Frequently Asked Questions - Profile Opal XPIO13BCBT GE

How to install the side reservoir?
Place the reservoir base on the right or left side of the machine. Slide the clip under the appliance near the front, then slide the reservoir onto the clip. Ensure the drain hose (B) is connected to the reservoir base. Fill the reservoir with water, replace the cap, then turn it upright onto its base. Water will circulate automatically.
How to clean and descale my ice maker?
Unplug the appliance. Remove the water filter and drain. For descaling, fill the reservoir with white vinegar up to the Max Fill line. For sanitization, use one teaspoon of bleach in water. Plug in and hold the Clean button for 3 seconds. Let it sit (descaling: up to 18 hours; sanitization: short cycle). Drain and rinse several times with clean water.
What to do if the "Add Water" light comes on?
Fill the reservoir with potable water up to the Max Fill line. If using the side reservoir, ensure it is full and the supply hose is not blocked. After filling, the light turns off and production resumes.
How to connect the SmartHQ app?
Download the SmartHQ app from your app store. Follow the in-app instructions to connect your Opal ice maker. The WiFi light on the unit confirms a successful connection. You can then control and monitor production remotely.
Why is my ice maker making noise?
Sounds like humming (fan), buzzing (water pump), clicking (refrigerant circulation), gurgling (system shutdown), or clicks (ice dropping) are normal. A squeaking sound indicates the need for automatic defrost. Most noises decrease after stabilization.
What does the flashing "Cleaning" light mean?
The Cleaning light flashes after 100 hours of production to remind you to descale. Start a cleaning cycle by holding the Clean button for 3 seconds. The flashing stops once the cycle is complete.
Can I use a water filter?
Yes, an optional water filter is available. Remove the screened inlet cap and install the filter. Note that when cleaning, you must remove the filter and replace the cap. Use only the GE Appliances Opal water filter.
How to drain the water?
Unplug the appliance. Disconnect the drain hoses at the back (A and B). Place them in a sink or bucket lower than the machine. Remove the plugs to allow water to drain completely. Replace the plugs and reconnect the hoses after draining.
What is the recommended ambient temperature?
The ideal ambient temperature is between 55 °F and 90 °F (13 °C to 32 °C). Avoid heat sources and direct sunlight. Too low or too high temperature may reduce ice production.
How to start ice production?
Make sure the water reservoir is filled to the Max Fill line with potable water. Plug in the unit and press the Power button. The power light turns on. The first ice appears in about 20 minutes. Production continues until the bin is full or water runs out.

Proper Installation and Location

The side tank should be installed flush to the front of the Opal Nugget Ice maker. Opal Side Tank needs to sit on the same level surface as your Opal Nugget Ice Maker. Do not elevate Opal Side Tank, or your Opal may overflow.

Side Tank Troubleshooting

If water does not flow from the Side Tank to the Opal Ice Maker:

There may be bubbles in the tube connecting the side tank to the Opal if the tube is not lying flat. Try adjusting the tube to allow the water to flow. Once water starts flowing it typically will not need further adjusting.

Troubleshooting

Normal Operating Sounds

Your new ice maker may make sounds that are not familiar. Most of these sounds are normal. Hard surfaces like the floor, walls, and countertops can amplify these sounds. The following describes the sounds that may be new to you and what may be creating them.

■ WHIR - When Opal is first turned on, you may notice the condenser fan spinning.
■ BUZZ - When the water pump first turns on, it may be dry and slightly noisy. Once it is filled with water, the noise reduces significantly.
■ RATTLE - Rattling noises may be produced from the flow of the refrigerant. These noises should reduce significantly once the refrigerant system has stabilized.
■ GURGLE - When the refrigerant system shuts off, there may be a brief gurgle as the refrigerant stops flowing.
■ HUM - The compressor is a motor. It produces a low toned humming sound while it is running.

  • CLICK - As nugget ice is produced, it drops into the ice drawer. The first nuggets produced are the loudest, as they impact the bottom of the ice bin. As the bin fills, this noise reduces significantly.
    ■ SQUEAK – When Opal is in need of defrosting, it may start to squeak as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. The defost cycle is automatic, and may take 30-45 minutes. During this time, the front button won't respond. More frequent squeaking usually requires white vinegar cleaning to remove internal mineral scale buildup.
