DaS MaGNaT CINEMa ULTRa
Dear MAGNAT Customer,
Congratulations on your fine new loudspeakers and thank you very much for choosing MAGNAT! You have made an excellent choice. The high-quality speakers produced by MAGNAT are renowned all over the world.
Please study the instructions and information below carefully before using your new loudspeakers.
MaGNaT CINEMa ULTRa
The LCR 100-THX front speaker and the RD 200-THX dipole surround sound speaker are both parts of the Magnat Cinema Ultra loudspeaker family. Other models include the SUB 300-THX subwoofer and the Dolby Atmos-compatible AEH 400-ATM universal add-on speaker.
A 5.1 system comprising three LCR 100-THX front speakers, two RD 200-THX dipole surround sound speakers and one SUB 300-THX subwoofer meets the requirements of the THX Ultra2 standard. The system can be expanded without any difficulty (e.g. a second subwoofer for 5.2 or further surround sound speakers for 7.2). In addition, all the models can also be used outside the Cinema Ultra range and with non-THX-licensed devices as extremely powerful home cinema components.
GENERaL INFORMaTION
Please always use a good quality loudspeaker connection cable from an audio dealer. To prevent impairment of sound quality, we recommend cables with cross-sections of at least 2.5 mm ^2 for lengths up to 3 m and at least 4 mm ^2 for lengths above 3 m.
Always turn off the amplifier or receiver before connecting or disconnecting loudspeaker cables. Place the loudspeakers in their planned positions and cut the cables to the right length. The cables for both channels should always be exactly the same length.
Strip 10 – 15 mm of insulation from the ends of the cables. Twist the ends – this is much better than tinning them with solder – insert them in the terminals and tighten the terminal screws firmly (fig. 1). Loudspeaker cables with CE-compliant banana or single-pin plugs (4 mm) or forked fittings can also be used.
For good sound it is imperative that the cables must be connected in such a way that the speakers are “in phase”. This means that the black negative terminals on the speakers (-) must be connected to the negative (-) terminals on the amplifier, the red positive (+) speaker terminals to the positive (+) amplifier terminals. To make this easier one wire of most speaker cables is marked with a coloured strip or a ridge in the insulation.
Before switching on the system double-check all your connections and make sure that the terminal screws are tight and that there are no short circuits caused by stray wire filaments – this could cause serious damage to your amplifier!
GENERaL REMaRKS CONCERNING SETUP
The LCR 100-THX front speaker complies with the THX Ultra2 standard for vertical and horizontal operation in all positions. This results in a variety of setup possibilities (Fig. 2 a-d). In mixed operation mode combining vertical and horizontal positioning, it is advisable, for acoustic reasons, to have identical alignment of the left and right speakers.
The loudspeakers offer several options for wall mounting. Wall-mounting brackets are fitted at the rear, with both vertical and horizontal alignment possible in the case of the front speaker. Alternatively, the speakers can be mounted using a VESA standard wall bracket. Distance between the holes:
- 200x200mm M6 for the LCR 100-THX front speaker
- 200x100mm M4 for the RD 200-THX dipole surround sound speaker
Four self-adhesive rubber feet are included for the front speaker for setting up on a loudspeaker stand or shelf.
POSITIONING THE SPEaKERS
The middle of the image and the central listening position are the reference points for setting up all the speakers (Fig. 3).
The tweeters of all the front speakers should be placed at the ear level of the listening position (approx. 90 - 100 cm). If the speaker is positioned higher or lower, it should be set at an angle, where possible, so that the tweeter is aimed at ear height. There should be a clear line of sight between the speakers and the listening position. Sound-absorbing or reflecting obstacles distort the sound.
The centre speaker should be positioned directly below or above the TV or screen. The left and rights speakers should span an angle of around 45^ seen from the listening position, i.e. approx. 22.5^ on each side. If this is not possible, the speakers should be positioned close to these locations.
The RD 200-THX dipole surround sound speakers are hung at least 60 cm above ear level (centre of the speaker) immediately to the left and right of the listening position (Fig. 3). For a correct soundscape, make sure the left and right surround sound speakers are not reversed (marked on the type label).
aUTOMaTIC CaLIBRaTION
A lot of modern AV amplifiers and receivers provide the option of automatic system calibration via microphone. Calibration is advisable as the levels and distances of all the loudspeakers are determined automatically and, depending on the calibration system, the frequency responses of the connected speakers are also corrected in order to compensate for poor room acoustics. Please read the user guide for your AV amplifier or receiver in this regard.
To expand the system for larger rooms and optimum sound distribution, it is advisable to use a second subwoofer and two additional speakers as surround back ("SB") behind the listening position. There are several possible configurations for the surround back speakers.
THX recommends two direct sound transducers (e.g. LCR 100-THX) positioned only a few cm apart at ear level behind the listening position (“THX Advanced Speaker Array”, Fig. 4a). Together with the THX-certified electronics, they produce harmonious sound fields for all applications (film, music, games).
When connecting to non-THX-certified electronics, two direct sound transducers (e.g. LCR 100-THX) or two further dipoles (e.g. RD 200-THX) are recommended as surround back speakers. In both cases, these should be secured on the back wall behind the listening positions at least 120 cm apart. Direct sound transducers should be positioned at the height of the front speakers, and the dipoles at the height of the existing side dipoles.
The choice of the optimum speakers depends on the application. In the case of a short distance between the listening position and the rear wall (less than 120cm), dipole speakers are ideal, with direct sound transducers preferred for greater distances (at least 120cm). In addition, direct sound transducers are ideal for multi-channel music reproduction. Dipoles are recommended for a markedly diffuse soundscape in the rear area and the reproduction of movie sound.
If the source material and electronics offer options of further channels (e.g. presence speaker, Dolby Atmos etc.), the system can be expanded additionally with the compact AEH 400-ATM universal add-on speaker. The AEH 400-ATM offers two switch-selectable modes: an Atmos mode in the form of a Dolby Atmos-compatible add-on speaker (fits on top of the LCR 100-THX front speaker) and a direct sound transducer mode for use as an add-on speaker for wall and ceiling mounting.

HOW TO aVOID DaMaGE TO YOUR ValUaBLE SPEaKERS
All MAGNAT loudspeakers are designed and built for optimum sound reproduction with the tone controls in the central position – i.e. with “linear” amplifier output. Turning up the bass and treble controls too far delivers more power to the woofers and/or tweeters, and at high volumes this can actually destroy the speaker units! If the output of your amplifier is significantly higher than the rated power handling capacity of your speakers extremely high volumes can physically destroy your speakers. This doesn’t actually happen often but you should be aware that it is possible.
Weak amplifiers with low output ratings can actually be more dangerous for your speakers at medium volumes because weak amplifiers may overload much faster than powerful ones and this causes measurable and audible distortion, which is extremely dangerous to your loudspeakers.
Always turn the volume down immediately as soon as you hear distortion! If you like listening to loud music make sure that your amplifier can deliver at least as much power as the speakers' power-handling rating.
THE SOUND YOU CaN'T HEaR...
Amplifiers, tuners and CD players can all produce inaudible high-frequency signals – and this doesn't only apply to cheap products. If your tweeters fail at low or medium volumes you should have a qualified technician check your system components for dangerous inaudible signals.
