3. Functions

The smoke detector has been designed to sense smoke that reaches the detector. The device does not detect gas, heat or flames. The smoke detector is designed to give an early warning before a fire breaks out by emitting an alarm sound. It can buy you valuable time so that you and your family can get to safety before a fire spreads.

Such an advance warning of a fire accident will be given only if the smoke detector is properly placed, installed and maintained as described in this user manual.

4. Important information about this smoke detector

Caution! This smoke detector is intended for use in individual residences. That is, it should be used in a single family home or a single-family apartment. It should not be used in lobbies, hallways, basements or another flat in an apartment block, unless there are already working detectors in each family residence. Smoke detectors that are installed in common areas outside the individual residences, such as on porches or in hallways, may not provide any early warning to the residents. In apartment blocks, each family residence should install their own smoke detectors.

This smoke detector is not suitable for use in non-residential buildings. Warehouses, industrial or commercial buildings and non-residential buildings with specific purposes require special fire detection and alarm systems. This detector alone is not a suitable substitute for a complete fire detection system in places where many people live or work, such as hotels or motels. The same applies to dormitories, hospitals, nursing homes or group accommodations of all kinds, even if they were once single-family houses. Please refer to NFPA 101, the safety code for life safety and NFPA71, 72A, 72B, 72C, 72D and 72E for smoke detector requirements for fire protection in buildings that are not defined as "households". The batteries are inserted the wrong way round. Please ensure that you insert them correctly before initial use.

5. Positioning the smoke detector

Smoke detectors must be installed in accordance with the applicable standard DIN 14676 For complete coverage in residences, smoke detectors must be installed in all the rooms, halls, storage areas, basements and attics in every residential unit of a family. The minimum coverage is one detector on each floor and one in each bedroom per residential unit of a family.

Here are some useful tips for you:

  1. Install a smoke detector in the corridor outside each separate bedroom.
  2. Two detectors are required in apartments with two bedrooms.

  3. Install a smoke detector on each floor of a multi-storied house or a multi-storied apartment.

  4. Install at least two detectors in each household.
  5. Install one smoke detector in each bedroom.
  6. Install smoke detectors at both ends of a bedroom corridor if the corridor is more than 12 meters (40 feet) long.
  7. Install a smoke detector in every room where people sleep with the door partially or completely closed, since the smoke could be blocked by the closed door and an alarm in the corridor may not wake the sleeping person if the door is closed.
  8. Install basement detectors at the bottom of the basement stairwell. Install detectors for the second floor at the top between the first and second floor stairwell.
  9. In hallways and corridors with a maximum width of 3m the distance between two smoke detectors should not exceed 15m

  1. Make sure that doors or other objects do not block the path of smoke to the detector.
  2. Install additional detectors in your living room, dining room, family room, attic, utility room and storage rooms in addition to the bedrooms.
  3. Install smoke detectors as close as possible to the centre of the ceiling. If this is not practical, install the detector on the ceiling, not closer than 10 cm (4 inches) from each wall or corner.
  4. If ceiling installation is not possible, and wall installation is permitted according to local and state regulations, install the detectors on the wall at a distance of 10 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) from the ceiling, see Figure 4.
  5. If some of your rooms have sloped, pointed or gabled ceilings, try to install the detectors at 0.9 meter (3 feet) measured horizontally from the highest point of the ceiling.

We recommend complete coverage and use of additional smoke detectors.

5. Positioning smoke detectors in mobile homes and campers

Campers and caravans, which were built after about 1978, were designed and insulated to be energy efficient. Smoke detectors should be installed as described above in campers and caravans which were built after 1978. Older campers and caravans may have little or no insulation compared to today's standards. Outer walls and ceilings often consist of non-insulated metal that can transfer the heat energy from the outside.

This makes the air right next to you hotter or colder than the rest of the indoor air. These layers of hotter or colder air can prevent smoke from reaching a smoke detector. Therefore, install smoke detectors in such units only on the inside walls. Position them at a distance of 10 to 15 cm from the ceiling.

If you are not sure how well your camper or caravan is insulated, install the detector on an interior wall. If the walls or ceiling are unusually hot or cold, then install the detector on an interior wall.

Install a detector as close as possible to the bedroom to ensure minimum safety or install a detector in every room to provide a higher level of safety.

Brandson 304967 - Positioning smoke detectors in mobile homes and campers - 1

Before installing a detector, please read the following section on "Places not suitable for installation".

