CONVENTIONAL COIL ELEMENTS The conventional coil cartridge is the mostversatile of the cartridges. When anelement is on, it will cycle on and off tomaintain the heat setting. RADIANT AND HALOGEN ELEMENTS The two cooking areas are identified bycircles on the glass-ceramic cooktop. When an element is turned on, thecooktop will heat up and the red glow ofthe heating element can be seen throughthe glass-ceramic top. (NOTE: Onhalogen model, a circular halogen bulbwill glow instantly.) It is normal to see thered glow of the element whenever it cycleson. The element will cycle on and off forall control settings except Hi. However, itmay also cycle on Hi if improper cookwareis used.

  • Select heavy gauge cookware.Generally, heavy gauge cookware willnot change shape when heated.• Use cookware with flat, smoothbottoms. To determine if the cookwareis flat, place the edge of a ruler on thebottom. Hold up to the light. No lightshould be visible between the edge ofthe ruler and the pan. Reject any pansthat do not fit flush against ruler's edge.• Match the size of the cookware tothe size of the element. Cookwareshould be the same size or slightlylarger.IMPROPER COOKWARE• DO NOT use cookware that extendsmore than one inch beyond the cookingarea.• Cookware that is smaller in diameterthan the cooking area should not beused. They may scratchthe surface.• Do not allow plastic, sugar or foods withhigh sugar content to melt onto the hotcooktop. Should this happen, cleanimmediately. (See Cleaning, pages 6& 7.)• Never let a pan boil dry as this willdamage the surface and pan.• Never use cooktop as a work surface orcutting board. Never cook food directlyon the surface.• Do not slide aluminum pans across a hotsurface. The pans may leave marks whichneed to be removed promptly. (SeeCleaning, pages 6 & 7.)• Make sure the surface and the panbottom are clean before turning on toprevent scratches.• To prevent scratching or damage to theglass-ceramic top, do not leave sugar, salt or fats on the cooking area. Wipethe cooktop surface with a clean clothor paper towel before using.• Do not slide heavy metal pans across thesurface since these may scratch.• Do not use foil or foil-type containers.Foil may melt onto the glass. Callan authorized Jenn-Air Servicer.• If a spillover occurs while cooking, immediately clean the spill from thecooking area while it is hot to prevent atough cleaning chore later. Usingextreme care, wipe spill with a clean drytowel.• Do not use abrasive cleansing powdersor scouring pads which will scratch thecooktop.• Do not use chlorine bleach, ammonia orother cleansers not specificallyrecommended for use on glass-ceramic.All Cartridges:• Before first use clean cooktop cartridge.(See detailed instructions, pg. 6.)• For best results, always userecommended cookware.• Different cooktops and differentamounts of food being prepared willinfluence the control settings neededfor best results. (See cooktop or rangeuse and care manual for typical controlsettings.) For fastest cooking, start withthe surface control on Hi for one minute;then turn the control to the desiredsetting. Covering pans, wheneverpossible, speeds cooking and is moreenergy efficient.Radiant and Halogen Cartridges:• The glass-ceramic cooking area retainsheat for a period of time after theelements have been turned off. Put thisretained heat to good use. Turnelements off a few minutes before foodis completely cooked and use theretained heat to complete the cooking.Because of this heat retentioncharacteristic, the elements will notrespond to changes in heat settings asquickly as coil elements. In the eventof a potential boilover, remove the panfrom the cooking area.• When preparing foods which can beeasily scorched or over-cooked, startcooking at a lower temperature settingand gradually increase temperature asneeded.• A higher setting than normal may benecessary when using cookware madewith material that is slow to conductheat, such as cast iron.• A lower setting can be used whencooking small quantities of foods orwhen using a pan that conducts heatquickly. COOKING PROCEDURES GLASS-CERAMIC COOKTOP SEALED GAS CARTRIDGE Sealed Burner Cartridge –Model JGA8100ADB (black)Model JGA8100ADW (white)The sealed burners of your cartridge aresecured to the cartridge and are notdesigned to be removed. Since theburners are sealed into the cartridge, boilovers or spills will not seep underneaththe cooktop. However, the burner headsshould be cleaned after each use. (Seepage 7 for cleaning directions.)TO PREVENT THE COOKTOPFROM DISCOLORING ORSTAINING: Clean cooktop after each use. Wipe acidic or sugary spills as soonas the cooktop has cooled as thesespills may discolor the porcelain. BURNER GRATES The grates must be properly positionedbefore cooking. Improper installation ofthe grates may result in chipping of thecooktop.Do not operate the burners without apan on the grate. The grate’sporcelain finish may chip without apan to absorb the heat from the burnerflame.8111P499-60 6/8/06, 8:36 AM55 NOTES:

A properly adjusted burner withclean ports will light within a fewseconds. If using natural gas, theflame will be blue with a deeper blueinner cone.If the burner flame is yellow or isnoisy, the air/gas mixture may beincorrect. Contact a servicetechnician to adjust. (Adjustmentsare not covered by the warranty.)With LP gas, some yellow tips on theflames are acceptable. This isnormal and adjustment is notnecessary. With some types of gas, you mayhear a “popping” sound when thesurface burner is turned off. This isa normal operating sound of theburner. If the control knob is turned veryquickly from hi to lo, the flame maygo out, particularly if the burner iscold. If this occurs, turn the knob tothe OFF position, wait severalseconds and relight the burner. To improve cooking efficiency andto prevent possible damage to thecooktop or pan, the flame must beadjusted so it does not extendbeyond the edge of the pan.
