Frequently Asked Questions - Divine Plus PALSON

How to prepare an espresso with the Divine Plus?
Fill the water tank, turn on the machine. Insert the filter holder with a spoon of espresso ground coffee (without tamping). Wait for the indicator light to stop flashing, turn the knob to the Coffee position. Serve as soon as the cups are full. See the manual for more details.
How to froth milk with the steam nozzle?
Pour 60-100 ml of cold milk into a container. Turn the knob to the steam position after preheating. Immerse the nozzle into the milk, point it towards the bottom then gradually raise it to froth. Caution: the nozzle is hot. Turn the knob to off when the froth is ready.
How to descale the machine?
Mix one third of white vinegar with water or a sachet of citric acid in the tank. Insert the empty filter holder, place a container under the steam nozzle. Turn the knob directly to Steam without preheating. Let it run, then repeat with clear water. Do not use non-recommended descaler.
Why is my coffee bitter?
Too fine a grind can make coffee bitter. Use a grind suitable for espresso, slightly granular. Do not tamp the coffee in the filter holder. Also check that the machine does not need descaling.
What to do if the machine does not heat up?
Make sure the appliance is plugged into a 220-240 V outlet. Check that the water tank is properly placed and filled. If the indicator light does not come on, contact customer service. Do not disassemble the appliance.
How to clean the steam nozzle?
Detach the frothing tip by pulling on the black washer. Unscrew the end with a hex key and remove the stainless steel plate. Wash all components in warm soapy water, rinse, and dry before reassembling. Do not put in dishwasher.
Can I use filter ground coffee?
No, the Divine Plus is designed for espresso ground coffee. Filter coffee has a too coarse grind and will produce very weak coffee. Always use a suitable grind.
How to preheat cups?
Place the cups on the cup warming plate while the machine heats up. You can also run hot water without coffee into the cups before serving.
What does the flashing indicator mean?
The green light flashes during the preheating of the machine. When it stops flashing, the appliance has reached the ideal temperature for coffee extraction or steam.
How to store the machine after use?
Unplug the appliance and let it cool down. Empty the water tank and the drip tray. Clean the steam nozzle and the filter holder. Store it in a dry place, away from frost.

TIPS

- To get the best taste from the coffee grains, we recommend you use whole grains which have been freshly ground every time an espresso is prepared. Check that the coffee is correctly ground for making espresso coffee. Grinding it too finely will produce coffee with a bitter taste. Grinding it too thick will produce coffee with a weaker taste. The perfect grind for espresso is slightly granulated, with a texture somewhere between that of sugar and flour.

Grains that are not ground at the same level or which have been exposed to too much heat during grinding will also affect the final result, for which reason ensure that you use a high-quality grinder

GB

that grinds the grains to the right size for even extraction, without overheating the grains and removing their natural oils.

  • In addition to the coffee you use, the use of cold water with no chlorine aroma will help guarantee a perfect espresso.
  • Store the ground coffee in a watertight container in a cool, dry place, to retain its flavour. Ground coffee must not be kept for long periods of time as its flavour is reduced over time.
  • Do not fill the filter holder to the brim, use the measuring scoop that is included. Use 1 scoop of ground coffee for each cup of espresso.
  • If you are not going to use the machine for more than 5 days running, clean it and drain the water tank.
  • Before removing the water tank to fill or empty it, always put the machine to the off setting.
    · Always place the appliance on a flat, stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • To obtain an espresso with just the right temperature, warm the cups first.

IMPORTANT!

Before using the appliance for the first time, after a prolonged period of non-use or after de-incrusting it, clean the machine as described in “USING FOR THE FIRST TIME”.

USING FOR THE FIRST TIME

Before using the espresso machine for the first time, clean all the accessories with warm water and a mild detergent for use in dishwashers, and rinse them well before replacing.