5.2 Places not suitable for installation (may result in false alarms)

False alarms may occur when smoke detectors are installed in places where they do not work properly. To avoid false alarms, do not install smoke detectors under the following circumstances:

Combustion particles are the by-products of something that burns. Therefore do not install smoke detectors in or near areas where combustion particles are present so as to avoid false alarms, for example, in kitchens with few windows or poor ventilation, in garages where vehicle exhaust emissions may be present, near furnaces, hot water heaters and room heaters.

Install the smoke detector at least 6 meters away from places where combustion particles are normally present, such as kitchens. If a distance of 6 meters cannot be maintained, e.g., in a camper, then try to install the detector as far away as possible from the combustion particles, preferably on the wall. To prevent false alarms, ensure good ventilation in such places.

Caution!: Never disable smoke detectors to avoid false alarms.

  • Please remember the following in damp or very humid areas or near bathrooms with showers: Moisture in humid air can penetrate into the sensing chamber and then turn into droplets when cooling down, which can result in false alarms. Install smoke detectors at least 3 meters away from bathrooms.

  • In very cold or very hot areas, including unheated buildings or outdoor areas: If the temperature exceeds or falls below the operating range of the smoke detector, then the smoke detector will not work properly. The temperature range for your smoke detector is 0^ to 50^ (32°F to 120°F).

  • In very dusty or dirty areas, dirt and dust can accumulate on the sensor chamber of the smoke detector making it hypersensitive. Additionally, dust or dirt can block openings to the sensing chamber and prevent the detector from detecting smoke.
In the vicinity of fresh air vents or very draughty areas such as air conditioners, heaters or fans, the smoke can be driven away from smoke detectors.
  • Dead air spaces are often located at the tip of a pointed roof or in the corners between ceilings and walls. Dead air can prevent the smoke from reaching a detector.
  • In areas infested with insects: Insects can trigger a false alarm if they penetrate into the sensor chamber of a detector. If insects pose a problem, eliminate them before installing a detector.
  • Electrical "noise" of fluorescent lamps can trigger a false alarm in their vicinity. Install smoke detectors at least 1.5 meters away from such lamps.

Brandson 304967 - Caution!: Never disable smoke detectors to avoid false alarms. - 1

Never remove batteries to stop an alarm. Open a window or fan the air around the detector to get rid of the smoke. The alarm switches off automatically once the smoke is gone. If the fault alarm persists, try cleaning the detector as described in this user manual.

Do not stand near the detector when the alarm goes off. The alarm is loud to wake you up in an emergency. Too much exposure to the alarm sound at close proximity may damage your ears.

5.3 Installation

The smoke detectors should be installed on the ceiling or on the wall. Since this is a single smoke detector, it cannot be connected to other detectors.

Brandson 304967 - Installation - 1

Caution! Do not connect the smoke detectors to other alarms or auxiliary devices. If you connect anything else to this detector, it may not work properly.

First read the previous sections in this user manual and then decide where you want to install a detector.

  1. At the spot where you want to install the detector, draw a horizontal line 6 inches (about 15.24cm ) in length.
  2. Remove the mounting bracket from your device by turning it counter-clockwise.
  3. Position the bracket so that the two longest slots are aligned with the line. Make a mark in each of the keyhole slots to position a mounting plug and screw.
  4. Remove the bracket.
  5. Drill two holes with a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill at the marks and insert plastic dowels. Make sure that the detector is not contaminated with plaster dust when drilling holes for mounting.
  6. Fix the bracket to the wall using the two screws and plastic dowels (included in the supply).
  7. Align the slots of the brackets and that of the detector. Slide the detector onto the mounting bracket and turn it clockwise to fix it into place. Pull the detector to ensure that it is securely fixed to the bracket.

Caution!

The smoke detector is designed for indoor use only. Do not expose the device to any moisture or rain.

The product does not warn against fire or smoke if the batteries are empty.

Do not open or manipulate the smoke detector since this could result in malfunctions.

6. Installation

The smoke detector is operated with one 9V battery and does not require any extra wiring. You can install the device either on the ceiling or on a wall.

7. Commissioning the smoke detector

Take the device out of the package and remove all the packaging material. Open the battery compartment on the rear side of the device and insert one 9V battery. Pay attention to the correct polarity of the batteries.

