What is the startup procedure for the MD2040 engine?
Before starting, open the seacock and fuel valve. Check oil and coolant levels. Turn main switch on. For a dashboard with ignition, turn key to position I (check warning lights), then to position II (preheat 10 seconds max 30), then to position III to start. Release key once engine runs. Let it warm up at low speed.
What is the recommended cruising speed?
For good economy and optimal comfort, avoid full throttle. The recommended cruising speed is 300 to 500 rpm below the maximum full-load speed, i.e., about 2700-3300 rpm for the MD2040.
How to change the engine oil?
Warm up the engine to thin the oil. Stop engine. Extract oil through oil drain hose using a pump. Replace oil filter by unscrewing old one, clean surface, oil new gasket, screw by hand until contact then half turn more. Fill with new oil to MAX mark on dipstick. Start and check for leaks.
What is the coolant change frequency?
If using antifreeze mixture (glycol), change every two years. If using non-glycol anticorrosion mixture, change every year. Level should be just below filler neck or between MAX and MIN marks on expansion tank.
How to bleed the fuel system?
Open the bleed screw on the fuel filter about 3 turns. Operate the priming pump until fuel flows without bubbles. Tighten bleed screw. Loosen injector nuts, set throttle to max, and crank with starter until fuel comes out. Tighten nuts. Start engine and check for leaks.
What are the symptoms of a worn seawater pump impeller?
A worn or cracked impeller can cause engine overheating because seawater flow is reduced. Check impeller at every coolant change (every 1 or 2 years). If damaged, replace. Always carry a spare impeller on board.
How to maintain the battery?
Keep battery clean and dry. Clean terminals with a brass brush and grease with Vaseline. Check electrolyte level (5-10 mm above plates) and top up with distilled water if necessary. Fully recharge battery if boat is unused for long. In winter, a discharged battery can freeze.
How to winterize the engine?
After dry storage, drain engine oil and outdrive oil. Replace oil filter and fuel filter. Clean and preserve seawater system with antifreeze mixture. Remove seawater pump impeller and store in cool place. Check antifreeze in freshwater circuit. Disconnect and charge battery. Grease propeller shaft.
What do the audible alarm and warning lights indicate?
The audible alarm triggers when coolant temperature is too high, oil pressure insufficient, or alternator charge fault. Corresponding lights flash. In case of temperature alarm, reduce to idle; if persists, stop engine. In case of oil pressure, stop immediately.
Which propeller to use with the MD2040?
The propeller choice depends on hull type, load, and operating conditions. The engine must reach max speed range (3200-3600 rpm) at full load. Consult your Volvo Penta dealer for suitable propeller. The folding propeller requires replacement of the stopper and lock screw every 4 years.