PREPARING THE MACHINE

After rinsing the appliance:

  • Open the lid and remove the water tank using the handle (fig.1).
  • Fill it with water.
  • Replace the water tank securely, to ensure the water input is in place, and close the lid.
  • Connect the appliance by turning the control button to the _cafe/coffe function (Pre-heating) (fig.2).
  • Insert the filter holder (without any coffee) in the appliance (fig.3).
  • Place a container with sufficient capacity below the filter holder.
  • Once the appliance has reached the correct temperature, the lamp will stop flashing. Turn the control button to the function (Coffee) and allow all the water in the tank to be consumed (fig.4).
  • If necessary, stop the operation by turning the button to the off setting to empty the tank and then continue with the operation (fig.5).
  • Empty the container and unlock the filter holder: grasp the filter holder and turn it to the left (fig.6).

MAKING AN ESPRESSO

PRE-HEATING THE ACCESSORIES

To obtain the best results, we recommend you pre-heat the accessories (filter holder and cups) without the ground coffee.

To do this:

  1. Fill the water tank and turn the machine on.
  2. Put the filter holder in place with the cups below it.

As soon as the appliance reaches the correct temperature, the lamp will stop flashing.

  1. Turn the control button to the ☐ setting (Coffee) (fig.4).

  2. When the cups have been filled with hot water, turn the button to the off setting (fig.5).

  3. Remove the cups.
  4. Release the filter holder by turning the handle to the left to release it and remove the filter holder from the machine (fig. 6).

NOTE: When the appliance is hot, the espresso cups can be warmed on the cup-warming plate.

WITH GROUND COFFEE

The type of coffee you choose will determine the strength and taste of the espresso. Always use ground coffee for espressos. Do not use instant coffee, percolator coffee or filter coffee.

A. Fill the water tank and turn the machine on. During the pre-heating process the lamp will flash.
B. Use the measuring scoop to put the ground coffee for espressos in the filter holder: one scoop (filled to the brim) per cup.
C. Remove all excess ground coffee from the filter edge.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT PRESS THE COFFEE DOWN INTO THE FILTER HOLDER.

- Insert the filter holder into the appliance by turning it to the right as far as it will go, until it stops (fig.3).

- Place one or two cups below the filter holder (fig.4).

D. As soon as the appliance reaches the correct temperature, the lamp will stop flashing.

E. Turn the control button to the ☐ setting (Coffee) (fig.4).

F. When the cups have been filled with hot water, turn the button to the off setting (fig.5).

G. Unblock the filter holder: by turning it to the left and removing it from the machine (fig.6).

H. Remove the used coffee grounds. Wash the filter holder under the tap to eliminate all traces of ground coffee. The filter holder can be filled again to prepare more espressos.

STEAM FUNCTION

The steam is used to foam the milk (for instance, to make a capuccino or white coffee).

To generate the steam, the pump functions and emits an intermittent sound.

After using the steam function, the appliance is automatically cooled by pumping cold water through the heating system. During the pumping cycles, all excess steam in the heating system is released with the hot water in the drip tray. The steam and sound that is emitted during this phase are important for cooling the appliance.

WARNING: WHILE USING THE APPLIANCE AND AFTER USING IT, THE METAL PARTS IN THE STEAM NOZZLE MAY BECOME VERY HOT.

USING THE STEAM NOZZLE TO FROTH THE MILK

a. Fill the water tank and turn the machine on (Making an Espresso a, b, c and d).
b. Turn the control button to the _vapor/steam setting (Pre-heating of steam). The indicator lamp will flash (fig.7).
c. Move the steam nozzle outside the machine.

d. Pour 60-100ml of fresh skimmed milk, semi-skimmed milk or full cream milk into a small jug with a capacity of about half a litre that fits beneath the steam nozzle. The milk and jug must be cold.

e. We recommend using pasteurised or long-life milk and not using non-pasteurised milk.

f. As soon as the lamp stops flashing, submerge the nozzle into the milk.

g. Turn the control button to the ⏻ setting (Steam) (fig.8).

h. To obtain the best result, aim the nozzle at the bottom of the jug for 25 seconds while the milk heats (without touching the bottom). Then gradually lower the jug so that the nozzle emerges towards the surface (without actually taking it out of the milk).

GB

i. Once the milk has frothed, turn the button to the off setting. The appliance will automatically cool down by launching three intermittent pumping cycles. Once these automatic pumping operations have terminated, you can make the coffee (fig. 5).

WARNING: THE STEAM NOZZLE IS VERY HOT!!

