Frequently Asked Questions - MD2010 VOLVO

How to start the MD2010 engine?
Before starting, open the seacock and fuel valve, check oil and coolant levels, and turn the main switch on. For a panel with start contact, turn the key to position II to preheat for 10 seconds, then to position III to start. Release the key as soon as the engine runs.
What engine oil to use and how to check the level?
Use API CD quality oil, viscosity SAE 15W/40 or 20W/50. Check the level daily before the first start using the dipstick. The level must be in the crosshatched area. Do not exceed the MAX mark.
What to do in case of audible alarm?
If the audible alarm activates, identify the corresponding warning light: high temperature (reduce to idle, stop if necessary), low oil pressure (stop immediately), alternator not charging. Press the reset button to silence the alarm, but the light will flash until repaired.
How often to change oil and replace oil filter?
Oil change and oil filter replacement must be carried out every 100 service hours or at least once a year. For a new or rebuilt engine, do the first change after 20 to 50 hours.
How to bleed the fuel system?
After changing the fuel filter or if the tank has been emptied, open the bleed screw on the filter a few turns, operate the priming pump until fuel without bubbles appears, then tighten the screw. Then loosen the injector nuts, crank the engine with the starter until fuel comes out, then tighten.
What is the winter storage procedure?
With the boat in water, drain the engine oil and replace oil and fuel filters. Remove the boat from the water, clean the drive, drain the drive oil, flush the seawater system and remove the impeller from the seawater pump. Check the antifreeze protection of the coolant. Disconnect and charge the batteries.
How to maintain the cooling system?
Check the coolant level daily. Use a 50/50 mix of Volvo Penta antifreeze and clean water year-round. Drain the coolant every two years (antifreeze mix) or every year (anticorrosion). Clean the heat exchanger when draining. Never open the filler cap when the engine is hot.
How to replace the folding propeller?
Set the control to forward, remove the blades by unscrewing the locking screws and driving out the pins. Remove the lock, locking screw, nut and propeller hub. Clean and lubricate the shaft and hub with waterproof grease. Fold the lock tabs against the screw head. Tighten the nut to 70 Nm and the locking screws to 20 Nm.
What are the basic engine adjustments?
The idle speed must be 850 ± 25 rpm. The valve clearance (cold engine) must be 0.20 mm for intake and exhaust. The drive belt should deflect about 10 mm under thumb pressure between the pulleys.
How to use the safety switch (emergency stop)?
Volvo Penta recommends fitting an optional safety switch, especially for fast boats. It stops the engine if the skipper falls overboard. Follow the installation instructions supplied with the switch.
