI PHANTOM M series is 100 mm.UK DE CN FR DALI A/S www.dali-speakers.com 9

Please study and follow the safe guidelines found in chapter 2.0 of this manual! The DALI PHANTOM M Series must be installed by a trained professional to ensure that all safe requirements are met and to prevent the speaker from falling. The following tools and items are necessary for correct installation:

  • Hand bit screwdriver (optional)
  • Cut-out template When the correct placement has been established, tape the cut-out template to the wall surface. Outline the cut-out area with a pencil. Remove the template and drill holes for the insertion of a saw or knife. Saw/cut carefully along the pencil line. When the aperture for the speaker is finished, make sure that the speaker cable is not hanging loose inside the wall. It must be securely fastened to the inside of the wall to prevent tension on the cable when it is connected to the speaker terminals. If le unsupported, the cable can gradually become loose under its own weight, resulting in a poor connection or even disconnection (see figure 6 for correct fastening of the cable). When the speaker cable is fastened and the aperture for the speaker is prepared, you are ready to connect the speaker cables. Please refer to chapter 4.4 of this manual. When the cables are connected, switch on the system and listen to the speaker before final mounting to ensure sure that the connections are correct. Be careful not to touch the speaker drivers during installation. When the speaker is aligned, tighten the screws in the speaker brackets so that the speaker is firmly mounted in place. Be careful to avoid over-tightening the screws and stripping the threads.

You should expect the sound quali from your new speakers gradually to improve during the first period of use. Nothing specific has to be done in order to run-in the speakers but up to 100 hours of use (depending on playback level) may be required before full performance is reached.DALI PHANTOM M10

8.0 MAGNETIC SHIELDING

Speaker drivers generate a magnetic field which may interfere with CRT televisions/monitors, hard drives, audio and video tapes as well as swipe cards etc. Therefore keep such items away from the speakers to avoid damage. LCD and plasma televisions/monitors are not aected by magnetic fields.

Cleaning the speaker surfaces can be done with ordinary household cleaning agents. Avoid using products that are abrasive, or contain acid, alkali or anti- bacterial agents. Avoid using aerosols. Avoid using cleaning agents directly on the drive units and clean them with extreme care, particularly the tweeter. The grille may be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner or a normal clothes brush.

10.0 ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION AND

DISPOSAL DALI products are designed to meet the international directives concerning Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and disposal of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). The waste symbol indicates that the speakers meet the directives (see figure 9). The speakers must be processed or recycled appropriately. Please consult your local waste authori for guidance.