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

IMPORTANT: The espresso machine accessories must not be washed in the dishwasher. Do not wash the scoop, drip tray, filter holder and water tank in the dishwasher.

CLEANING THE MACHINE

a. To prevent damages, always disconnect the machine before cleaning it and wait until it cools down. Clean the outside of the machine with a clean damp cloth. Do not use abrasive or harsh products or products that contain alcohol / solvents to clean the machine. Use only mild detergents suitable for use in dishwashers and warm water. After each use, rinse the water tank and empty it before replacing it in the machine.
b. When a fine layer of white powder starts to build up on the tank, this means that it needs to be de-incrusted. It is advisable to clean these deposits regularly with a cleaning product.

DE-INCRUSTING THE MACHINE

  • Empty the water tank and replace it.
  • Fill the tank with a mixture of three parts white vinegar or a mixture of 12 litre of water and a packet of citric acid, which is available in stores.
  • Insert the filter holder (without ground coffee) and lock it in position by turning it to the right. Place a container beneath the steam nozzle to collect the water.
  • Turn the button to the ⏻ setting (Steam), without stopping on the ⏻ setting (Pre-heating of steam).
  • Leave the mixture to flow through the nozzle until steam is produced.
  • Place the container beneath the filter holder.
  • When the lamp stops flashing, turn the button to the ⌘ calo / coffee setting (Pre-heat).
  • After 15 minutes turn the button to the ☐ setting (Coffee).
  • Let the rest of the water flow through until the tank is empty.

IMPORTANT!

After de-incrusting the machine, perform 2-3 cleaning cycles with clean water (without ground coffee for espressos), as described in "Using for the first time". Remember to clean the steam nozzle in accordance with the directions given below:

- Fill the water tank with clean water. Then place a container beneath the steam nozzle. Turn the button to the ⏻ setting (Steam), without stopping on the _setting (Pre-heating of steam).

Let the water drain through the nozzle until steam starts to be generated. Turn the control button to the ⏻ setting (Steam).

The machine is now de-incrusted and ready to be used again.

DE-INCRUSTING THE STEAM AND COFFEE CIRCUIT

  • Immediately turn the button to the ⏻ setting (Steam), without stopping on the ⏻ setting (Pre-heating of steam).
  • Leave the water to flow through the nozzle until steam is produced.
  • Turn the button again to the off setting.
The appliance is now de-incrusted and ready to be used again.

CLEANING THE DRIP TRAY

The drip tray must be emptied every time the machine is used. The presence of water in the tray is normal and is not a sign of leakage. Raise the tray slightly and pull it outwards to remove it from the machine. If preparing many espressos one after another, the drip tray must be emptied after every few coffees to prevent it from overflowing. The red excess liquid indicators in the tray will float and remain visible, to remind you to empty the tray before it overflows. After emptying the tray, remove it and clean the bottom compartment. If necessary, the metal tray and compartment can be washed with warm water and a mild detergent for use in dishwashers. Rinse the drip tray thoroughly and dry it completely before replacing it in the machine. When replacing it, check that it has been pushed fully into the machine to prevent leakages (fig.9).

CLEANING THE DRAINIG HEAD AND FILTER HOLDER

a. The filter head and filter holder must be cleaned after each use.
b. Clean the filter head with a clean damp cloth.
c. Wash the filter holder with warm water and a mild soap for use in dishwashers. Do not use strong or abrasive cleaning products, or products containing alcohol or solvents to clean the filter head or filter holder. Hold the filter holder under a tap with running water to clean it. Rinse well and dry carefully. When the espresso machine is not in use, do not maintain the filter holder in the locked position. This will prevent unnecessary wearing of the seal.

CLEANING THE STEAM NOZZLE

  • To clean the steam nozzle release the nozzle by pulling the black washer (fig.10).
  • To clean it, unscrew the end of the nozzle using a hex key at the end of the scoop, and then remove the stainless steel shield. Clean all the components with warm running water and a mild detergent for use in dishwashers. Rinse well and dry thoroughly before replacing in the machine (fig.11).
  • Screw the nozzle facing upwards with the hex key and cover with the stainless steel shield (figs. 12-13).
