How to start the Volvo MD2020 engine?

Before starting, open the seacock and fuel valve, check oil and coolant levels. Put the control lever in neutral. Turn the key to position II (preheating) for 10 to 30 seconds, then to position III to start. Release as soon as the engine runs.

What engine oil to use and when to change it?

Use API CD quality oil, viscosity SAE 15W/40 or 20W/50. Oil change with filter replacement should be done every 100 service hours, or at least once a year. For a new engine, first oil change at 20-50 hours.

How to check and top up coolant?

Check the level when the engine is cold. The level should be just below the filler neck or between the MIN and MAX marks on the expansion tank. Use a 50% Volvo Penta antifreeze and 50% clean water mixture for protection down to -40°C. Never open the cap on a hot engine.

What to do in case of an audible alarm?

The audible alarm sounds for high temperature, low oil pressure, or charging failure. Press the confirmation button to stop the audible alarm; the light flashes until repair. In case of high temperature, reduce speed; if oil pressure is low, stop the engine immediately.

How to drain the drive oil (120S-D)?

Remove the dipstick, then remove the drain plug on the propeller housing to let the oil drain. Check the O-ring condition. Screw the plug back and fill with API CD SAE 15W/40 oil up to the MAX mark on the dipstick.

When to change the seawater pump impeller?

The impeller should be inspected and replaced if cracked or worn, at least once a year or every 200 hours. For winter storage, remove it and store in a cool place. Always carry a spare impeller onboard.

How to bleed the fuel system?

Open the bleed screw on the fuel filter three turns. Operate the priming pump until fuel flows without bubbles. Tighten the screw. Then loosen the injector nuts and crank the engine with the starter until fuel comes out, then retighten.

Which battery to use and how to maintain it?

Use a 70 Ah, 12 V battery. Check electrolyte level (5-10 mm above plates) and top up with distilled water if necessary. Clean terminals and grease them. In winter, ensure it is fully charged to prevent freezing.

How to winterize the engine?

With the boat in water, drain engine and transmission oil, change filters. Haul the boat, clean the drive, drain drive oil. Flush seawater circuit, remove impeller. Check antifreeze in freshwater circuit. Disconnect batteries and charge them. Remove and store propellers.

What is the recommended cruising speed?

For good economy, maintain engine speed 300 to 500 rpm below maximum speed. The full load speed range is 3200 to 3600 rpm for the MD2020. Avoid continuous operation at full throttle.