7.1 Battery

  1. Open the battery compartment at the back of the device.

  2. One 9V battery is required to supply power to the smoke detector.

  3. The poles at the end(s) of the battery must be connected to the opposite terminal connections on the detector. Ensure that the battery is inserted in the position indicated on the detector.

  4. Once the poles are aligned correctly, push the battery down firmly until it locks into place and can not be shaken loose.

Brandson 304967 - Battery - 2

This smoke detector is provided with cover locks, which prevent the cover of the smoke detector from closing when the battery is not installed. It indicates that the smoke detector does not work until a new battery is properly installed. The battery is positioned INCORRECTLY in the battery compartment with the intention to keep it fresh until installation. It must be repositioned correctly!

NOTE: When the smoke detector battery comes into contact with the smoke detector for the first time, the alarm may sound for one second. This is normal and indicates that the battery is positioned correctly. Close the cover.

7.2 Self-test

Press the test button and keep it pressed for about 5 seconds until you hear the alarm. You should hear a loud, pulsating alarm. This means that the device is working properly.

7.3 LED display (red LED)

The red LED as ALARM indicator is part of the smoke detector. It can be seen through the test button on the cover of the detector. If the red LED

Brandson 304967 - LED display (red LED) - 1

flashes once every 32 seconds, it indicates that the detector is in normal mode. When the detector senses smoke and simultaneously gives off an audible alarm, then the red LED flashes once every 0.67 seconds.

7.4 Testing the smoke detector

Test the detector once a week by pressing the test button firmly (7.2 Self-test). The test can take up to 20 seconds until the alarm is heard. These are methods to ensure that the smoke detector is working properly. If the detector fails and does not work properly, it should be repaired or replaced.

Brandson 304967 - Testing the smoke detector - 1

Caution! Never use an open flame to test your detector. This could result in a fire causing damage to the detector and your home.

The built-in test switch tests all the detector functions. These are the only correct ways to test the device.

Brandson 304967 - Testing the smoke detector - 2

Caution! If you do not test the device and you hear a continuous alarm sound, it means that the detector has sensed smoke or combustion particles in the air. Check whether the alarm is a warning of a potentially serious situation that requires your immediate attention.

The alarm could be caused by unfavourable circumstances. Steam as well as smoke and soot from the oven can trigger a fault alarm. When this happens, open a window or fan the air to remove the steam and smoke or soot particles .. The alarm is switched off automatically once the air is completely clean.

Note: Do not disconnect the battery from the detector. This will nullify your fire safety.

7.5 Low battery

When the device detects that the battery voltage is low and the batteries need to be replaced, the red LED flashes once in about every 32 seconds and an alarm sounds. Replace the battery with a new one in such cases. Ensure that the polarity of the contact is correct when inserting the battery.

8. When the alarm goes off

When the alarm goes off and you did not press the test button, this is a warning of a dangerous situation involving a fire or smoke development.

To be prepared for such an event, you should work out escape plans. Discuss these escape plans regularly with all residents and household members.

Define two exits from each room and an escape route that leads to the outside. Designate a safe meeting place for all members outside the respective building.

8.1 Conduct in the event of fire

  • Do not panic, always remain calm.
  • Leave the building immediately. Touch the doors before opening them to see if they are hot. If the door is hot, it can be assumed that there is a fire behind it. If possible, try to select a different exit in this case.
  • If necessary, crawl along the floor, as the fumes are not as concentrated there. Do not waste time looking for valuables and choose a direct way out.
Call the fire brigade as soon as you are safe.
  • Never go back into the burning building.

9. Maintenance

To keep your detector in good working condition, you must test the detector once a week, as described in the section "7.4 Testing the smoke detector".

Replace the smoke detector battery once a year or immediately when the low battery "beep" signal sounds once for 32 seconds and the LED flashes simultaneously. Normally, the LED flashes every 32 seconds. A beep heard at half of the LED flashing time, indicates that the smoke detector is defective.

Vacuum the dust from the sensing chamber of the detector at least once a year. You can do this when you open the detector to change the battery. Remove the

battery before cleaning. Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean the detector. Carefully remove any dust on the detector components, especially on the openings of the sensing chamber. Replace the battery after cleaning. Test the detector to ensure that the battery has been inserted correctly. Ensure that the test button is not blocked.

If fault alarms continue to emanate from the detector, you should check whether the detector is positioned adequately. Install your smoke detector in another place if it is not properly positioned.
